Mark Lawson kicks off our 2012 arts special by looking at how the Olympic Games will highlight the cracks in our culture
A theatre director recently told me that he would not be applying for the currently vacant job of artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, because he wasn't sure what any of the three words in the organisation's name mean any more: monarchy, Elizabethan authorship and permanent acting troupes are all concepts currently in flux. In the same way, anyone seeking to promote "British culture" – a key marketing concept in the year of the 2012 London Olympics – faces the problem that the definition of the United Kingdom is contracting while the definition of culture is expanding.
Many things that would seem to qualify for a notional British pavilion in an entertainment fair soon require to be subject to qualification. The X Factor is definitely British – but is it culture? My Week with Marilyn,...

One more Yes, No, Maybe So to take you into the holiday weekend. This one is the espionage thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy adapted from the bestseller of the same name by John LeCarre. The movie arrives in September. Let's break it down.
The trailer is quite riveting. I blame the intriguing imagery, the cold precision of the editing and those musical trills (not sure if that's the right word) in the score. (Though with scoring in trailers it's always a bad idea to get excited because chances are it's another score entirely in the film. Turns out this score is Danny Elfman from The Wolfman) The trailer is also smart about setting up the central dilemma 'there's a long term mole in our ranks and it's one of these five men!' without fussing too much over the details... or even which five cast members, exactly, that we're talking about.

Encore was asked by Matt Riviera to provide its list of the Top 10 films released theatrically in Australia in 2010 and, even though our specialty as a publication is local productions, it was a pleasant surprise to look at our final list and see two Australian films (and one with a considerable amount of Aussie talent) that deserved a spot in it. It wasn’t a pat on the back for the local industry, but a genuine recognition of the power of their stories and the skill of its execution.
The public is slowly starting to recognise it too; the top 10 highest grossing Australian films of 2010 made $45m at the box office, a figure that has brought optimism to an industry in desperate need of reassurance from the audience it serves.
This is the list Encore has contributed – and probably the only one topped by Toy Story 3, as animated films...

Sheila Hancock is one of the UK’s best loved and most prolific actors. Her work spans theatre, radio, television and film and she is also a successful writer. Sheila is currently performing as Mother Superior in Sister Act to rave reviews.
Her other theatre credits include: The Birthday Party at the Lyric Hammersmith, the role of ‘Fraulein Schneider’ in Cabaret in the West End, for which she won an Olivier Award, and the Clarence Derwent award.
She played ‘Mum’ in the Liverpool Playhouse production of The Anniversary (a role played by Bette Davis, while Sheila played the daughter-in-law, in the original film version), which then transferred to the West End and appeared in The Arab Israeli Cookbook at the Gate Theatre, Under The Blue Sky at the Royal Court Theatre, Vassa at the Albery Theatre in the West End and In Extremis at the Royal National Theatre.
