After wrapping its inaugural edition, the Ho Chi Minh Film Festival (Hiff) has set its sights on becoming the largest film festival in Southeast Asia.
Showcasing more than 100 films over eight days, the festival received over 280,000 visitors, including international guests, over eight days earlier this month (April 6-13).
Industry professionals present at the festival told Deadline that they were impressed by the scale and ambition of the festival, which included a script lab, workshop and project market and a “content and tech expo” focusing on new media and emerging technologies.
“It can be said to be a success, although there are still a few things we could have done better if we had more time to prepare,” Hiff Executive Director Pham Minh Toan told Deadline. “We are happy because most of the international friends who attended responded positively — what happened in Ho Chi Minh City over the eight days exceeded...

Barry Keoghan is showing off his script tattoos for Andrea Arnold’s highly-anticipated “Bird.”
The “Saltburn” actor and “Banshees of Inisherin” Oscar nominee plays a character named Bug in the feature that has very little details shared as of yet. “Passages” star Franz Rogowski is cast as Bird, with Nykiya Adams, Jason Buda, Jasmine Jobson, Joanne Matthews, James Nelson-Joyce, Rhys Yates, and Sarah Beth Harber.
While plot details remain under wraps, it is known that Keoghan exited Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2” to film “Bird” instead. The feature will be premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in competition alongside Sean Baker’s “Anora,” David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds,” Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness,” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.”
“Bird” is director Arnold’s return to narrative filmmaking since her 2016 Cannes release “American Honey” starring Shia Labeouf and Sasha Lane.

When mother-daughter showrunners Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke began working on “The Way Home” with creator Marly Reed, they didn’t intentionally set their sites on the world of “Alice in Wonderland.” Instead, it came completely natural.
“As we started looking at this show and the concept, it became so much clearer to us how oddly echoing it all was to the book, and we sort of thought well, if it’s there, let’s use it. It’s a story about a girl that literally falls down the rabbit hole into a whole other world and is trying to make sense of what she’s seeing and of her adventures there,” Alexandra tells Variety. With seamless comparisons, they began bringing physical similarities and themes from the 1865 novel into Season 1.

It is easy to feel protective of Shirley Henderson on this gloomy winter afternoon. Is she warm enough? Does she want to put the heating on? “Aye, I’m Ok,” she says from her home in Fife, a few strands of chestnut hair falling over her glasses as she huddles close to the laptop. “It’s a wee bit blowy out. Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” isn’t new to the “turn something innocent into a horror movie” fad. Brave gamers might remember diving into the twisted mind of American McGee’s Alice, or indie film diehards could have caught 2010’s Alice in Murderland. Writer and director Richard John Taylor explores forbidden but charted territory with his fresh psychological thriller Alice in Terrorland, which can’t help but earn comparisons to other horror forward Wonderland adaptations. Luckily for Taylor’s cerebrally nasty and visually slick reimagining, the average lookalike doesn’t set a high bar to clear — hardly spectacular, but damn sure better than something like Alice in Murderland.
Lizzy Willis stars as little orphan Alice (named after Carroll’s book), the only survivor of a house fire that claimed her parents’ lives. Alice relocates to her grandmother’s sprawling yet dilapidated estate, where Ruth (Rula Lenska) assumes caretaking duties.

In the 1995 movie "Waterworld," Kevin Costner was the draw in more ways than one. To much of the audience, he was still the glamorous movie star who had managed to pull off a blockbuster "Robin Hood" movie despite his inability to successfully nail an English accent. To others, he seemed like he might be a potential trainwreck on the verge of derailment. "Waterworld" had fallen victim to many behind-the-scenes tales of sinking sets, director fights, and Costner rewriting the script to make himself look better. Ultimately, for one reason or another, enough people were curious about the film that it turned a profit. However difficult he may have been behind the scenes, the star turned out to still have it.
Within the movie, however, the person everyone wants to see is Enola, a nine year-old girl whose back tattoo features an encoded map to the last bit of dry land on a post-climate change world.

The 35th Annual Palm Spring International Film Festival, which took place from Jan. 4 to 15, has announced this year’s jury award winners. “Four Daughters” took home the Fipresci prize, which recognizes films in the international film festival Oscar submissions program. The Kaouther Ben Hania-directed film is Tunisia’s official Oscar submission.
“While digging through the details of the tragic disintegration of a Tunisian family, director Kaouther Ben Hania reclaims the cliché of reenactment and reinvents it, emerging with a powerful account of human complexity. This striking blend of fact, meta-fiction and confessional therapy makes a convincing case for the continued vitality of cinema as an art form,” the jury statement reads.
Best documentary went to “The Echo,” while “The Animal Kingdom” received the New Voices New Visions award, which recognizes unique perspectives from first and second time directors.

Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn is arguably 2023’s most polarizing film, and for good reason. My initial thought after finishing this film was, “This is The Talented Mr. Ripley on steroids.” Although it runs for 2 hours and 10 minutes and hammers the details into your head, Saltburn actually leaves much to desire at the end of the film. This is a chaotic film that, in parts, will leave you squirming and averting your eyes, screaming, “No, make it stop.” As uncomfortable as it is, though, there’s a strange, alluring nature that keeps you going despite the predictable nature of the film. The past few years, we’ve been bombarded by the “eat the rich” genre, possibly a direct result of the pandemic. Saltburn seems to fit into that category, yet it subverts it because of how superficial it all seems. The film follows Oliver Quick, a young man at Oxford University...

One of the most popular events at the 34th Singapore International Film Festival (Sgiff) was a panorama event where six of the country’s leading indie film lights shared a panel to discuss opportunities and challenges.
Opportunities are plentiful, with the festival world embracing Singaporean films and filmmakers warmly. Hong Kong-based Anthony Chen has had a stellar year with his directorial efforts “Drift” and “The Breaking Ice” which premiered at Sundance and Cannes, respectively. The latter was selected as Singapore’s entry to the 2024 Oscars.
Among Chen’s fellow panelists, Jow Zhi Wei’s “Tomorrow is a Long Time” premiered at the Berlinale this year; Nicole Midori Woodford’s “Last Shadow at First Light” at San Sebastian; and Nelson Yeo’s “Dreaming & Dying” won two major awards at Locarno.

“Tiger Stripes”, the opening film of this year’s Singapore International Film Festival (Sgiff), was “kind of a joke that became something very, very close to me and ended up being this film,” Malaysian filmmaker, Amanda Nell Eu, said during Thursday night’s opening ceremony.
Speaking to a packed theatre before the screening, Eu said her inspiration had been puberty mixed with her sense of humor.
“I love playing with horror. I love playing with comedy and I was like, I want to make a film about a girl who literally turns into a monster because I felt like a monster as a kid,” she said. “ ‘Tiger Stripes’ is really a story that fights for the people who feel like they don’t fit in society.”
Opening the festival, Singapore filmmaker and Sgiff chairperson, Boo Junfeng, talked about the event’s “sense of community” and a “collective sense of purpose.

Combining comedy with melodrama in a film about middle-age fatherhood is not exactly an easy feat to undertake, but it is exactly what Chai Yee Wei chose to do for his first feature after ten years and ”That Girl in Pinafore”.
Wonderland is screening at Singapore International Film Festival
Set in 1980's Singapore, the movie revolves around Loke, a single father who is trying to ensure the best future possible for his only daughter Eileen, through his incense-selling shop. When Eileen gets a scholarship to study in the US, Loke lies to her that he has enough savings to sustain her life there, and eventually proceeds into selling his house to help her financially. At the same time, though, she also lies to him about her life there, and the fact that she has to work part-time in order to survive. Loke eventually meets Tan after moving to a cramped apartment next to him,...

What does it mean to be a Disney Princess? This could be a question regarding corporate decisions, as the Walt Disney Company has a specific classification for their "Princess Line" media franchise and toy line, but it's also a bit existential. As it turns out — there are rules to be considered an official Princess, with Disney currently recognizing 13 characters with the distinction. We have some bad news for fans of Chapelwaite.
The horror drama will not be returning for a second season.
Co-creator and Executive Producer Jason Filardi took to X to share the sad news.
"I'm afraid Captain Boone's story ends on that beach of weathered, Maine sand," Filardi posted.
"There will be no Season 2. Thank you to all the Chapelwaite fans!"
Chapelwaite launched in August 2021, with the development of a second season being announced shortly after.
But with a lack of updates, fans were left pondering what would become of the series.
Unfortunately, it's likely that no episodes were produced for the planned second season, and Epix becoming MGM+ likely changed the streamer's priorities away from making the new season.
Set in the 1850s, the Chapelwaite follows Captain Charles Boone (Adrien Brody), who relocates his family of three children to his ancestral home in the small, seemingly sleepy town of Preacher's Corners,...

Taylor Swift is taking us back to 1989. Today brings the release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version), a newly re-recorded version of her beloved 2014 album. Stream it below, and read our analysis of the album here.
Widely considered to be Swift’s first pure pop album, one could easily point to 1989 as the album that made Taylor the omnipresent, record-breaking star she is today. It features the hits “Shake It Off,” “Bad Blood,” “Blank Space,” and “Style,” as well as fan-favorites “Out of the Woods” and “New Romantics.”
In addition to updated recordings of those classics, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) features the Vault tracks “Slut!”, “Say Don’t Go,” “Now That We Don’t Talk,” “Suburban Legends,” and “Is It Over Now?,” as well as a sixth previously unreleased song called “Sweeter Than Fiction” that’s only available through Target. The record is also available on cassette, light blue vinyl, and multiple colored CDs.

Thunder – the feature debut of a Swiss writer and director Carmen Jaquier, who previously directed shorts and was a part of an omnibus film Wonderland in 2015 - premiered last year at Toronto International Film Festival and has recently become the official Switzerland’s bid to the 2023 Oscars. Despite the fact that the action here takes place at the edge of the 19th and 20th centuries, Jaquier’s film is incredibly relevant (not to mention – a stunning piece of cinematography), offering a powerful meditation on the paths of self-discovery in a hostile world. In the summer of 1900, a young novitiate Elisabeth on the verge of taking her vows, is delivered the news of her sister Innocente’s sudden death....
