Montreal's minimalist electronic duo Majical Cloudz is gearing up to release Are You Alone? the follow-up to 2013's superb Impersonator, and today Vulture is streaming the title track. Like "Silver Car Crash," the first song released off the new album a few weeks back, "Are You Alone?" is structurally skeletal but heavy on the atmospherics, with muted percussion and billowing keyboards. It reminds me of the poppier side of '70s art-punk influencers Suicide. "Silver Car Crash" was inspired by a series of Andy Warhol paintings about death, but this track, front man Devon Welsh says, is "a song about life! People doing things and feeling things and falling all over the place! Lots of emotions! Just trying to keep going! Sometimes it’s easy! Sometimes it’s hard! It’s a song about caring what happens! To other people!" Live a little and listen to it here exclusively. Are You Alone?...

Entertainment Geekly is a weekly column that examines pop culture through a geek lens and simultaneously examines contemporary geek culture through a pop lens. So many lenses! (Note: This post contains copious plot information about 24. I’m assuming you’ve either seen 24 or you’ve made peace with the fact that you’ll never watch it. But if you start watching now and don’t take any breaks, you have just enough time to watch the best years of 24 before it disappears from Netflix.)

Angelina Jolie takes on Sleeping Beauty while Terry Gilliam tackles Berlioz as the stars come out to confound our expectations in the coming year
Film
Angelina Jolie in Maleficent
Hollywood's most formidable leading lady is back after a relatively quiet spell, in a role playing on her scariness and seniority. This reinvented fairytale is a twist on The Sleeping Beauty, and Jolie is not playing the insipid dormant heroine with her crybaby attitude to finger-pricking but the evilly magnificent Maleficent, the sorceress who casts a spell on the demure young Princess Aurora. How did she get that way? Everything will depend on the script – but Jolie is always a great turn. Peter Bradshaw 30 May.
Natalie Portman in Jane Got a Gun
Natalie Portman is a Hollywood A-lister who first came to prominence in George Lucas's Star Wars prequel trilogy. She was compellingly vulnerable in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan,...

So sad! One of the most influential figures in rock ‘n’ roll history passed away on Oct. 27. He was 71 years old.
Lou Reed, the founder of the influential alt-rock band The Velvet Underground, died on Oct. 27. The cause of his death has not yet been released.
Lou Reed: Rock Legend Dies At 71
Lou was 71 years old, and had recently undergone a liver transplant in May 2013, according to Rolling Stone. And in July he was hospitalized for severe dehydration.
He is one of the biggest names in music history alongside Bob Dylan and John Lennon. He revolutionized rock ‘n’ roll in the late Sixties by marrying grungy alternative rock with avant-garde concepts, and is often credited with spawning the punk rock movement. He also employed a lyrical honesty that had never been heard before with his band The Velvet Underground and later as a solo artist.

Elliott Gould and Martin Short have joined John Mulaney's comedy pilot loosely based on the comedian's life. Gould will play the gay neighbor. While I'm excited to have a gay elder on television, this production is from Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live, so I don't have high hopes for how they'll handle it.

December is a month that increasingly sees few releases of new albums, so the closer this list gets to the present day, the fewer albums of importance there are to discuss, and most of those are hip-hop albums.

Traffic: Mr. Fantasy Aka Heaven Is in Your Mind (Island)
Shortly after Steve Winwood quit the Spencer Davis Group (of which he was the lead singer and organist), he formed Traffic with some guys he'd jammed with at a club in Birmingham: guitarist/vocalist Dave Mason, saxophonist/flutist Chris Wood, and drummer/lyricist Jim Capaldi. After a couple of hit singles, they convened at a country cottage and put together the debut album by Traffic, titled Mr. Fantasy in their native country. By the time it was released, Mason had already quit.
The English and American editions were rather different. Not only did the U.S. LP (on United Artists) have...

Michael Lee Nirenberg is an artist and filmmaker living in New York. His current documentary is Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story.
Bradley Rubenstein: Your most recent action, Redacted, involves overpainting your past works black, repeating this performance from canvas to canvas. Has the result of this performance series turned it into something like a trademark, a signature style based in old Suprematist methodology, a non-dialectical negation that might once have been witty but ultimately only guarantees its own recognition? A gimmick? Has it replaced your work as a filmmaker and documentarian?
Michael Lee Nirenberg: Originally the project began with the immodestly modest premise that, while my earlier paintings might not be worth preserving, the idea of my past history as an artist was. Therefore, by removing the imagery, as such, from the work, I was maintaining its conceptual integrity. In many ways I believe that this conceptual...

Warrior; Abduction; Johnny English Reborn; Restless; Dolphin Tale; Friends With Benefits
Cementing his reputation as Hollywood's best-loved wounded bear, the gruff Nick Nolte recently picked up his third Oscar nomination essaying yet another broken-down has-been in the mixed martial arts punch-up pic Warrior (2011, Lionsgate, 15). He plays Paddy Conlon, a recovering alcoholic and troubled father whose fractious relationship with his fighting Irish sons provides the dramatic backbone for this pumped-up, pugilist spectacle.
A quasi-mythical tale of two estranged brothers, one a renegade war veteran, the other a bruised teacher, destined inevitably to sort out their differences in the arena, Gavin O'Connor's punchy upmarket exploiter has been widely compared with Rocky but actually owes a far greater debt to Gladiator – not Ridley Scott's lavish, award-winning sword-and-sandals epic, but Rowdy Herrington's altogether cheaper and more cheerful 90s boxing romp. Like Herrington, O'Connor understands the visceral pleasure of watching two muscular...

“Downtown 81 represents Manhattan’s last stand as a beatnik haven for creatively driven impoverished artists, a moment where everyone was connected in one giant electrical circuit creating their own cultural power.”
Downtown 81, featuring a nineteen year old Jean-Michel Basquiat, captured the movers and shakers from the no wave, hip-hop, graffiti, and alternative fashion scenes, as they collided down in the depths of New York’s lower east side. Originally shot by director Edo Bertoglio in the winter of 1980-81, it remained unreleased for nearly twenty years before being re-assembled in 1999 by co-producer Maripol Fauque (a Polaroid photographer and fashion designer, behind the iconic look for Madonna on the cover of Like a Virgin). Basquiat first acquired notoriety in the early eighties New York art scene with his ‘Samo’ graffiti slogans, which caught the attention of TV Party host Glenn O’Brien. Director known for his documentary about the making of the film Apocalypse Now
The films of the American director George Hickenlooper, who has died unexpectedly aged 47, straddled several genres, but he will be best remembered as a documentary maker thanks to his most celebrated work, Hearts of Darkness: A Film-maker's Apocalypse (1991). This riveting account of the troubled gestation of Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam war epic Apocalypse Now (1979) combined behind-the-scenes footage shot by Coppola's wife, Eleanor, with retrospective accounts by the cast and crew.
Hickenlooper observed "a strong parallel between Francis making the movie and the war itself. He really delved into the most sordid aspects of his own character." As Apocalypse Now's budget and schedule ran out of control – and its leading man, Martin Sheen, had a heart attack – Coppola was consumed by fears and self-doubt, as captured in the documentary. "There were too many of us,...

This is the 6th post in a series covering the most outrageous moments in underground film history. You can follow the entire series here.
Film: Empire
Director: Andy Warhol
Year: 1964
During his entire filmmaking career, artist Andy Warhol filmed lots of outrageous stuff. With films with titles like Lonesome Cowboys, Nude Restaurant, Mario Banana, Suicide, Bitch — and worse! — it was clear Warhol liked to shock, enrage and embarrass his audiences.
However, the most outrageous thing Warhol ever filmed? The Empire State Building. One shot. For six hours straight. Well, Warhol filmed the topmost portion of the then world’s tallest building for six hours, but when projected he slowed the film down so that he expected audiences to watch a single, static shot for over eight hours.
According to Warhol assistant Gerard Malanga in the Victor Bockris biography The Life and Death of Andy Warhol, filmmaker John Palmer came up with the concept for Empire.

Welcome to the weekly Newsroom Poll, where we will give you a sneak peek into the lives and minds of some of the correspondents, writers, editors and producers here at MTVNews.com. Every week, they'll answer a poll question that will reveal some of what we talk about behind the scenes here in the newsroom. Enjoy!
This week, details surfaced about one of the most hotly anticipated albums of the fall. No, not Jay-z's The Blueprint 3 or Lil Wayne's Rebirth. We're talking about the soundtrack to "New Moon," which will likely feature contributions from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Muse, Kings of Leon and Death Cab for Cutie. There was also the announcement of the soundtrack to "Jennifer's Body," the new Diablo Cody-penned horror film. With that, combined with the quarter-century anniversary of one of the finest film soundtracks ever constructed (that being Prince's Purple Rain), this week's question is:...

Body Count: Volume 12 Some of my earliest horror movie memories are in the early 80's. I was a cartoon junkie like most kids my age and you know how it goes on any saturday morning. Or maybe you know how it used to go. Get up wicked early, pour a massive bowl of cereal and hunker down for a good five solid hours of cartoon programming. From 7am to noon you could find all manner of colorful adventure but like most communities, noon time rolled around and it was time for kids to go outside and play so the grown ups could catch the weekend edition of the news or candlepin bowling. At least that's how it was around these parts, except for one thing. Back in the early 80's, we still had a holdout saturday afternoon monster movie show. Ours was Wlvi's Creature Double Feature, a show so patently...
