Even if late Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell actually had a crystal ball, he couldn’t have possibly imagined the latest dramatic developments in the world of his band. Twenty-eight years after Nowell’s tragically early death, two entirely separate versions of Sublime will be touring in 2024. And no one’s happy about it, especially Rome Ramirez, who will be playing numerous contractually obligated shows billed as Sublime with Rome — the final concerts for that band — even as original bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh reunite for Coachella and other festivals as plain old Sublime,...

Jeopardy!‘s Tournament of Champions is bigger than ever this year.
To celebrate its 40th season, the American trivia institution invited a record-breaking 27 contestants to its hallowed annual tourney featuring the previous season’s best champions. (It also certainly didn’t hurt that the show needed to add some extra tournaments for ToC eligibility due to the Hollywood writers strike messing with its usual production schedule).
The expanded contestant count has given Jeopardy! the opportunity to invite back some intriguing contenders who didn’t hit the required benchmark of at least five wins in their initial run. It’s also meant that the show has gotten to try something it’s never done before: bring on a Celebrity Jeopardy! champion to contend with the “real” trivia masters.
Said Celebrity Jeopardy! champ on this year’s ToC is comedic actor Ike Barinholtz, who you may know from his time on Mad TV,...

If there’s any evidence that television has become a medium equal to film in recent years, it's the sizable budgets that are generated for high profile series. HBO was certainly at the forefront of bringing incredible scale and scope to their television output, as genre programs like Game of Thrones, Westworld, and The Last of Us featured a level of intimate production design, epic action sequences, and fully-fleshed out universes. While these marquee franchises certainly succeeded in guaranteeing a loyal fanbase of viewers based on the programs’ vast popular culture influence, they weren’t the first instance in which HBO tried its hand with an ambitious ensemble genre series.Despite being canceled after its second season, HBO’s Rome was a compelling history lesson that found creative ways of reinterpreting some of the most pivotal events in medieval history. Although the show was packed with memorable actors, Ray Stevenson...

Huge budgets don't always lead to success. Many recent shows have struggled to justify their costs. Big-name actors, lavish costumes, exotic locations & CGI can all drive up TV budgets. Expensive shows are often ruined by audience expectations, but some great shows are worth every penny.
A massive budget doesn't always ensure that a show will be successful, but a few great shows have managed to live up to their exorbitant price tags. There have been plenty of big-budget TV flops over the years. Even the most expensive shows of all time can end up looking like costly duds. Citadel and The Rings of Power are just two recent examples of shows that have struggled to justify their immense costs. They could still turn things around, but reviews of their first seasons have been seen through the lens of their highly publicized budgets.

Kaiju from Pacific Rim have influenced modern monster designs, showcasing unique features and bioengineered weaponry. Mega-Kaiju, Slattern, and Otachi stand out as iconic and destructive creatures in the Pacific Rim franchise. Pacific Rim's kaiju, while not as popular as other monsters, have distinctive traits and appearances worth recognizing.
The kaiju of the Pacific Rim franchise deserve more credit for their creative monster designs, even if some of their city-destroying creatures are cooler than others. The original Pacific Rim helped popularize the use of the word "kaiju" in the West when referring to massive monsters like Godzilla or King Kong, using the term as a catch-all for the series' monsters. Even if the franchise hasn't managed to harness its initial popularity as well as Warner Bros.' Monsterverse, it still harbors some awesome kaiju worth praising for their memorable appearances.

High budgets don't always guarantee success in TV shows, as proven by the cancelation of many expensive series. Critically acclaimed and commercially successful shows, such as Game of Thrones, have had high budgets but exceptions exist. Sometimes even large-scale, prestige productions like Rome can get canceled due to various reasons, not just costs.
Many TV shows with enormous budgets have wound up canceled, with networks cutting their losses after a season or two. Theoretically, a higher budget should set higher standards for the TV series, as, at the very least, it should look well-made and have a talented cast. In reality, so many factors are at play when making a television show that no amount of money can guarantee success. Recently, Amazon Prime developed two of the most expensive shows ever, Citadel and The Rings of Power, which received mixed critical receptions, calling into question the use of their enormous budgets.

Not all TV shows get the endings they deserve, leaving audiences craving more from beloved characters and storylines. Series like Mindhunter, Firefly, and Freaks and Geeks were cut short, missing out on their full potential and fan satisfaction. Successful series like Game of Thrones also left viewers wanting more, with endings that didn't fully resolve character arcs.
There are several TV shows that have completed their runs that lack resolution in some form. Concluding a TV series is the most crucial step in solidifying its legacy, and, whether due to cancelation or a relatively ambiguous ending, some shows left the audience wanting more. That's not necessarily a bad thing. In the case of Succession, the ending was absolutely incredible, capping the HBO series off as one of the best TV series ever. Yet, given how fascinating the characters are, there still seems to be a lot that's unexplored.

HBO is a remarkable network that has brought audiences some compelling dramas in its long and storied run. HBO productions are known for their authenticity and high attention to detail. Shows like Rome or The Sopranos are both ground-breaking series praised for such a characteristic. This trend had to start somewhere, though, and it began with a series called Philip Marlowe: Private Eye. According to the show's producer, David Wicks, it's the first-ever drama series produced for HBO. Philip Marlowe: Private Eye is an American mystery series starring Powers Boothe as Raymond Chandler's fictional character, Philip Marlowe. The series aired in the US from April 1983 to June 1983, with the second season airing in April 1986 and ending in June 1986.

Perhaps putting his Shia Labeouf-scripted Auschwitz film on hold––how you feel about that prospect is a fantastic Rorschach test––Abel Ferrara has a New Rose Hotel / Go Go Tales reunion in store. As his documentary Turn in the Wound debuts at the Berlinale, he’s well into development on American Nails, a gangster film that will star Willem Dafoe and Asia Argento and roll cameras this summer. [Variety]
Almost needless to say Ferrara wouldn’t, at this wild stage of his career, simply return to classic territory: as written by him and Rossella De Venuto, it retells Euripides’ Hippolytus “in a tale set in the gangster world of primal violence, power and revenge [that] pits Argento against the male-dominated remnants of power and entitlement, in the shadow of the Roman Empire in contemporary Italy.” Ferrara’s last time in Rome, Zeros and Ones, is among the wildest visions of the...

The show’s first trailer was released before its two-episode release on March 15.

In the wake of a viral TikTok trend that sent women across the world asking their significant others how often they think about the Roman Empire, now is the perfect time to revisit HBO’s masterpiece Rome. Although only two seasons long, the series remains the single best depiction of ancient Rome in the history of film or television. This is due to four key factors: its historical accuracy, its uncompromising depiction of the ancient world, its clever use of fictional characters to tie historical threads together, and its superb writing staff (which includes New Hollywood icon John Milius). As we examine what made Rome so special, we’ll see why it still looms large over all other depictions of the ancient Roman world.

Until the neither disappointing nor remarkable "Frasier" reboot, the beloved sitcom on which it was based had been off the air for almost 20 years. Running from 1993 to 2004, "Frasier" came to represent the gold standard for '90s sitcoms, alongside contemporary hits such as "Friends" and "Seinfeld." A big part of the show's success was that star Kelsey Grammer seemed to have been born to play the titular doctor, portraying his egoism and fastidiousness with the perfect balance of humor and earnestness. But the show was also propelled by a truly stellar supporting cast.
David Hyde Pierce might have thought the script for the "Frasier" pilot was "terrible" at first, but he very quickly realized how well-written the show was and throughout the show's run delivered a consistently brilliant performance as Frasier's equally stuffy brother, Niles. Alongside Peri Gilpin as Frasier's radio producer, Roz, John Mahoney as Frasier and Niles' father,...

One Piece's second season on Netflix will require the casting of the beloved character Ace, who plays a crucial role in the storytelling. Ace's casting requires an actor who matches his imposing visage, edge, optimism, and empathy. Diego Tinoco, Danny Ramirez, Aaron Dominguez, David Castro, Eman Esfandi, Michael Cimino, and Xolo Maridueña are potential actors who could bring Ace to life in One Piece season 2.

Rome, the host of The Jim Rome Show, the longest running, nationally syndicated long-form sports talk program in America, will launch a digital video show airing throughout the year on X starting after the Super Bowl.
The deal will see Musk’s company and Range develop and produce at least 10 shows, across various genres and formats.
It is thought to be the first multi-show slate deal for the controversial social media platform, although Musk has signed the likes of Tucker Carlson to launch...

Cameron Diaz defends Jamie Foxx against rumors of on-set meltdowns, praising his talent and professionalism. Production of Back in Action was halted due to Foxx's hospitalization, not his behavior, and Diaz supports his decision to remain silent about both his health and rumors. The movie, also starring Glen Close and Andrew Scott, is expected to be released in 2024.
Cameron Diaz has spoken out in support of Jamie Foxx following reports of his “on-set meltdowns” earlier this year while filming their Netflix movie, Back in Action. At the time, it was reported that Diaz had been caught in the crossfire of Foxx screaming and shouting at people, as well as firing three people from the movie in the midst of his rant. However, it seems that this was perhaps not the case, as Diaz has now explained.

Actress Cameron Diaz has given her fans her top bit of advice for a happy relationship. The ‘Me, Myself and Irene’ star, 51, tied the knot with Benji Madden in 2015 and has continued to gush about her man and their relationship.
The Hollywood star has provided a bit of advice she thinks is key – sleep in separate bedrooms, reports Mirror.co.uk.
Despite the ‘Shrek’ actress recognising it’s a controversial idea, she is adamant it’s a genius idea and is urging people to “normalise” the way of thinking.
“We should normalise separate bedrooms,” Cameron told the Lipstick on the Rim podcast. “To me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I’m fine. And we have the bedroom in the middle that we can convene in for our relations.

Denzel Washington is setting a new career trend by taking on roles in two upcoming movies set in ancient Rome, including Gladiator 2 and a film about Hannibal the Conqueror. This trend of Washington starring in ancient civilization films is a more specific continuation of his previous role as the titular king in 2021's The Tragedy of Macbeth. While both movies are set in ancient Rome, they will have different tones and focus, with Gladiator 2 expected to be more action-oriented and spectacle-driven, while Washington's Hannibal film will likely delve deeper into the history of the conqueror.
Denzel Washington's new movie has revealed an odd pattern, setting up a great new career trend after his casting in Gladiator 2. Post Malone enjoys using his international tours as opportunities to check out local watering holes, particularly those that offer karaoke. He had some free time to do just that in New Zealand a couple of nights ago, singing Sublime’s “What I Got” and The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” to patrons of Danny Doolan’s Irish Pub.
“I met Posty last night in my bar Danny Doolans in Auckland, asked him if he could get on stage and he actually did it!!! "Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom" isn't hitting theaters until December, but "Saturday Night Live" took full advantage of getting franchise star Jason Momoa to host the show before he gets super busy on the international publicity tour. Momoa first hosted "SNL" back in 2018 before the release of the first "Aquaman" movie, and it was a pretty decent episode that happened just before Christmas, giving us a new holiday favorite with Momoa as a member of Santa's Elf on the Shelf team.
Sadly, this new "SNL" episode taking us into Thanksgiving week wasn't nearly as good. Strangely enough, this felt more like it was Momoa's first time hosting rather than his second trip to Studio 8H in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. While there are a couple of standout sketches, many were subpar, a couple squandered great premises, and some were just plain bad.
So let's dig into the highlights from Jason Momoa's second time hosting "Saturday Night Live.

“Mainly, the struggle was really getting a good balance between the music and the sound effects, because there’s a lot of music in the show,” reveals Ben Cook, the multiple Emmy-winning sound designer for the Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” the long-gestating show in the MonsterVerse franchise that premieres November 17 on the streamer. He speaks with Gold Derby’s Latasha Ford before a packed launch event at the DGA Theater in Hollywood earlier this month. He says, “You’re talking about sequences where you have these creatures fighting each other, so it’s very bombastic. The music’s bombastic, and people are yelling, which is bombastic. So there’s a lot of competing elements… It’s a lot of sound, and we had a lot of fun doing it for sure.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

With all the talk of super-hero fatigue, it’s interesting to note that we never talk about espionage fatigue despite the steady stream of spies from a variety of franchises. One of the oldest and long-running series is, of course, Mission: Impossible. Once a lauded television series, it transitioned to film in 1996 and somehow, 27 years later, it’s still chugging along, in some ways invigorated with new life.
Led by the once-ageless Tom Cruise, he remains the fittest sixty-something actor in the world, continuing to do his own stunts and working with his personal guru Christopher McQuarrie, who returned for the newest offering, Dead-Reckoning Part One, out now from Paramount Home Entertainment.
The filming was originally intended to shoot back-to-back with the film’s released a year apart. Then came Covid-19 and now the Sga strike so those plans got scuttled. That said, their threat, Artificial Intelligence, has proven increasingly timely with every passing month.

Gladiator, the Oscar-winning 2000 movie from Ridley Scott, takes creative license with the factual events of Ancient Rome, but some aspects reflect real historical truths such as the process of granting freedom to gladiators. The character of Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator is fairly historically accurate, depicting him as a competent and fair ruler who co-ruled alongside Lucius Verus. While Gladiator suggests that gladiators achieved celebrity status, they were actually seen as lowly and their purpose was to fight and die. However, it is true that gladiators included product placement in their routines.
Movies based on real life are never completely accurate, and the Gladiator historical accuracy has been hotly debated since the Oscar-winning movie came out in 2000. There are several things that this movie fictionalizes, including the main character, the fate of the villain, and even the events that happened in the military and gladiatorial battles of Ancient Rome. Sublime with Rome have unveiled their latest EP, Tangerine Skies, featuring four sunshiney, new songs from the band. Stream it below.
Produced by the band’s Rome Ramirez, the tracks on Tangerine Skies capture the California ska sound that Sublime perfected three decades ago, with syncopated guitars, grooving beats, and strong vocal melodies. Lyrically, the songs allude to feelings of pain and confusion, but balance out the difficulties of life with its joys, ultimately landing on a message embracing peace and contentedness.
The title track conveys this perfectly, pairing a mid-tempo, acoustic guitar-led arrangement with lines like: “I learned to love the small things/ Had to learn to let it go/ Many rivers I have yet to cross/ But I know that I’m on the right road/ And I know I’m gonna get there.” Stream the EP and check out the music video for the title track below.

Now that the Roman Empire trend has swept across the Internet, it's possible that some scripts that take place in that period are ready to become the next Rome or Vikings. Roman drama television and films have been popular for some time, but since HBO's Rome, very few productions about the civilization have surfaced. Barbarians on Netflix and Domina on Sky have promising stories to tell despite going unnoticed. One promising future show is Those Who Are About To Die, which is being made by Peacock. It's based on the book that inspired Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott.
The question "How often do you think about the Roman Empire?" has passed from couple to couple across the Internet. But the answers shouldn't be a surprise because, through modern media history, the Roman Empire has graced big and small screens with classic movies and television. One of the USA Network's most beloved television series is "Monk," which aired from 2002 to 2009. A police procedural comedy owing a lot to Sherlock Holmes (but set in 2000s San Francisco), the show followed Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub). A detective with crippling obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd) and social anxiety, Monk was once a police officer but retired after the death of his wife Trudy. He semi-comes out of retirement years later as a private consultant and that's when the series begins. Thanks to his performance as Monk, Shalhoub won three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series, and the finale ("Mr. Monk and the End") broke cable ratings records.
In 2020, Shalhoub and his castmates starred in a mini-reunion for Peacock, "Monk In Quarantine." Monk, an infamous germaphobe, goes the extra mile with safety precautions during the Covid-19 pandemic while his friends check in on him over Zoom. Evidently,...

Driven by a TikTok trend in September, the Roman Empire became a popular topic online, especially fueled by a trend that emerged on TikTok in early September. The trend consists of women asking their boyfriends and husbands how frequently they think about the Roman Empire and being surprised by the answer.
The TikTok trend primarily suggests a male inclination towards the Roman Empire. Looking at the audience demographic breakdown of popular shows in the genre, we can see that their audiences are mostly made up of men, but not overwhelmingly. Beside Starz’s “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” and UK’s “Britannia,” shows that men made up almost two-thirds of the audience, the other shows on our list below have a balanced gender breakdown. In the case of Netflix’s docudrama “Roman Empire,” the audience is even slightly female-skewed.

Francis Ford Coppola has spoken out on a recent trend — women asking men in their lives how often they think about the Roman Empire.
The auteur revealed that he often thinks about the empire’s rise and fall, and then tied Roman history as the inspiration for his upcoming, self-financed film, Megalopolis.
“How often do I think of Ancient Rome? Quite a lot,” Coppola wrote. “The Roman Republic served as the example for my country America and its institutions, and was the inspiration for my upcoming film Megalopolis.
“My fascination with the Roman Republic is based on the struggle between the political parties during which the interest of the Republic yielded to the ambitions of a few powerful men who espoused the aims of political parties to establish their own fortunes and authority by relying upon armed forces to achieve those ends, dealing the final blow to a constitution already tottering to its fall.

“How often do I think of Ancient Rome? Quite a lot,” Coppola wrote. “The Roman Republic served as the example for my country America and its institutions, and was the inspiration for my upcoming film Megalopolis.

The Cult Movie Museum is back with an overlooked science fiction gem: 1989’s Robot Jox. Robot Jox was produced decades before the Pacific Rim and Transformers franchises.
In a post nuclear holocaust world war is outlawed. Conflicts between governments are settled by giant fighting robots piloted by heroic Robot Jox.
Reanimator director Stuart Gordon and producer Charles Band create a fun, believable future society on a lean budget.
If you like pre-cgi practical effects you’re going to love this movie. It’s packed with stop motion, puppetry and large scale miniatures, all shot under the blazing hot desert sun.
Stars Gary Graham of Alien Nation and Anne-marie Johnson of In The Heat Of The Night are terrific, though it’s hard not to be upstaged by giant flame throwing robots!

Everyone knows the problem: there’s too much really good TV these days, and not enough time to watch it all. But if you’re a fan of gripping, adult drama that follows twisted, complicated relationships with high stakes, it’s well worth putting aside a few hours of your time to watch Sky Atlantic’s Domina.
Domina is the story of Livia Drusilla, the wife of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus. The historical Livia is a truly fascinating character. Her father fought and died with the assassins of Julius Caesar, she endured a siege with a toddler, then she ended up married for 50 years to the man whose army was on the attacking side in both cases. She had more power and influence than any other woman in Roman history and worked together with Augustus to help him rule, but his reign was peppered with the untimely deaths of multiple family members,...

Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’ Is Studio Ghibli and Gkids’ Biggest Marketing Challenge Yet
It’s been 10 years since animation master Hayao Miyazaki made a film and 12 years since Gkids took over North American distribution for the studio he co-founded and helped make iconic. But though “The Boy and the Heron” — which opened to raves out of TIFF on Thursday — is likely the last Miyazaki film Gkids will have the privilege of releasing, it’s also the distributor’s first.
“The Wind Rises” in 2013 was still released domestically by Disney and Touchstone (it made $5.2 million). And though the distributor’s annual Ghibli Fest has grown year over year in “spreading the gospel” of Ghibli and Miyazaki, as the distributor’s president Dave Jesteadt puts it, having a new film from the man himself is a different challenge entirely.
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel tremendous pressure. That’s also joined by a feeling of tremendous honor,” Jesteadt told IndieWire.

Martin revealed that his favorite TV series finale is from Six Feet Under, praising it as the best in television history. Despite rumors of a possible revival, HBO confirmed that there are no plans for reviving Six Feet Under and True Blood, while focusing on other franchises.
