Baz Luhrmann, George Miller, Robert Luketic, Alex Proyas and Phillip Noyce have carved out impressive careers in Hollywood over the past three decades. A second wave of directors are also now carving out impressive Us careers . and flying under the radar in their homeland.

Everyone starts somewhere, and for Aussie director Peter Cornwell, whose latest flick The Haunting in Connecticut has proven a Us blockbuster, it started in the corner of a notepad. "My mum used to have these medical pads that flick really well and I'd draw little characters on the bottom of the pad and show them to my friends. I'd do little flick movies. That's when I realised ‘Oh wow, that's kinda cool' and people were impressed so I thought well why don't I get a camera and shoot some actual animation?" Advancing from flick pads, Cornwell moved on to creating a stop motion animated short, Ward 13.

As of late, extreme interest in established franchises has created more than a fleeting disinterest in the spec script market, leaving original ideas out in the cold. However, the science fiction genre has reinvigorated a taste for original scripts with the success of Moon and District 9. Now another sci-fi spec script gets a shot at glory as Variety reports that director Peter Cornwell (Ward 13, The Haunting in Connecticut), seen above, has been set to direct The Panopticon, which follows a salesman who receives a pre-recorded message from himself that tells him the world is about to end and only he can save it. But there's more to it than that. Without ruining too much of the story (having read the script) the conflict comes from not knowing exactly who to trust as the "good guys," including the main character himself. Plenty of twists and turns make for an...

(Exclusive to The Hollywood Interview. The director of The Haunting in Connecticut sits down with us to talk about the making of his first feature, as well as the creation of his rollicking and hilarious stop-motion short, Ward 13.)
Ward 13, director Peter Cornwell’s 2003 micro-budgeted stop motion short film, is easily one of my all-time favorite pieces of animation. The 14-minute film introduces us to the plight of Ben, a heavily-bandaged man who wakes up in a true hospital from hell, and spends most of the rest of the story attempting to escape from evil doctors who seem intent on performing experiments of mutation upon him. The set pieces are marvels of action-comedy, with enough escalating stakes, pitfalls, and pay-offs to rival the best of vintage Spielberg. Mixed throughout...

The Haunting in Connecticut is a not quite scary enough retelling of a true life/death 1980s ghost story. Sara and Peter Campbell’s son Matt is sick with cancer, and to be nearer the hospital, they move into an old Victorian house in upstate Connecticut. Unfortunately for all of them, the house used to be owned by a mortician who used mutilated dead people and a boy-medium to commune with the Other Side. The very pale Matt, already close to death’s door, starts to have his dreams invaded by the gruesome ghosts and visions of the mortuary’s cruel history. Tone-wise, more Amityville than Others.
I know you’re gagging to know what that stuff coming out of his gob is in the poster, so I’ll just tell you,...

Some houses carry memories, and as Fango is ushered onto the set of Lionsgate’s long-anticipated, fact-based ghost story The Haunting In Connecticut (opening March 27), it’s clear that this house is one of them. The scene today is an intense exchange between actors Virginia Madsen (returning to the horror genre over a decade after Candyman and The Prophecy) and Kyle Gallner (recently seen in Red) as mother and son, in the aftermath of a paranormal visitation.
Wooden chairs are piled from floor to ceiling in an unnatural configuration, the way a building destroyed by a tornado takes on an unrecognizable, abstract shape. Hidden behind this mound of furniture is the retreating body of teenaged Matt Campbell (Gallner), sweating, shivering and grasping onto a wall marred with bloody scratches. His mother Sara (Madsen) approaches him with a mix of trepidation and concern, as unnerved by the sight of her hysterical son as we are.

Virginia Madsen will star in A Haunting in Connecticut, a supernatural thriller that Peter Cornwell is directing for Gold Circle.
Haunting tells the true story of a family forced to relocate near a clinic where their teenage son is being treated for cancer. There, they discover that the home they have rented is a former mortuary with a dark history that might account for the extraordinary manifestations of the boy's illness and the supernatural events that threaten the family.
Tim Metcalfe and Adam Simon wrote the screenplay.
Gold Circle Films is financing. Mandate Pictures will handle international sales.
Gold Circle topper Paul Brooks is producing with Andrew Trapani, Wendy Rhoads and Daniel Farrands. Scott Niemeyer, Norm Waitt and Steve Whitney are executive producing.
Gold Circle's Brad Kessell, who brought the project in, is overseeing.
A late summer start is being eyed.
Cornwell, repped by UTA and Gotham Group, wrote, produced and directed the acclaimed animated short film Ward 13.
Madsen, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Sideways, most recently appeared on the big screen opposite Jim Carrey in The Number 23. She is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
