Film Movement has acquired North American rights to Spanish writer-director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren’s “20,000 Species of Bees,” a tender drama about growing up trans that recently won a Berlin Film Festival Silver Bear.
The New York-based distributor is planning to roll out this topical title — in which the child protagonist explores her gender identity — in U.S. theaters in late 2023, followed by a wide release on all leading home entertainment and digital platforms.
The announcement was made by Film Movement president Michael Rosenberg and Jennyfer Gautier, the head of international sales of Paris-based distributor Luxbox.
In the Spanish-language drama, 8-year-old Aitor, who is nicknamed Cocó, travels with her mother Ane and two older siblings to visit their grandmother in a sleepy village in the Basque Country. It’s here, amongst beehives, that Aitor explores her identity alongside the women of her family who, at her request, start to refer to her with male pronouns.

There isn’t much to recommend The Strip, a new indie movie that opened in select theaters last weekend. The comedy about minimum wage employees at a strip mall is practically begging for comparisons with the cult hit Office Space but actually comes across like a less funny Employee of the Month. The Strip would be guaranteed a spot in the dustbin of late-night cable if it wasn’t for a surprisingly touching performance by Dave Foley. Foley plays the middle-aged manager of Electri-City, an electronics store in a desolate, possibly Californian strip mall. His character is a caricature at best, but there are flashes of genius in Foley’s performance. When an Electri-City employee violently shakes one of Foley’s collectible snow globes, Foley becomes flustered by the unexpected chaos. “Why don’t we wait for this to settle,” he says, apparently needing the flakes to settle down before he can think clearly.

Make-up luminary Christopher Allen Nelson and Employee of the Month scribe Mitch Rouse have teamed up to pen Supermax, a horror story based on the ghostly and presumably murderous criminals that populate a maximum-security prison. A lone prison guard must team-up with an inmate after a violent riot occurs in the jail sending the duo into a fight against an “army of monsters.”
The story was picked up on spec by Sony Pictures according to Bloody Disbusting.
Shooting is set to begin in 2010 with a 2011 release.

NBC's three-month talent search for actors to inhabit The Office -- a pilot loosely based on the BBC comedy series -- may be coming to an end. Sources said the network and Ben Silverman's Universal-based Reveille and Universal Network TV are considering The Daily Show correspondent Steven Carell for the lead, a middle manager at a paper company, played in the original series by co-creator/writer/director Ricky Gervais. Rainn Wilson (HBO's Six Feet Under), Jenna Fischer (Employee of the Month) and John Krasinski have been cast in the other three roles. Reps for NBC stressed that there is no deal in place with Carell. Sources said the situation is complicated by the fact that Carell is attached to another NBC series, the midseason comedy Come to Papa.

Rouse will make his directorial debut on the project, which will go into production June 2 in Los Angeles. It stars Dillon as David Wells, whose day spirals from bad to worse when he gets fired from his dream job at the bank and is dumped by his fiancee Sara (Applegate) after she discovers that he's been cheating on her with a co-worker. David's best friend Jack (Zahn) tries to convince him it's for the best, but the opposite occurs when bank robberies and millions of dollars become part of the day from hell.
