The movie was initially offered to director Laurice Guillen with Hilda Koronel in the lead role. When the producers did not approve the initial script, the movie was shelved for years. When it was revised, Lino Brocka took over the project with Sharon Cuneta in the lead and Hilda Koronel as the antagonist.
Gilda Olvidado had previously worked with Viva Films to produce; she entirely wanted to go south with fantasy projects as well, but the concept for Babangon Akot Dudurugin Kita was too good to refuse since this was later Lino Brocka's finest project.
Lino Brocka's approach to the film was to use his regulars such as Hilda Koronel, Christopher De Leon, and Bembol Roco, who are some of the biggest screen veterans. Since Hilda Koronel had not worked for a long time due to a delicate pregnancy and doing one film project back in 1987, the film served as a comeback for one of cinema's most bankable actresses.
Sharon Cuneta had worked with Lino Brocka in "Pasan Ko Ang Daigdig." Although the film was somewhat of a box-office flop, the video-rentals did not stop Cuneta's success. In fact, this role in Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita since she plays a wife who exacts revenge on her belittlers which topped box office receipts.
