Exclusive: A two-part Netflix documentary from Louis Theroux’s production biz will tell the story of the victims of a prolific UK cyberstalker and how they ultimately helped bring him to justice.
Dropping on Netflix globally on February 21, Can I Tell You A Secret? will tell the harrowing real-life story of the victims of serial cyberstalker Matthew Hardy. Told using testimony from the women, it will detail the terrifying and sustained online harassment they endured and how his crimes tore lives apart.
In January 2022, Hardy was jailed for nine years, the longest sentence ever doled out in the UK for online stalking. The court heard how he would create fake social media accounts before contacting people with the beguiling message, ‘Can I tell you a secret?’ He went on to send messages to victims and their friends and family that sowed discord and created heartache, frequently with horrible consequences.

Practically everyone in Scottish cinema has, at some point or another, discussed the idea of making a Loch Ness Monster movie. She’s our monster – why don’t we take better advantage of that? To date, however, homegrown efforts have tended to be aimed at children, reflecting the affection which most Scots feel towards the probably imaginary but nonetheless cherished beast. This film – though it seems to be mostly English-led and hinges on interest from London which seems unlikely at best – at least gets at little closer to the fearsome potential of the thing.
If anything were to make British authorities truly enthusiastic about devolution, one imagines that it would be a giant monster on the loose in Scottish waters – clearly a fisheries or environmental health issue and therefore not their problem. There’s a lot of crossover between public and corporate concerns, however, and with some of those sent.

Award-winning feature documentary “Mom & Dad’s Nipple Factory” has inked a deal with Sonder Entertainment for a national theatrical tour beginning in October to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Mom & Dad’s Nipple Factory,” a Jubilee Production, will screen in theaters nationwide and into next year ahead of its digital release in February.
Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Justin Johnson, the feature documentary tells the story of Johnson’s parents’ resilience in the face of a breast cancer diagnosis and unilateral mastectomy — which unexpectedly leads them to launch a novel homespun prosthetic nipple business. They hide this endeavor from their five children, church and small community.
“Mom and Dad’s journey, filled with love, humor, and ingenuity amidst adversity, has blossomed into a project that has already touched thousands of hearts in our festival run. I’m excited to partner with Sonder Entertainment to share this poignant yet humorous film with audiences nationwide,...

Winner of Best Screenplay at Cannes Film Festival this year, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s new drama Monster has now been set for a release later this year. Coming from Well Go USA, they’ve set a November 22 theatrical released in NYC, then Dec. 1 in LA, followed by an expansion. Written by Sakamoto Yuji, starring Ando Sakura, Nagayama Eita, Kurokawa Soya, Hiiragi Hinata, and Tanaka Yuko, and featuring one of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s final scores, the first trailer has now arrived for the film which tells a story of traumatic adolescence from a trio of perspectives.
Luke Hicks said in his review, “Few stories are as gratifying as the narrative jigsaw. How to fool the viewer into believing one thing without lying about what happened? The use of folklore and native legends as a source for content in the horror genre stretches back decades, whether it be for minuscule scenes within the larger narrative or wholesale films based on such stories. Ranging from the likes of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and other cryptids to simpler stuff like “When a Stranger Calls” or “Urban Legends,” it’s all fairly commonly used as a building block that serves up some intriguing content. Directors Chalit Krileadmongkon and Pakphun Wongjinda, hot on the heels of their successful creature feature “Leio: The Terrible Giant” (or the rebranded US title “The Beast Beneath”), team up again with inspiration from a Thai legend of a human-possessing centipede to deliver another stellar creature feature in “Creepy Crawly” on Digital and Blu-Ray from WellGo USA on October 3.

Who is the real monster when the truth comes out?
Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Monster” marks the director’s return to films set in Japan for the first time since winning the Palme d’Or for 2018 film “Shoplifters.” Kore-eda went on to helm “The Truth” and “Broker,” set in France and South Korea, respectively. “Monster” is also the first film Kore-eda has directed from another script since 1995’s “Maboroshi.” The “Monster” screenplay, written by Yuji Sakamoto, went on to win the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes 2023.
The official synopsis reads: When her young son Minato (Soya Kurokawa) starts to behave strangely, his mother (Sakura Ando) feels that there is something wrong. Discovering that a teacher (Eita Nagayama) is responsible, she storms into the school demanding to know what’s going on. But as the story unfolds though the eyes of the mother, teacher, and child, the truth gradually emerges.

Heralded Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda did not win the top Palme d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival this year—that was in 2018 for “Shoplifters.” But for one, Kore-edais a Palme d’Or winner, not something most filmmakers in the world can say; for two, any time he delivers a film at Cannes, it’s in competition, and this year, with his follow-up “Monster,” the film was honored with the Queer Palm as well as the Best Screenplay award; nothing to sneeze at.

Even if you're only passingly familiar with manga and anime, I'd bet that you've heard of "Fullmetal Alchemist," a modern classic of both mediums. First authored by Hiromu Arakawa and adapted to animation twice, all versions follow the titular alchemist, Edward Elric, and his little brother Alphonse. Mutilated when they tried to revive their dead mother, they're now on a quest to get their bodies back by finding the Philosopher's Stone. Along the way, they face obstacles ranging from a military dictatorship to ouroboros-tattooed homunculi.
"Fullmetal Alchemist" is not my all-time favorite manga or anime, but it is my favorite Shōnen series. What is that? A Japanese term referring to boys' media. Think "Dragon Ball," "Naruto," or "One Piece." They all fit under this umbrella.
Many of these series are published by the same magazine, Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump, but not "Fullmetal Alchemist." If you've ever wondered why the...

It’s no exaggeration to say that Korea’s Busan International Film Festival (Biff) has been through a fair amount of drama this year.
The turmoil started in May when Biff chairman Lee Yong-kwan appointed a close associate, Cho Jongkook, as managing director alongside artistic director Huh Moonyung, a decision that proved highly unpopular with some sectors of the local Korean film industry.
Huh resigned, and in an apparently unrelated development, was accused of sexual harassment by a festival employee around the same time. Lee also resigned, Cho was dismissed by the Biff board, and Oh Seok-geun, director of Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm), who had supported Lee’s decision to hire Cho, also stepped down. By early July, four of the festival’s top management were out of the door.

Just two years after winning a Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor Emmy for “Mare of Easttown,” Evan Peters currently has a strong shot at conquering the corresponding lead category as the star of “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” By succeeding on this outing, he would not only maintain his perfect acting Emmys record, but would also follow Ed Flanders as the second recipient of both possible limited program performance prizes.
Given the overall strength of this year’s Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor lineup, Peters’s potential win won’t come easily, if at all. The only other previous Emmy nominee in the mix is Kumail Nanjiani (“Welcome to Chippendales”), with most of the slots being filled by well-known first-timers Taron Egerton (“Black Bird”), Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”), Michael Shannon (“George & Tammy”), and Steven Yeun (“Beef”).

This year, for the first time ever, multiple limited series have each received two simultaneous directing Emmy nominations. These history-making programs – “Beef” and “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” – are both Netflix productions that have amassed 13 TV academy notices apiece, with this being one of eight categories in which they are directly facing off. While it is true that only one of this category’s previous multi-nominated series actually won, the fact that these two new shows take up a majority of their lineup’s slots might very well yield an unusual result.
Either Netflix series would bring the streaming platform its third limited program directing win, following the success of “Unorthodox” in 2020 and “The Queen’s Gambit” in 2021. Also in the running are the category’s first Hulu original movie, “Prey,” and the FX series “Fleishman is in Trouble,” which also hails from a network that has already prevailed here twice.

In spite of the fact that “American Crime Story” won the Best Limited Series Emmy twice, its third iteration (“Impeachment”) missed out on a nomination last year, and two other Ryan Murphy productions (“American Horror Story” and “Feud”) have failed in their attempts to conquer the category. Naturally, the vast majority of Gold Derby’s thousands of Emmy predictors expect Murphy’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” to falter in this year’s race and are instead backing “Beef,” which, like its strongest challenger, would follow “The Queen’s Gambit” (2021) as the second Netflix series to achieve this top honor.
Also included in the current Best Limited Series lineup are “Daisy Jones & the Six” (Prime Video) and “Fleishman is in Trouble” (FX), both of which were adapted from 2019 novels of the same titles. Osamu Tezuka is often mentioned along with the title of “Father of Manga” and in many ways, he is, thanks to the prolific nature of his works and the fact that he managed to walk the perfect line between entertainment for kids and profound storytelling that took the medium of manga to an entirely new era. Characters like Astro Boy, Kimba, the White Lion, and Black Jack are still present in the audience’s minds even after so long, and thus the influence of Tezuka cannot be understated. Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit limited, where the supporting categories will have seven slots again.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Stepping into the new feature, Surrounded, I had very little idea as to what I was about to experience. Directed by Anthony Mandler, the film features the impressive talents of both Letitia Wright and Jamie Bell. The western tells the story of a former Buffalo Soldier who finds herself tasked with watching over a notorious outlaw. It’s an excellent character study that also happens to feature a number of thrilling sequences, including an incredible stagecoach robbery. I was floored by Surrounded.
Recently, we had the extreme pleasure to chat with the film’s stars as well as Mr. Mandler himself. For Letitia Wright, who has been proving to be an amazing talent, she opened up about taking on this role and to what it entailed. Cannes is the birthplace for any number of future Best International Feature Film Oscar nominees, like last year’s Grand Prize winner “Close,” or winners like 2021 Competition entry “Drive My Car.” This year’s possibilities include the UK’s rapturously received German-language from UK filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, “The Zone of Interest;” Argentina’s Un Certain Regard entry “The Delinquents,” a three-hour existential heist movie picked up by Mubi; or Japan’s “Monster,” the latest film from Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose “Shoplifters” scored both the Palme d’Or and an Oscar nomination. However, before they can be nominated they must be submitted — and that, as Academy members well know, is the rub.
The demand for reform boils down to this: Too often the decision of Oscar submissions belongs to decision-makers instead of filmmakers, and that can lead to some… frustrating choices. Last year India did not submit “Rrr” and Italy declined to...

The Masked Singer is back, with fans tuning in every Saturday night to try to guess which celebrity is behind each costume.
Comedian Joel Dommett has returned to host proceedings, with 13 mystery stars singing familiar songs on stage, while dressed up in an outfit obscuring their identity.
Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.
One way to help narrow things down is checking out who’s been on the series before – as it seems unlikely they’d return to the show (although not impossible).
So here’s a full list of who appeared on seasons one, two, three and four…
Season one
Winner: Nicola Roberts – Queen Bee
Jason Manford – Hedgehog
Katherine Jenkins – Octopus
CeeLo Green – Monster
Denise van Outen – Fox
Jake Shears – Unicorn
Skin – Duck
Kelis – Daisy
Teddy Sheringham – Tree
Justin Hawkins – Chameleon

Legendary Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto has signed on to write the music for Palme d’Or-winning director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s forthcoming feature film Monster (Kaibutsu), Tokyo-based production company Gaga Corporation revealed Thursday.
Sakamoto will provide newly written compositions as well as some of his pre-existing music for the film, producers say. A musical polymath, Sakamoto made his film debut with the iconic score for Nagisa Oshima’s Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), starring David Bowie. He later won an Oscar with his music for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor (1987) and a Golden Globe nomination for his compositions for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant (2015). The partnership with Kore-eda marks his first work on a high-profile Japanese title in some time.

Only a few days into January, and it’s already time to start thinking about the Emmys. While the Screen Actors Guild Awards may earn more immediate attention for how film nominees and winners affect the Oscar race, it’s also a key bellwether for fall and winter TV shows looking to start a lengthy awards run toward the Emmys. By the time voting rolls around in June 2023, series released over the latter half of 2022 will have to compete with voters’ fading memories and a slew of gold-digging new programs. The extra shine earned with a SAG nomination — one of, if not the winter’s most preeminent awards show — can ensure they’re included as viewers and experts alike cull the many competitors into a few dozen expected frontrunners.
That makes the SAG nominations significant for shows like HBO’s “House of the Dragon”; can it be “Game of Thrones...

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is one of Netflix‘s most-watched series to date (with more than 1 billion hours viewed in its first 60 days), and it has broken streaming records. It just snagged three Golden Globe nominations — two for stars Evan Peters and Niecy Nash-Betts, plus Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. It’s caught the attention of large audience of viewers. But not everyone who watched the series, also called the simplified Dahmer and Monster, think the Ryan Murphy drama should stick around. Still, it has been renewed for Season 2, with a focus on a different serial killer. There’s concerns over disrespecting the killer’s victims, which Murphy has addressed, plus controversy over the fact that it was tagged LGBTQ+ content on Netflix, which Murphy defends. And there’s a feeling of serial killer fatigue. With so many true-crime dramatizations, do we...

For the sixth year in a row, the Best TV Movie/Limited Series Golden Globe category includes no movies at all. Amazon Prime Video’s “The Underground Railroad” took the prize last year, but the streamer does not have a horse in the current race. This year, either “The Dropout” or “Pam and Tommy” can bring Hulu its first win of this kind, while “Black Bird” can do the same for Apple TV+. “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” could follow “The Queen’s Gambit” as the second Netflix show to triumph here, while “The White Lotus” could raise HBO’s Best TV Movie/Limited Series win total to 20. Which of these five programs do you think most deserves to prevail? Vote in our Best Limited Series Golden Globe poll below and then sound off in the comments and in our forums.

Following the massive success of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Netflix has ordered a Season 2 of Ryan Murphy‘s latest project for the streamer, The Watcher. But does the series really need another season? “Audiences can’t take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher. Alongside breakout Jennifer Coolidge, The Watcher boasts a star-studded cast, including Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Mia Farrow, Margo Martindale, Richard Kind, Terry Kinney,...

With the holidays in full swing, the movies want us to know that it’s not the happiest of times for some families, and for those who struggle to survive the entire rest of the year. And we’re not talking about Clark Grisswald or even George Bailey. And since it’s also awards season, the multiplex will have plenty of somber, serious cinema like this tale of truly “blue” people (aside from those on Pandora). Yes, addiction plays a major role alongside the actors in this drama. But this kind is rarely seen on screen, compared to booze, drugs, and even sex. This may stem from its being too complicated since the addicted can’t quit (pardon the phrase) “cold turkey”. And this leads to the nickname of this main character, who’s referred to (and sometimes called to his face) as The Whale.

It goes the same every year; the holidays are a time for joy and renewal, and the new year is a time to throw it all away, recover emotionally, and ignore real life until February (at least). We’re talking peak winter, existential angst — the kind of things you can’t face down without a warm blanket and a weekend TV marathon.

Megaproducer Ryan Murphy landed a Golden Globe nomination this week for his Netflix hit “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which is in the running for best TV limited series, anthology series or TV movie, among other nods. Long Japan’s cinema industry leader, Toho is poised to reassert itself in 2023 with a muscular new distribution slate, following an off-year.

Ryan Murphy’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is one of Netflix’s most-streamed series of all-time and was just nominated for four Golden Globes. But it’s also drawn a lot of outrage from members of the LGBTQ community and from members of the victim’s families, who were upset that they hadn’t been consulted about the series.
Murphy said he understands the backlash that led to Netflix removing the LGBTQ tag from the dark series about the cannibalistic serial killer, but that he doesn’t agree with it.
“Many people in the community want to uplift. I understand that,” he told Variety on Tuesday, adding that he doesn’t think that all LGBTQ stories should be “uplifting.”

Patty Jenkins has broken her silence on Wonder Woman 3.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news Dec. 7 that Jenkins iteration of Wonder Woman 3 was not moving forward after she submitted a treatment to Warners leadership.
A day later, The Wrap reported that Jenkins walked away from the project after a dispute over notes with the studio.
In a statement shared on her Twitter, Jenkins began by writing, “Sigh…I’m not one to take about private career matters, but I will not allow inaccuracies to continue. Here are the facts.”

Of course, these men didn't necessarily deserve their fate, but through her streak of killings, Wournos upended the classic serial killer structure where men usually turned unsuspecting women into their victims.
