Last Hurrah for Michael Jackson
michael_the_nermal29 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
In light of Mr. Jackson's recent death, it bears remembering this peculiar special, which aired on ABC and Vh1 about six years ago. This has to have been one of the largest PR disasters ever in the history of entertainment. It is my understanding that Michael Jackson wanted to use this special as an opportunity to rehabilitate his public image, in light of the accusations made against him of child molestation and his criticism of Sony for failing to promote his most recent album. It seems every rumor and criticism about Jackson has some basis in reality, according to what we see in this special. This ranges from his penchant for spending gobs of cash on art and luxury items, to making his children wear veils, ostensibly to protect their identities. He denies all accusations of extensive plastic surgery, but admits to letting children stay for sleepovers (he argues that the sleepovers are nothing more than benign slumber parties, like any children would have with one another). Jackson's personal idiosyncrasies are laid naked for all the world to see, and the result is nothing short of saddening and pitiable.

Bashir seems kind of slimy, first trying to gain Jackson's trust then pouncing on him with questions about his plastic surgery, skin color, and the race of his children. It seems pretty clear Jackson would not at all be forthright in answering such questions. Still, one might admire Bashir for not going too easy or simply offering softball questions; still, I think he sometimes was a little hard on Jackson.

It seems a bit sadistic to admit enjoying this special as a guilty pleasure; still, I won't lie about liking this special when it first aired. While it may have lifted the veil slightly as to revealing who Michael Jackson is, it does not succeed in telling the whole picture. Given Jackson's alleged shyness and reclusiveness, the public will never know who Michael Jackson was as a man. This special does not answer everything.

what a joke!

Warning: Spoilers
The interview made Michael Jackson look sick and demented. The stupidity finally leaked out as he parades around his neverland ranch, named for the land that peter pan roams and flys in and out of wherever he pleases. the sad part is that michael actually believes this can happen to him, regardless of all his money and fame. the fact that sticks out, but not as far as michael's nose, that the superstar has gone too far and needs to be stopped. no decent man goes around and plays with little boys, it's sick and disgusting. the music has been going downhill, and now with the situation against him nowadays and again these accusations are poking out, doesnt it make any sense to society that michael is a pedophile? martin bashir helps the public that do take an interest in his unusual behaviors understand michael's situation. if an average joe was playing with children and frolicking around with young boys, he would be locked up, without the royal treatment. i feel that michael derserved the same and the tv interview shows that michael is truly sick and needs attention from the correct authorities. the rating of the interview is ok, but the stuff in the interview really stinks, and makes michael out to be a weirdo, and the truth is finally revealed. It's complicated.

Warning: Spoilers
Bashir tries too hard to show something scandalous or disturbing. Quite disgusting how judgemental he is when it comes to Jackson's appearance or silly things like the fact the singer liked climbing trees. But things get different when young boys in Jackson's bedroom becomes the topic. Then it really does get disturbing, even more so with the information we have today. It unfortunately seems that Bashir's view of this in particular was fair. I also give him credit for asking Jackson tough questions about other topics, like him being beaten by his father. And no matter what you think about Jackson's innocence, the film is pretty interesting to watch with quite a lot of unique footage. Though the film itself isn't aestheticly pleasing.

Shame on you Martin Bashir
karltanner-5666025 May 2018
Watch The Michael Jackson Interview: The Footage You Were Never Meant to See. That tells you all about how badly edited and how disgusting Bashir is. Obviously he has a hidden agenda against Michael Jackson.

Really a waste of time and Bashir should be ashamed of himself for treating him like that.

This is Only Half the Story

I strongly urge anyone who has watched this to also watch "The Michael Jackson Interview: The Footage You Were not Meant to See". The viewer will then become aware of how much this program was maliciously edited with a bias to make Jackson look freakish and bizarre, how remarks were taken out of context, and most shockingly how Bashir ingratiated himself with his subject by obsequiously pretending to befriend him. Mr Jackson allowed this man to practically live with him for months believing that he was sympathetic to his lifestyle and would help to advance his dream of a National Children's Day. Bashir's agenda seems to have been the exact opposite - his commentary suggesting to the viewer that Jackson was some sort of maladjusted monster. A disgusting abuse of trust and and a poor excuse for a journalist, in my opinion.

Lightweight at best
transitionstate9918 May 2004
The problem I have with the heavy handedness of Bashir's, ahem, journalism (and yes Mr. Moore-ibid you too)is that it just isn't any good. Which would be alright if Martin didn't have this almost pedagogical desire to come off as a concerned Smarty McSmarty. It doesn't take an intellectual heavyweight to see that Michael Jackson obviously has deep, deep trauma that's surfacing in a variety of disorders. A psych student would label him body-dysmorphic with their eyes closed. So why does Bashir keep beating the same questions to death? Does he expect Jackson to break down and admit that he's had 20 zillion operations? That he spends money in a vacant equilibrium? That he is constantly surrounded and protected by people that share similar delusions, and gosh darn it, that his problems might also manifest as sexual deviancy? Yes thank you, move on: There's enough pop-psychology out there for reference material and you're not really helping-just airing Jackson's subconscious demons. But that's exactly what Bashir doesn't do; instead he panders, and condescends in an annoying I-can-see-what-you-don't-Mr-Jacko-the-wacko way. That's not journalism, it's reporting. What would have been far more interesting is if Bashir didn't treat Jacko as some sort of man-child, a weird oddity to be probed and prodded, but used the interview time to understand the depths of one man's isolation and distortion of reality. Parents can leave their children for sleep overs in 'neverland'; doesn't that speak volumes about our current society, celeb status not withstanding. What about Michael's family? The father angle has pretty much been done to death, but the sibling moments haven't. Surely that would have satisfied Bashir's rabid tabloid fantasies while simultaneously exposing the underlying psycho-drama that must exist in the Jackson household. Instead we get Michael through the celebrity lens-bright and devoid of grit.

I'm not asking Bashir to throw away his vapid, objective reporting to create a far more emotionally challenging (and personal) work-it's not his style. But the least he could do is allow for a far broader commentary on the subject matter (and I'm not talking about shots of ogling fans). As of now 'Living with Michael...' is caught in some sort of limbo between paparazzi snapshot and good old fashioned nuts and bolts journalism. Is it too much to ask that Bashir make up his mind?

" The Man That Is Michael Jackson " ....
Theo Robertson18 November 2003
.... is how journalist Martin Bashir introduced this documentary on this one time superstar , so right away I was expecting lashings of irony and I got it and a whole lot more though I have to admit this is sometimes an uneasy watch .

A lot of people have come on here to put the boot into Bashir saying he set MJ up . I`m not too keen on Bashir myself since I`ve always found him something of a lightweight reporter but Bashir is blameless in getting Michael to say and do things on screen , everything weird , camp and disturbing from this documentary is down to Jackson not Bashir

Michael goes into a store - Which has been closed by request from MJ`s entourage - and buys millions of dollars worth of junk . Bashir`s fault ?

Michael and Martin drive around a track in go-carts with Jackson screaming " Oh stop it you`re cheating " in the most laughably camp voice I`ve ever heard . Bashir`s fault ?

Michael tells us his hobby is climbing trees and it`s his favourite thing in his life . Bashir`s fault ?

Michael takes his weirdly named children out for a walk with masks on their face . Bashir`s fault ?

Michael invites a 12 year old boy who`s suffering from cancer to stay on his ranch alone . This is the same Michael Jackson who ten years ago was hit by allegations of sexually molesting a young boy on his ranch and who instead of going to court to clear his name and be proven innocent of the allegations decided to give the alleged victim a multi million pound compensation deal . How is any of this Bashir`s fault ? I should also point out that as I`m writing this review Jackson`s ranch has just been raided by police earlier today

The only criticism I have with Bashir is that he didn`t ask the most obvious question which is this : " Michael if you`re an Afro-American then why do all your children resemble one hundred per cent white Europeans ? "

Worst interviewer I have ever seen
floydcarey-4534215 October 2018
This has to be the most biased and disgusting interviewer ever. He tries so hard to paint Michael(an amazing loving father, humanitarian and humble person) in bad light. Pretending to be so nice in front of him and then making fun of how he looks behind his back. Making fun of the serious horribly skin disease he suffered almost all his life. Bashir should be ashamed of himself. Horribly edited. Its like something you see in Fox News or something. It is very clear what they where after. All they care about is money. Disgusting.

The most dishonest documentary
lluberesluz9 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I've always hated hypocrisy. This guy pretended to be Michael's friend and complimented him off camera. None of this is seen in his documentary. I recommend that people watch a documentary that another reporter filmed showing all the footage of Michael's camera, which was filmed while this Bashir guy was doing the interviews but were removed from his documentary. Michael Jackson, Take two: The footage you were never meant to see.

Everyone go and watch "The Michael Jackson Interview: The Footage You Were Never Meant to See". It really shows how evil Bashir is with how he did the interview. Trying to make a kind and humble person look bad.

Injustice to Jackson
Xiphoid16 March 2003
Though obviously Michael isn't totally sane, but this, in my opinion, is hugely caused by his (lack of) childhood and the abuse by his father, it isn't said that he is a pedophile. I for certain do not think that he is one. I think that since he missed his youth, he's trying to catch up with that now, and if you see it from that point, have you never had a slumberparty with a friend when you were young? Or climbed a tree for that matter?

Martin asked questions in this documentary that were (for the majority) only intended to get Michael to look guilty and bad instead of giving a honest view of Jackson. Also he took the answers, twisted them around, and turned them into the answers he wanted to hear...

Anyway, it's a good documentary if you are sane and intelligent enough not to follow Bashir, but just to actually listen to what Michael has to say. For the majority of the people in the world, well, they'll probably go with Martin's profile of MJ, so therefor I've given it a 4

michael jackson is very caring, loving and sweet and he is the best.
ria_anastasio2 March 2003
I thought the "living with Michael Jackson" documentary was very unfair to him as it didn't portray him as he really is. People really annoy me when they criticise him and they don't know the truth about him. People say that he had plastic surgery on his face to make him white but haven't people heard of the disease vitiligo which he has. He is a very caring and loving father and loves being around kids because he didn't have a childhood & didn't experience things that most kids do. It's good that they are showing "Michael Jackson the footage you were never meant to see" on Monday 3rd march. Because then people will see the truth and no edited version like f*****g Martin Bashir. He allows kids to sleep in his bed but with him on the floor do you really think he really wants a sexual relationship with little kids? he just adores being around them. He wants to adopt 2 kids from every continent that must show that he wants to take care of them nothing sexual.Oh my God how can people think that, they must be sick themselves.

MICHAEL JACKSON RULES and I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Living with Michael Jackson
jboothmillard12 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the most watched programme's in 2003, we have no idea what Michael Jackson is like out of the spotlight, and we've had the trial when accused of abusing children, so we still question. Anyway, it is such a shame about what he has become, he is better known as Wacko Jacko, but I still wanted to see what he was like as a person. Martin Bashir is the interviewer who took up the challenge over about eight months to find out some of the most interesting parts of his private life. He tried to learn how to moonwalk, saw Jackson speak the English accent, visited Neverland, climbed his inspiration/giving tree, went shopping in Las Vegas, met his children, and much more. This programme was of course repeated after Jackson's tragic death aged 50, and I do still question whether he was right to be cleared of all charges, but I can ignore it and appreciate he was an outstanding singer and dancer. It was nominated the BAFTA for Best Sound (Factual). Michael Jackson was number 14 on The 100 Greatest Pop Culture Icons, and he was number 6 on The Ultimate Pop Star, and the programme was number 3 on The 100 Greatest TV Treats 2003. Very good!

is this what they call subjective journalism then?
william_blake14 March 2003
shame on bashir and shaw for being completely one-sided and prejudicing michael jackson before they ever even started shooting. it's clear they had only one idea; to make jackson look as bad as possible. i felt like i was sort of watching a sun tabloid. bashir is no better than any of the paparazzi's following. but michael wanted to be honest well there you go then.

i don't have an opinion about jackson in the issues raised on this document, since i can assure you I DON'T THINK I REALLY KNOW michael jackson after seeing this document. sure he seems strange and guilty of lying at points but no matter how hard you look you can't tell anything for certain about him, can you? please remember that when you start bashing him. meanwhile bashir catches every little mistake or a sign of "notnormaladultbehaviour", that jackson makes. "omfg he went on the stage early. holy **** he's climbing trees!" use your own brain, people and don't let bashir lead you.

"Propaganda is ... the deliberate attempt by some individual or group to form, control, or alter the attitudes of other groups by the use of instruments of communication, with the intention that in any given situation the reaction of those so influenced will be that desired by the propagandist."

oh, and btw ask yourself who is the craziest; weird michael, paranoid bashir, insane crying screaming dancing fans, or me for watching this document in the first place?

brutusalwaysminded25 September 2021
The interviewer and host is a typical putz but the film provides an interesting portrait of Mike. How this type of "journalist" even got in to participate in this project is an indication of the kind of people Mike allowed into his world - which inevitably led to his downfall.

A shocking documentary that hurt Michael
mj_zak15 February 2003
Having been a fan of Michael Jackson all my life I, like many others were anticipating this program since it was announced. Martin Bashir who was known for his famous interview with Diana followed Michael Jackson around for 8 months. This documentary was the result.

The last time that Michael had participated in such a detailed show was nearly 10 years ago with Oprah Winfrey. In this new one off special Michael tell's about his outrageous lifestyle and for the first time ever the world would get a glimpse of the Jackson children.

One of the most shocking aspects of this documentary was Michael's relationship with a 12 year old cancer sufferer and his admitting to sharing his bed with other children. Since that and other certain other things were revealed (including why his 3 children dont live with there mothers) there hasnt been a day where the press werent digging into michael Jackson's life and making it a living hell. So what, he let's kid's sleep over?! It's the king of pop for crying out loud!

Martin Bashir had deeply upset Jackson during the course of the interview but it still revealed the truth: That Michael Jackson is just a kid at heart.

He's not pedophile and he isnt trying to be something he isnt. He's jut a gifted entertainer with a child's heart.

I do believe that every effort was made to produce an honest portrayal of Michael, but it was some how sabotaged by the voice over's to make the public think of Michael as a negative aspect.

Bashir
latoutoune6 August 2016
How come a journalist like Bashir can tarnish the fame of a great genius like Michael Jackson... Insinuation of pedophily, homosexuality, weard eccentric..etc. I think M.J. already knew that he would leave earth at the age of 50 . He had some talked during a trip to Africa ... We helped both with our fantasies in the creation of this icon and still today, this man is a mystery. I regret sincerely that Michael passed away because of drugs addiction in some way linked with is incapacity of dealing with is own demons but Aldo with the foolishness of people who didn't understand real creation. They don't have any Idea of what is about thinking outside of the box !!!

R.I.P. My angel.

Awful
pirjo-naslund19 September 2010
It was all twisted. MJ loved kids but was not a pedophile.Martin Bashir did the documentary for sensational purposes and for the money making. Martin Bashir omitted all the kind things he himself said, but then left it out of the documentary. You can see all this in the Michaels own documentary which was filmed at the same time, and it gives a total different picture of Michael. Martin Bashir only wanted Michael to seem band and odd. He must have realized what this would do to Michael, where he in the end of the documentary questions all about Michael, his plastic surgery (why is that so important?) his relationship with kids (is it normal?)

Terrible Martin Bashir
katyasylum14 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Martin Bashir took total advantage of Michael Jackson. He told him that this would be an interview that would give him a positive light but yet actually makes him look like a terrible person? He shows Jackson's kids without the approval, constantly tries to ask the man about plastic surgery and the allegations, and has the audacity to even further ask about details that Michael obviously doesn't want to disclose and has strong emotion about. He continues to ask some of the same questions throughout even though answered, and says that a place like Neverland is not safe for vulnerable children but also praises it. This man cares about the money and doesn't care about the interviewee's feelings. (like with Princess Diana) I truly hope one day Martin Bashir realizes what he has done and tries to make things right.

He tried, but failed
sundancedarkhorse11 November 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Contains spoilers(yeah, but who would want to see this movie)-

The ultimate purpose of this documentary was to make him out to be a normal person, not the freak he is frequently portrayed as. I watched this hoping to see that he's not as freaky as I thought. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Not only is he a freak, but I now think he is mentally ill. In one scene, just right after he dangled his poor baby, he tried so hard to show he's a good father. You can see the desperation when he is jiggling the baby, sadly named Blanket. If you expect to see him as a normal guy, you're in for a disappointment. This provides furthur evidence that he is a freak.
