Writer/director Philippe Mora interviews Dennis Hopper about playing legendary 19th century Irish Australian outlaw Daniel Morgan in his movie "Mad Dog Morgan." Hopper reveals that he arrived in Australia a couple of weeks early so he could learn as much as possible about the country and met fellow actor Jack Thompson at the hotel (Thompson advised Hopper that he should do his best with his performance as Morgan). A hardcore Method actor, Hopper confesses that he drank vast amounts of rum in order to portray Morgan. Hopper remembers co-star David Gulpilil as a sensitive guy with a certain child-like innocence and a rare natural intelligence (Gulpilil went walkabout during the middle of production to ask the trees about Hopper; they told him Hopper was crazy). Hopper visited Morgan's grave after finishing the picture and got drunk; he was arrested by the Victorian police and placed on the first plane to Hollywood. The mellow and charming Hopper also talks about how the hippies were terribly naive in the 60's and that drugs destroyed that particular era, visiting London, England in 1965, how he knew he was bucking the major mainstream studio system when he made "Easy Rider," and that he's a great admirer of Francois Truffaut's work. Worth seeing for fans of the movie.
