Few directors venture into both animation and live-action due to the vastly different skill sets required. Some successful directors like Wes Anderson and Guillermo del Toro have mastered both mediums. Experimenting with different animation styles can bring a fresh perspective to storytelling for versatile directors.
Most directors choose to stick with either animated movies or live-action, but some directors are versatile enough to excel at both. Animation and live-action require vastly different skill sets for directors. This is why so few directors stray from their comfort zones. Even some of the most adventurous directors working today have yet to cross over from live-action to animation. However, some live-action directors have made brilliant animated movies in recent years. It's becoming more often for successful directors to dip their toes into animation.
Some directors see animation as just another option in their tool kit, and they'll resort to it if they believe that's what the story requires.

Patton Oswalt's first acting gig was on Seinfeld, where Jason Alexander helped him break the tension on set with a joke. Oswalt's retail experience as a video store clerk helped him impress Seinfeld co-creator Larry David during his audition. Even with just a few lines on Seinfeld, Oswalt's naturalistic acting style stood out and helped launch his successful career.
Years before he would become famous for playing Spence Olchin on The King of Queens, Patton Oswalt booked his first acting gig on Seinfeld, and his on-set nerves were immediately quelled by one of the main cast members. Oswalt isn't the only actor who got their start on the show about nothing, as Seinfeld has featured many guest stars before they were made it big, from The White Lotus' Jennifer Coolidge to Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham and Scott Peterson.

Ratatouille includes a dark Finding Nemo Easter egg in a pantry scene with a reference to Nemo Brand Caviar. Despite its family-friendly nature, Ratatouille hides dark Easter eggs such as violent scenes and a cynical critic nicknamed "The Grim Eater." Pixar movies often tackle dark topics, and Ratatouille takes it further with hidden sinister references that may have slipped past viewers.
Pixar movies are full of Easter eggs and references to past and future movies, but Ratatouille went a bit too far with a dark Easter egg that connects to one of Pixar’s biggest box-office hits. Pixar is now a powerhouse in the world of animation, and it all began in 1995 with Toy Story, the first entirely computer-animated feature film. Since then, Pixar has brought a variety of stories exploring different cultures, settings, and worlds, and not all of them have been human. Falling into that category is Ratatouille,...

In the new issue of the Film Stories magazine, we spoke to The Inventor director Jim Capobianco. Here’s a little taster of that chat.
Delightful and eccentric stop-motion movie The Inventor is the first feature film from Jim Capobianco, the director of Pixar’s Ratatouille short, Your Friend The Rat.
I recently had the pleasure to speak with him at length for Film Stories magazine – order your copy now, go on, why don’t you. The interview was so lengthy, in fact, that lots of interesting bits were left on the cutting room floor.
What follows are two short sections that might be of particular interest. Here, not only does Jim explain why he found it hard to get Italian producers to back his film about the great Italian Leonardo da Vinci, but he also answers my questions about casting Stephen Fry, Matt Berry and Daisy Ridley in light...

U.S. director and producer Robert Rippberger, who recently wrapped sci-fi thriller “Renner” with Frankie Muniz, is headed to the European Film Market in Berlin to launch the sales unit of his banner Sie Films. Its slate will be fronted by his next project, the horror thriller “Monstrosity.”
“Monstrosity,” which is currently in pre-production, is a creature feature that Rippberger will produce and direct. To create its titular monsters, Rippberger recruited concept artist Aaron Sims, whose work includes “Stranger Things,” “Ready Player One” and “Wonder Woman 1984.” Production on the film is expected to kick off later this year in one of the Morgan International full-service special effects facilities in Europe. Writer Sabir Pirzada is producing “Monstrosity” alongside Rippberger.
“Monstrosity” opens on a young village boy who goes missing down a mine shaft. His father blames a strange family in the neighboring house, but of course far more is at play.

National Geographic just launched A Real Bug’s Life, a premium wildlife documentary based on the Pixar movie.
Courteney Monroe, president of National Geographic Global Television Networks, said that this is only the start in terms of it adapting Disney IP.
Monroe was asked whether she could see a real-life version of Ratatouille and said it was a “good idea”.
“There is such a rich IP to mine and there’s so much shared DNA between the Nat Geo and Disney brands that we are exploring lots of opportunities,” she said at the TCA press tour. “You can imagine maybe a real Finding Nemo and other franchises there, where there’s so many families with young children on the Disney+ platform that would gravitate to the real world storytelling around this franchise.”
Earlier this morning, Nat Geo renewed A Real Bug’s Life, narrated by Awkwafina, for a second season, due to launch in the fall.

Jeffrey's Toys, the store where Pixar creatives always went to brainstorm ideas for the Toy Story films will be shutting down for good.
The San Francisco-based store that helped inspire the Toy Story franchise will permanently go out of business by February, according to Sfgate. Jeffrey's Toys is closing its last remaining store after 86 years in business, which at its peak operated in seven locations throughout the Bay Area. The store's co-owner Matthew Luhn cited several factors for the closure, which included unsustainable operational costs, local security, and the market's shift to online shopping. Luhn grew up in the family-run store before he pursued a career in animation, eventually working as a writer and story director at Pixar for films like Cars, Ratatouille, and Monsters Inc.

Last year, Hollywood took stock of the potential — and dangers — of generative artificial intelligence. As use of the human-mimicking chatbots evolved into a sticking point in the strikes, creators took to the courts, accusing AI firms of mass-scale copyright infringement after their works were allegedly used as training materials. In the backdrop of these legal volleys, a question stands out: Why haven’t any major studios sued to protect their intellectual property like other rights holders?
One answer involves the possibility that they’re still negotiating with AI companies, with the aim of striking a licensing deal. A grimmer scenario involves the potential that they want to harness the tools for themselves to cut labor costs. Another involves the possibility that they’re biding their time to compile evidence and keep an eye on how the other cases are progressing.

At the intersection of interests for cinephiles and foodies lie great movies about food. Films like "Big Night," "Ratatouille," "Babette's Feast," "Tampopo," and "The Trip" movies occupy a special place in the stomachs -- er, minds -- of viewers, and I'm pleased to report that another movie has instantly catapulted into that hallowed pantheon.
"The Taste of Things," from director Trần Anh Hùng, received a limited theatrical release earlier this year for awards consideration (it's the French contender for Best International Feature at the 2024 Oscars), but it won't actually receive a bigger release in the United States until February of 2024. Still, for those who vibe with the types of movies I listed above, this will be a major event at the movies. And aside from being only a great movie about food, it's also a great movie, period -- it's technically one of the best of 2023, but even if you...

Illumination is a rare animation studio, in that they have landed upon a formula for the majority of their films and they seem perfectly content in hewing to that formula no matter what stories are being told. The studio thrives on mid-budget films that bring together a recognizable ensemble, some pop songs, and stories that feel vaguely cribbed from Pixar Animation Studios without being out-and-out plagiarism. Illumination, like DreamWorks, also leans heavily on turning its films into lengthy franchises, which has given us the obnoxious and leaden "Despicable Me" series (including its multiple "Minions" spin-offs), the obnoxious and leaden "Sing" films, and the obnoxious and leaden "The Secret Life of Pets" films. For this holiday season, Illumination is trying to do another original film, but much like the first "Secret Life of Pets", the new film "Migration" is original in name only, while feeling like a flavorless mishmash of "Finding Nemo" and "Ratatouille.

The earliest days of Pixar Animation saw the now-beloved movie studio producing many of the most beloved animated films of all time, while simultaneously changing the film industry with their groundbreaking use of three-dimensional CGI animation. After the success of the first Toy Story in 1995, Pixar quickly followed that film up with 1998’s A Bug's Life and 1999’s Toy Story 2.
These first three films in the late ‘90s established Pixar as the new powerhouse in animation. However, it was in the 2000s that the studio would cement itself as one of the best animation studios of all time. There were many films produced by the studio throughout that decade, such as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille, but 2001’s Monsters, Inc. arguably tops them all.

In just a few weeks, the 18th recipient of the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature will be revealed. While it is highly likely that the new winner will share a 3D visual style in common with nearly all of its predecessors, voters may instead decide to finally honor a fully hand-drawn movie for the first time. Fittingly, this monumental distinction would be credited to the legendary Studio Ghibli and its esteemed cofounder, Hayao Miyazaki, who suspended his brief retirement in order to make his dozenth film, “The Boy and the Heron.”
With an original plot that pointedly references the classic Japanese novel “How Do You Live?,” “The Boy and the Heron” is the 25th entry in Studio Ghibli’s animated canon and the company’s 10th film released after the creation of this Golden Globe category. Although four of its post-2005 productions earned Oscar notices for Best Animated Feature,...

Society of the Snow is based on the true story of a group of rugby players who survived a plane crash in the Andes mountains in 1972. The film has received positive reviews and has been nominated for multiple awards. The movie is scored by Michael Giacchino and was directed by J.A. Bayona, known for his emotional storytelling.
The trailer for Netflix's upcoming film, Society of the Snow, is a thrilling and heart-wrenching look at what this movie has to offer, but it avoids revealing the two biggest creative weapons behind the film. Maya Hawke is bringing out the awkward tween emotion that Gen Zers know all too well: anxiety.
Hawke stars in “Inside Out 2,” the sequel to the 2015 Oscar-winning Pixar film. The Disney movie won Best Animated Feature and was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, one of only four Pixar films to be nominated in that category.
While Academy Award winner Pete Docter does not return to write or direct “Inside Out 2,” the original cast is back in full force, with Amy Poehler playing Joy, Phyllis Smith voicing Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale playing Fear, and Liza Lapira starring as Disgust, all voices inside growing tween Riley’s head.
Now, Hawke’s Anxiety takes a wrecking ball to the inside of Riley’s mind as emotions bicker, battle, and tumble toward the confusing state of puberty. Kelsey Mann directs the film, which is produced by Mark Nielsen.

AI-generated art reimagines movies like Top Gun, The Shining, The Wolf of Wall Street, Mad Max, and Saving Private Ryan as animated, Pixar-style adventures. Pixar movies are designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences, featuring universal themes and messages. A movie like The Wolf of Wall Street might not be a good candidate for a Pixar reimagining due to its mature subject matter, but Top Gun, which is about learning to work as a team, could be a great fit for a reimagining.
Top Gun, The Shining, and more get the Pixar treatment in a fun batch of AI-generated images. Pixar was officially founded in 1979, and has since produced some of the most beloved animated movies of all time. The animation studio, which is now owned by Disney, is responsible for classics like Toy Story, Up, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, and the sci-fi film Wall-e, among many others.

The success of the film No Hard Feelings has brought attention to the careers of Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman, with comparisons being made to an Oscar-winning actor. Jennifer Lawrence praised Feldman's improv skills, comparing him to Christian Bale, whom she had worked with previously. A hit comedy film in 2023 has proven that a classic Pixar movie could work well as a live-action remake. Andrew Barth Feldman's performances in "No Hard Feelings" and the "Ratatouille" musical show that he would be the perfect choice for the lead role in a live-action "Ratatouille" remake. A live-action "Ratatouille" movie would have the advantage of portraying real food and could pave the way for future Pixar live-action adaptations.
Not all Pixar movies deserve a remake, but a 2023 hit comedy film proves that a 16-year-old Pixar flick should finally be considered for a live-action adaptation. Although Disney's strategy of traversing age-old animated films to the live-action medium was initially met with criticism and skepticism, live-action Jungle Book's critical and commercial success established that it was not a bad idea after all. After The Jungle Book paved the way for live-action adaptations of classic animated films, many movies like The Lion King,...

Walt Disney Studios has produced some beautiful movies over the years that have gone on to stand the test of time. While there have been some that have been argued as problematic, there are others that have been both uplifting and inspiring in their meaning.
The darkest Disney movie quotes have a lasting impact on a movie and can really set the tone for each scene. In the same way, there is an abundance of profound quotes said by various characters that have allowed audiences to really consider the depth and heartfelt messages each film wants to convey.
Belle Saw People for Who They Truly Were "He's no monster, Gaston. You are!"
Belle goes through quite an ordeal in Beauty and the Beast before she is met with a happy ending. A whimsical and bright young woman, Belle isn't interested in the supposedly attractive Gaston, who pursues her even though she shows no interest.

David Ellison’s fledgling Skydance Animation — run by head of animation John Lasseter and president Holly Edwards — has moved its movie slate from Apple Studios to Netflix. The multi-year streaming deal commences with next year’s musical fantasy “Spellbound,” directed by Vicky Jenson (“Shrek” and “Shark Tale”), featuring the voice talent of Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, and Javier Bardem, and boasting a score from Alan Menkin and original songs with lyricist Glen Slater. It’s about a princess who tries to reverse a spell that transformed her parents into monsters.
Set for release in 2025 is “Pookoo,” a buddy comedy about two enemies — a woodland creature and a majestic bird — that magically trade places. It’s helmed by former Disney director Nathan Greno (“Tangled”), with original music composed by Siddhartha Khosla.
Also in the works are two prestigious features that are a result of Lasseter’s strong relationships with directors Brad Bird...

Celebrity voice actors often face criticism for being seen as a publicity gimmick, but some surprise performances excel in their roles without relying on their fame. Vin Diesel's deep, resonant voice brought childlike wonder to the Iron Giant, while Mark Hamill's portrayal of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series is considered one of the best. Serena Williams made a cameo in Avatar: The Last Airbender, James Woods provided a charismatic take on Hades in Hercules, and Ron Perlman's voice captured the threat of The Lich in Adventure Time.
Many classic animated series over the years have featured voice performances from talent famous for other endeavors. Celebrity voice actors are often criticized by fans of animated mediums, their presence being seen as a gimmick to stir up publicity. Voice acting is also a very different beast from traditional acting, and the two skills don't always overlap as easily as one would think.

Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter acknowledges the need for the studio to shift its focus and double down on the themes that have resonated with audiences in the past. Elemental, while initially facing criticism for its loose storyline, gained momentum at the box office after a poor opening, but is still considered one of the weaker projects by Pixar. Pixar's recent films, such as Elemental and Luca, have strayed from the simplicity of their older works, and there is a need for the studio to return to its roots and tackle real-world themes.
Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter emphasizes how the studio's movies are set to change after Elemental. Docter is the mastermind behind renowned Pixar projects, including Monsters, Inc., Up, and Inside Out. The director took over for John Lasseter in the executive Pixar role in 2018. Elemental is the latest movie to release in theaters under the banner.

Casper, the live-action adaptation of the Friendly Ghost, featured a fully CGI lead character and a darker storyline about Casper's tragic past. The Ghostly Trio, consisting of Stretch, Fatso, and Stinkie, play a key role in Casper's comedy and are known for scaring the living. Stretch is the tallest and most aggressive of the trio, voiced by Joe Nipote, while Fatso is corpulent and dim-witted, voiced by Brad Garrett. Stinkie, voiced by Joe Alaskey, uses his bad breath to scare people.
Casper introduced the audience to the title Friendly Ghost, but with Casper also came the Ghostly Trio, and here’s who played these chaotic but fun characters. New State Pictures has joined forces with Curiosity Rights to secure the life rights of scientist Susan Solomon, who led pioneering research into the destruction of the ozone layer in the 1980s.
The partners plan to produce a film that will place a spotlight on how the work undertaken by Solomon and her team led to global awareness of the issue and action to resolve the crisis.
Solomon, then only 30, along with her team, unearthed findings that have shaped our approach to environmental preservation. Pixar has been one of the most reliable animation studios for nearly 40 years. They've consistently churned out some of the best-animated films of all time, such as Toy Story, Monsters. Inc., Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, and many others. For the most part, almost every movie has earned critical and audience praise, with a few exceptions.
Besides high quality, there's one more thing that people can always count on with Pixar – the voice of John Ratzenberger. He began his career with the animation giant in their very first film by voicing Hamm in Toy Story and its sequels. Following that, every Pixar movie over the next 25 years featured a voice performance from Ratzenberger. Some were major or supporting roles, and some were just quick cameos. But his voice was always there. Until it wasn't.
Ratzenberger's last Pixar voice role came in 2020's Onward, infamous for its release the week before the first worldwide Covid-19 shutdowns.

With “The Inventor,” Jim Capobianco (the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of “Ratatouille“) has managed to direct a family-friendly animated musical (in both stop-motion and 2D) about Leonardo da Vinci’s search for the meaning of life at the end of his life. That’s quite a da Vinci code to crack. That is why it took 12 years to make as a co-production with Curiosity Studio (Ireland), Foliascope (France), Aerial Contrivance Studios, and Robert Rippberger’s Sie Films.
Capobianco’s fascination with da Vinci began with the 2009 2D short “Leonardo,” after intense research into his legendary life as an inventor of flying machines, artist, and pioneer in the study of human anatomy. But what sparked Capobianco’s interest was the notion of da Vinci as “a real person struck with ideas beyond the technical, intellectual, and the societal capabilities of his time.” For him, “The Inventor” explores legacy, how you live your life,...

The Inventor is an animated movie that explores the humanity behind Leonardo da Vinci's art, highlighting his search for the meaning of life. The film features a star-studded cast, including Stephen Fry as da Vinci and Daisy Ridley as Princess Marguerite de Navarre. The animation style of the movie combines 2D hand-drawn and stop-motion, each presenting its own challenges in production.
The world may know Leonardo da Vinci as a great artist, but few have thought about the person behind the legend. Jim Capobianco focuses on the humanity that drove the art in his new animated movie The Inventor. He wrote and directed the project, with Pierre-Luc Granjon serving as co-director, after first stepping into da Vinci's shoes in 2009 with his silent short film Leonardo. Animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often, animated movies are some of the most original, memorable, and well-told stories of the entire year yet they are, more often than not, confined to the category of Best Animated Picture.

“Beauty and the Beast” was the first animated movie to do so, landing a Best Picture bid in 1991. Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, “Beauty and the Beast...

The Menu and Ratatouille are not the best back-to-back features for a movie night, but the two films actually have more in common than you might initially expect. The former is an eloquent criticism of elitism and class dynamics whereas the latter is... also an eloquent criticism of elitism and class dynamics. Though these two movies share similar themes and messages, that connection is likely difficult to be seen because of how they are presented. The Menu is a thriller meets satirical dark comedy starring the one-of-a-kind yet personable Anya Taylor-Joy, while Ratatouille stars a rat voiced by Patton Oswalt, so the two films don't exactly lend themselves to comparison with one another. However, the heart of each movie is deeply similar to each other as they both present relatable protagonists, a critique of wealthy entitlement, and a deeply personal affection for food and cuisine.

Pixar movies are often complete stories that don't require sequels, but audiences still crave them due to the detailed and fun worlds created. Several Pixar movies, such as A Bug's Life, Ratatouille, Wall-e, and Up, have not received sequels, either because they were overshadowed by other films or because their stories were self-contained. While some movies like Brave and The Good Dinosaur have sequel potential, it's uncertain if they will actually receive follow-ups due to factors like box office performance or the studio's philosophy on creating sequels.
Pixar is one of the greatest and most consistent animation studios, but some of the studio's best movies surprisingly have no sequels. Pixar has made a name for itself when it comes to telling engaging stories that adults can relate to just as much as children do. The only other animated studio that comes close to Pixar's layered, emotional, and heartfelt storytelling is Studio Ghibli.
