Fresh off the success of her third studio album, Red Moon in Venus, and a sold-out tour, Kali Uchis is back with more dates and more new music.
Featuring Dominican dembow singer El Alfa and City Girls’ Jt, “Muñekita” is a grooving track with a fairly standard, irresistibly-dancey reggaeton beat (though Uchis has posted online that the album will not be primarily in the reggaeton style). Still, the single marks the onset of “a new era of Spanish-language music” for Uchis, according to the press release.
For her part, Uchis explained how excited she was to work with El Alfa and Jt. She first connected with the artists via DMs, and the collaboration was born out of the three’s mutual admiration. “I love bringing artists together that you’d least expect,” Uchis said in a statement. “El Alfa is a Latino legend and Jt is someone I’ve admired forever.

Margo Price has reinterpreted her Strays track “Change of Heart,” which originally had sort of a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers gone country vibe, as a sparsely adorned acoustic song. The song now has a dusky, campfire feel, as she and country artist Sierra Ferrell slow it down and plumb new emotional depths in the lyrics. Price’s husband, Jeremy Ivey (who also cowrote the song), plays guitar on the tune while Billy Contreras plays fiddle.

From 1978 until her retirement in 2013, Nanci Griffith, who died August 13th at age 68, included numerous cover songs in her repertoire from writers as diverse as Nick Lowe and Paul Carrack (“Battlefield”) to Guy Clark (“Desperados Waiting for a Train”) and Julie Gold, whose “From a Distance” had been roundly rejected until Griffith became the first to record it. She even once covered the Rolling Stones’ “No Expectations” on Austin City Limits.

Cody Johnson has recorded a cover of Willie Nelson’s classic “Sad Songs and Waltzes” as the first single from his upcoming album. To make a bold move even bolder, Johnson recruited Nelson to sing and play on the tune, which originally appeared on the 1973 album Shotgun Willie.

When Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Tate Reeves of Mississippi both rescinded statewide mask mandates this week and declared their states were reopening at full capacity, the news caught live music venues in both states off-guard. It also left them with a decision to make: follow their governors’ rosy decrees or maintain the Covid-19 safety protocols they’ve had in place for months.
Despite Abbott and Reeves’ enthusiasm — “I just announced Texas is Open 100%. Everything,” Abbott tweeted on March 2nd; “It is time!” Reeves followed — the majority of club...

Julien Baker stops herself to apologize. “I don’t know why I’m now telling you the footnotes of my thesis,” she says, with a typical dose of self-consciousness.
It makes perfect sense that Baker has slipped into full academic mode, talking about jazz and “the subjectivities of language” — because, lately, the 25-year-old singer-songwriter has spent much more time in a classroom than on stage. Last year, feeling worn out and struggling with some long-brewing personal issues after three years of non-stop touring, Baker decided to pause her career and...

The latest episode of the long-running live-music series Austin City Limits includes a loving tribute to the songs of the late, great Guy Clark, who died in 2016. Hosted by Steve Earle, and featuring his band the Dukes, the hour-long episode includes Clark and Earle’s fellow Texans, Rodney Crowell, Joe Ely, and Terry and Jo Harvey Allen.
Kicking off the episode is Earle’s stirring performance of Clark’s wistful “Dublin Blues” — the title cut off the songwriter’s 1995 album — which opens with the sweetly prophetic line, “I wish I was in Austin.
