Patients don’t see Dr. Andover (Robert Englund) for a typical check-up. They instead pay the good doctor a visit to tackle their phobias in the Fear Chamber, a device that helps those inside it to face their fears via realistic hallucinations. Based on the 2009 FEARnet.com series of the same name, Robert G. Hall’s Fear Clinic feature film hits home media on February 10th, and Anchor Bay has provided us with two Blu-ray copies to give away to a couple of lucky Daily Dead readers.
“When trauma-induced phobias begin to re-emerge in five survivors a year after their horrifying tragedy, they return to the “Fear Clinic,” hoping to find the answers they need to get cured.
Dr. Andover (Robert Englund), a fear doctor who runs the clinic, uses his “Fear Chamber” to animate their fears in the form of terrifying hallucinations. However, the good doctor soon begins to...

News moved slow on this one, but sources at the Texas Frightmare convention tell me that Robert Hall - director of Lightning Bug and the Laid to Rest films - told fans that Laid to Rest 3 is in the works. We've got few details to go on, but this isn't surprising news since Hall and the team behind the film have been talking trilogy since day one. ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 was an entirely independent effort and later picked up by Image Entertainment.

Welcome back to The Stack. This week's releases were exceptionally fun to sift thru and I'm especially glad to be able to chat about some obscure stuff you might not have heard of before. The disturbing Compliance, the surprisingly effective Lightning Bug from way back in 2004, the almost lost forever Wake In Fright, the outright weird occult thriller The Possesion and even weirder but far more interesting horror romance Jack and Diane. Themes this week ranged all over the place from spirituality, to coming of age, to the role of authority and first love. ...

With the recent Blu-ray release of Lightning Bug from Image Entertainment, I had a chance to talk with star Ashley Laurence and director Robert Hall. You may know Robert Hall from his effects work or Laid to Rest movies, but his first directorial effort was Lightning Bug in 2004 and it’s not what most people would have expected from him. During our interview time, I talked to him about going with a drama over an effects-heavy movie, revisiting the movie after all these years, and what projects he’s planning to direct in the future.
I know that Lightning Bug is a personal story for you and based on some of your past experiences. Can you tell me a bit about your time growing up in Alabama and how the story eventually evolved into Lightning Bug?
Robert Hall: I moved there when I was nine and I felt like a fish out of water.

Based, supposedly, in large part on the life of its writer and director Robert Hall, Lightning Bug is an odd mix of eclectic elements that comes together in a lumpy mass that’s at some moments fascinating in its small town drama and at others over the top in its acting and writing. It’s as if it can’t decide if it wants to be a down-to-Earth story about an young man attempting to break free of his dismal home life or a hokey love story with horror elements that pay too earnest an homage to stereotypical caricatures. Were it not for Bret Harrison, Laura Prepon, and Ashley Laurence at its center, Lightning Bug would have been smushed into a glowing paste beneath the weight of its unnecessarily goofier elements.

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre DVD releases for the month of January.
Lightning Bug (2004) Image Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Effects guru Robert Hall’s semi-autobiographical film about a small town teen (Reaper's Bret Harrison) who has aspirations to become a special effects artist. An opportunity to manage the town’s local haunted house is thwarted by his alcoholic stepfather and the staunchly religious views of the surrounding population. The solid supporting cast includes That 70’s Show’s Laura Prepon, Hellraiser’s Ashely Lawrence and Kevin Gage. Written and directed by Hall, it’s an affectionate coming-of-age drama that works in spite of an uneven narrative that falls apart in the final half hour. Hopefully this new extended cut will remedy the scripting problems of the original release.
Special Features include:
* Never-before-released extended cut of the film.
* Making-of Featurette
* Audio commentaries with the writer/director and cast.

I recently interviewed Robert Hall to discuss the Blu-ray release of Lighting Bug. While we’ll be posting the full interview shortly, I wanted to let readers know what he had to say about his remake of Chopping Mall and another movie he’s planning to direct called Rotten Face.
You may not remember hearing about the Chopping Mall remake, because the last we reported on it was back in late 2011. Robert Hall’s Dry County Entertainment acquired the rights to Chopping Mall with plans to go into production in early 2012. Robert Hall’s Lightning Bug is now available on Blu-ray, and I had a chance to talk with Hellraiser‘s Ashley Laurence earlier today about her role in the movie. I just recently had a chance to watch the Blu-ray version of Lightning Bug and really enjoyed your performance in it. How did you first meet up with Robert Hall and why was Lightning Bug a movie you wanted to be involved in?
Ashley Laurence: I met Robert working on a horror film in Ireland, and we bonded creatively over some of the aspects in that film. We became friends and he told me he was writing a story that was semi-autobiographical. I was supportive of him and he wanted me to be a part of it.

Rob Hall and his Almost Human FX have crafted an endless series of vampires, demons and creatures of the night for the likes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Burrowers, The Crazies and The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Hall since directed Lightning Bug and the bloody-as-hell Laid To Rest movies; and now taken Chromeskull's knife to the metal legend Scott Ian's face.

One of my first experiences when I started doing this whole “horror reporting” thing many years back was getting an advance screener of a little film called Lightning Bug from a then pretty unknown first time director named Robert Hall.
He sent along a DVD-r screener and I was promptly blown away.
I was writing for the now defunct Creature Corner then and have long since lost my review but needless to say, it… More...

Makeup FX artist Robert Hall (pictured) has been best-known as a director for his ultragory Laid To Rest movies, but he launched his filmmaking career with the gentler but still genre-friendly Lightning Bug. Hall gave Fango the scoop on that movie’s upcoming Blu-ray release, along with a first look at the cover and a few words on his next movie.

There’s kind of a thing with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Doesn’t it always seem like when Tim Burton sits down to make a movie, Johnny Depp plays a main character? There was a similar bond between director Nick Millard and Priscilla Alden. In this instance, Priscilla Alden—who opened up Millard’s alteration from softcore porn to horror cinema with the 1975 Criminally Insane—appears in many, many Millard films. She’s not alone. There are a bunch of other actors—only about four or five others, really—who appear constantly in every single horror movie Millard made up until Death Nurse 2 in 1988. To some, the fact that so few different actors just shows that Millard was a lazy filmmaker who didn’t have any friends. And to me, it shows that there’s something else: continuity. A shared universe. Something that goes beyond just one or...

I always loved the title Chopping Mall. It was one of those titles that just screamed Rent Me from the video store shelf back in the day. The movie was a bit of a wild ride, about killer robot security guards hunting down teenagers in a locked up mall.
News drops tonight that a remake is in the works, no real surprise there, but what is surprising is the announcement that Robert Hall will be helming the remake.

Now, it’s not exactly horror, but I think Robert Hall’s 2004 character piece Lightning Bug has something that a die hard horror fan can really get into. It’s a semi-biographical (let’s hope) little movie that really took me by surprise.
In it, Green Graves (Bret Harrison) is a teenage FX prodigy living in Nowhere, Alabama just trying to scrape enough cash together to get to Hollywood, where he’s sure his ability to make pretty damned impressive gore gags will get him to the top. The problem is that he has to overcome his poor white trash status to get there.
What could’ve been a preachy is here handled with absolute honesty, which is especially impressive considering that writer/director Hall was pretty green to cinematic storytelling when he tackled his own biopic. The man had already earned his status as...

There is nothing good that can come from running into a guy with a big silver plate fused onto his head. Nothing. And if you don't believe me, you need only to flip to your Video On Demand menu and order up ChromeSkull: Laid To Rest 2. That's right, the knock-out film released at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 is now available in the comfort of your home.
The people have spoken and demanded a chance to see this uber-bloody sequel to the popular original, and Image Entertainment responded. Come on, you know we've all got an affinity for shiny things, and with a tag line like "Death Polished," who wouldn't be rushing to their television to check this one out?
Nick Principe returns to portray ChromeSkull and brings Brian Austin Green, Johnathon Schaech, Thomas Dekker and Danielle Harris with him. Check it out!

Can’t wait until September 20th for the Blu-ray and DVD release of ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2? Image Entertainment sends word that Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2 is now available early on video-on-demand services.
ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 picks up three months after we last left ChromeSkull (Principe) at the end of the original Laid to Rest. Tommy (Dekker), who’s struggling to come to terms with his encounter with the masked killer, has now gone missing courtesy of the maniacal Preston (Green), a mysterious player in the sequel with a sinister connection to ChromeSkull. Meanwhile, our killer has set his sights on a new girl, Jess (Michaels), and after the young girl disappears, Detective King (Yeoman) must race against the clock to find her and Tommy before it’s too late and try to put an end to ChromeSkull’s deadly legacy.

Vampirism—an all-too-real affliction, driving people to feast on human blood. It sounds horrific, but it gets worse. There’s a type of vampirism called exploitation—an unsettling but sometimes pleasing meal of domination over the weaker, though not just that; the filmic record of human pleasure on the subject of domination. The mere word “domination” is exploitative, because we’ve tied it to human sexuality. Domination is one of the keywords of exploitation and exploitation is vampirism. Vampirism is horrific. And thus we have Uta—a film from born-again horror director Nick Millard, from his sleazy sexploitation days. A film that shows the director at his lowest in the days before he reached his highest—when his highest was the eerie mind-screw known as Criminally Insane. But more on that later…
Uta is one of those prostitutes that you joke about who isn’t doing it to go through college.

Whilst not perfect, 2009′s Laid to Rest turned out being one of the better slasher flicks of recent years. Director Robert Hall delivered a movie that screamed out for a sequel, due mainly in part to the memorable killer known as Chromeskull. Well now both director Hall and Chromeskull actor Nick Principe are back for the sequel Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2. Due to hit the stores on September 20th from Image Entertainment Chromeskull will be available on Unrated DVD and Blu-ray and Rated DVD.

The Our Idiot Brother soundtrack. Some might say that marketing/advertising is a profoundly dishonourable profession. That it’s all a three-ring circus operated by slick-talking snake oil salesman, peddling premium-priced versions of the emperor’s new underpants to gullible schmoes, with this in turn further fuelling the excrement-spewing media pipeline that pumps crap directly into the poor unsuspecting public’s collective cranium.
And when you find that a movie which was called My Idiot Brother just six months ago, when it played to a largely positive reception at Sundance, has now been rechristened Our Idiot Brother ahead of a Us release at the end of next month, it’s hard not to wonder just how many marketing monkeys it took to change that particular re-branding light bulb, and how much green they scored for their (lack of) efforts.
But if the name-change smacks of tinkering for the sake of charging an oversized fee,...

This week's column actually stretches two weeks back as things have been a little slow on Netflix's streaming service. A slew of quality additions was immediately followed by a dry patch. Now that it seems most of the country is suffering from a monstrous heat wave (it was 103 degrees here in Texas yesterday!), I imagine you guys are looking for something to do inside where it's cool.

In 2009, writer/director Robert Hall (Lightning Bug, Fear Clinic) introduced horror fans to a new face of horror: ChromeSkull, the mysterious and relentless killer who hunts down young women and records their grisly demises, all while donning a iconic silver skull mask and a video camera strapped to his shoulder. And while it may have seemed like ChromeSkull was dead at the end of the first Laid to Rest, like every good horror villain, dead doesn’t always mean dead.
