Before he was putting on those smashing blue tights and red cape and pretending to save the world, Henry Cavill was mesmerizing people with his luscious, wavy, flowing hair. The 32-year-old British Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star rocked quite a different look 12 years ago, and as seen in our throwback interview with him, it was quite distracting indeed. Cavill discussed the musical film Little Red Riding Hood with co-star Joey Fatone on the set in 2003. In the movie, which was released straight to DVD in the United States in 2006, Cavill played the Hunter while the 'N Sync alum portrayed the Big Bad Wolf. Cavill also rocked long locks in the 2006 movie Tristan +...

What, who, why or even how did your fascination with Horror begin? I will give you a minute to think whilst I set the scene. The other day, I was driving my car to work; A journey that has been done a thousand times before and as a result, it has become so tedious; so pathetically boring; I could probably do it with my eyes closed and without thinking (not that I will of course, that would just be plain dangerous on so many levels); But my point is, whilst I was driving, a question, not just any old question, but that question popped and buried itself deep into the back of my head. A simple question of What made me interested in Horror? Had evolved and mutated like a diseased zombie into further questioning and so forth, that in the end, a whole...

Today in 2002, the first Broadway revival of Into the Woods opened at the Broadhurst Theatre, where it ran for 279 performances. Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical Joanna Gleason, in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm.

Walt Disney Home Entertainment takes us on a dark and dazzling journey Into the Woods with this mashup of the many fairy tales they’ve so colorfully brought to the screen in animation form before. If you can imagine Once Upon a Time loaded with never-ending musical numbers you have a good idea what to expect from this impressive film. Besides a few spots where you know you’re on a movie set, audiences will no doubt get lost in the land of make-believe Director Rob Marshall transports you to.
In Into the Woods, a baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) are childless as the result of the curse of a once-beautiful witch (Meryl Streep). Three days before the rise of a blue moon, they venture into the forest to find the ingredients that will reverse the spell and restore the witch's beauty: a milk-white cow, hair as yellow as corn,...

Into the Woods opened on Broadway in 1987, with the music and lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim and the book by James Lapine. It is Sondheim’s most performed musical and one of his best known works. The story combines familiar characters from childhood fairy tales such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and the ubiquitous Witch, and explores their journeys to get their wish, as well as the negative consequences of the small dishonesties committed by each character to get what they want. As the witch sings, “Told a little lie/Stole a little gold/Broke a little vow/Did you?/Had to get your prince/Had to get your cow/Had to get your wish/Doesn’t matter how.” As the story unfolds, the traditional dichotomies of good and evil, and our expectations of each character, are shaken.

Rob Marshall has had plenty of success in the world of musical motion picture. His 2002 film adaptation of Chicago won Academy Awards and boosted Marshall’s name into the Hollywood “it crowd” in the process. Following up Chicago with a lovely adaptation of the Arthur Golden novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, showed Marshall was an accomplished director who was capable of more than musicals. Those two films showed style, heart and confidence. Chicago – Neither Hollywood nor purely Broadway, Disney’s big-screen adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Into the Woods” finds a charming home on Hollyway.
Even if you’re not a “musical kind of person,” I challenge you not to want to sing along to the catchy tunes or laugh at the intentionally overdramatic comedy.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Meryl Streep delivers yet another memorably kooky performance as the Witch while Johnny Depp is in his wheelhouse once again as Little Red Riding Hood’s Wolf on the way to grandma’s treehouse. Anna Kendrick also plays someone you’d expect: a runaway almost bride known as Cinderella who evolves from rags to riches and wants the prince but fears the royalty.
But the standouts are the 13-year-old Lilla Crawford – who has played “Annie” and “Billy Elliot” on Broadway – and a surprising Chris Pine. Pine is the only non-safe casting decision – where it feels...

After months of hype, Into the Woods, director Rob Marshall’s film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical, hits theaters on Christmas day.
Even though the film boasts an ensemble cast, most of the attention has been focused on everyone’s favorite actress, Meryl Streep, who plays a witch who inadvertently brings together many of Brothers Grimm’s beloved characters, including Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), and Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy).
While bewitching, Streep doesn’t run away with the film. Sure, she gets to sing some of the musical’s best numbers--and she did get one of the film’s two acting nominations at the 2015 Golden Globes--but there are at least seven other A-list stars who make use of their screen time.
And with so much buzz surrounding Streep, the film’s best moments are hers to lose. With that in mind, we rank the scene-stealing potential of the ensemble cast from...

Have you heard the one about the kid named Jack who has to sell his pet cow, only to trade it for some beans? How about the little girl in a red hooded shrug that's off to visit her grandmother? Or maybe the servant girl who sneaks out to a Prince's ball, or the girl with the impossibly long hair that people use to visit her atop a doorless tower?
They're all here in "Into the Woods," Stephen Sondheim's cheeky mash-up of childhood fables; he takes the tone from the likes of the Brothers Grimm and Aesop, and twists it like the gnarled trees that serve as the setting for much of the production.
So, it's a musical? I hate musicals.

I was both "excited and scared." These words, as sung by Little Red Riding Hood in the classic, Stephen Sondheim musical, echoed my sentiments as I walked into Disney's film adaptation of Into the Woods, a play I hold in very high regard and one of the seminal musicals that developed my love for the form. My cause for concern stemmed from director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine), whom, to this point, I don't believe has made a particularly good movie. Sitting down in the theater, my heart was pounding. Then, the fifteen-minute-long opening prologue started, and I began to settle. The show was in good hands, and the result is a successful entry into movie musical canon, even despite some issues. The film opens with a focus, primarily, on three separate fairy tales, two familiar to us all and one a new creation. First is Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) attending the king's festival,...

The second clip features the Baker and his wife exchanging the magic beans for Jack’s (Daniel Huttlestone) cow. Director: Rob Marshall; Screenwriters: James Lapine, Stephen Sondheim; Starring: Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp; Running time: 125 mins; Certificate: PG
If ever someone was guilty of not seeing the wood for the trees, it's Rob Marshall with this fairytale mash-up based on the Broadway musical. The Chicago director gets bogged down in a multi-strand narrative that unfolds in frustrating, circular motion as he tries to weave together several Brothers Grimm fairytales. Even the songs by Stephen Sondheim seem to blur into one.
Thank goodness for a constellation of stars who manage to rise above, particularly Meryl Streep whose wicked witch livens up many a scene. James Corden and Emily Blunt spark off each other well, too, as the humble baker and his wife who are childless thanks to one of the witch's spells and venture into the woods in an effort to break it.

A set of character posters arrived yesterday, so by the apparently iron-clad rules of film marketing, a fresh trailer must surely follow. Oh, look: a fresh trailer! Expect endings a little less happy than normal. James Corden is the Baker,...
