Summer is just starting and I’ve already found myself, multiple times, in natural bodies of fresh water that descended far deeper depths than I was prepared for. On one occasion, believing the riverbed to be no more than a few inches below my toes, I propelled myself down into the dark waters, stretching for the muddy bottom only to find it nowhere in reach, my lungs screaming for air. But need or air was not the only thing forcing me to the surface. The moment the riverbed was not right where I expected it, a familiar image came to my mind: that of a sea monster rapidly closing the distance between its sharp, protruding teeth and my fleshy toes. As I frantically kicked my way to the rocky shore, a slideshow of underwater monsters played in my mind, starting with the deep-lake horror movie The Quest (okay, it’s not really a horror film,...

It's very clear that Zack Snyder is in the driver's seat, in terms of defining the overarching story unfolding across the DC Extended Universe. But just how much control does he have over the standalone films? James Wan was asked this very question at this past weekend's WonderCon about his standalone Aquaman feature and gave an intriguing answer. Henry Cavill Excited About Justice League And Working With Jason Momoa's Aquaman "Well, I think the story that I would like to tell is still at the end of the day my story. And that’s what’s cool with Zack, is that he’s actually very respectful of that. He’s actually helping me out in some ways with certain things that he’s doing with his [films] so that I can have better groundwork with the standalone Aquaman story." James Wan Conjuring Up Sea Monsters For Aquaman Movie Wan's comments would seemingly indicate that,...

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice had a lot of problems, chief among them a self-serious, dreary tone that weighed the proceedings down like a sack of wet cement. And with that film getting dragged by critics more savagely than any superhero movie since Green Lantern, people are naturally starting to wonder whether that same aesthetic will be present in future titles in Warner Bros. and DC’s cinematic universe (an admittedly worrying thought).
Asked at WonderCon about the tone he’d be taking for Aquaman, director James Wan threw in his two cents, assuring IGN that he would be bringing a distinctive, slightly more lighthearted touch to the blockbuster.
“The kind of filmmaker that I am… even my darker horror films generally are still very fun and I think that’s important for me and the kind of films I make,” he explained. “Aquaman is a character that a...

Tale of Tales comes from director Matteo Garrone's who's Gomorrah and Reality were incredibly well received. From the goodwill following those films he's assembled a stellar cast to bring the early fairy tale work of Giambattista Basile to life.

While Matteo Garrone's "Tale Of Tales" made a starry debut on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival last spring, it didn't seem to bowl over critics. While we called it "engrossing and entertaining," we also noted it was more of an in-the-moment pleasure. Still, with this cast and what look to be some unforgettable visuals, the picture looks like one that's still worth tracking down. Read More: Cannes Review: Matteo Garrone's 'Tale Of Tales' With Salma Hayek, John C. Reilly, Vincent Cassel & More The latest from the director of "Gomorrah" is based on the 17th-century fairy stories of Giambattista Basile, with Salma Hayek, John C. Wise-cracking Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy slash away at reanimated corpses in a bloody reworking of Jane Austen. But it’s not as much fun as it sounds
Early in Pride and Prejudice Mr Darcy offers his opinion of Elizabeth Bennet to Mr Bingley: “She is tolerable.” Would that I could say the same about this stupid film. Representing the lowest form of mashup, Burr Steers’ ridiculous adaptation is, to be fair, a fascinating example of an idiotic culture gone horribly wrong.
I have not read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (the “Quirk Book classic”, as it is described in the credits) for two reasons. One, life is finite, and two, if I simply had to dig into Seth Grahame-Smith’s oeuvre, I’d choose Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. It has to be said that the first two-thirds of Steers’ film has stretches that aren’t too bad.

The love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy has been told again and again onscreen, and each adaptation has in its own way addressed themes of class, social etiquette and romance that Jane Austen wove into the 1813 classic, Pride and Prejudice. But now Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, in theaters Feb. 5, introduces a whole new slew of themes: the undead, for example, and martial arts and lots and lots of blood and gore. The film has Cinderella star Lily James playing Elizabeth, who in this version just happens to be leading a small army of sword-toting society women in...

It’s been slightly over a year since Gwen Stacy debuted as Spider-Woman in Edge Of Spider-verse #2. Peter Parker’s long dead girlfriend got a jolt of new life as the superhero savior of Earth-65. Almost overnight, “Spider-Gwen” exploded into a pop culture phenomenon not seen since Harley Quinn was created for “Batman: The Animated Series.” Within months, Spider-Gwen cosplay was popping up everywhere and she was given her own on-going series. Since its debut in February 2015, Spider-gwen has consistently been in the Top 20 comic book sales. Her popularity is so high, Spider-Gwen even got her own variant cover month back in June. Now Vulture has dared to wonder what the onscreen Spider-Verse would look like if Emma Stone donned Gwen’s pink and white suit to save the city. The only thing that would’ve made it better? As long as Hollywood exists, storytellers looking for a fresh twist will be combing the land in search of plot elements they can pluck out and shake vigorously until they compliantly fall into another genre. Homer did it. Shakespeare did it. Even the Bible did it. So it should come as no surprise to see Hollywood wants to adapt Louisa May Alcott’s novel “Little Women.” Deadline got the details on what The CW has planned. “Little Women” is described as a hyper-stylized, gritty adaptation of the 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott, in which disparate half-sisters Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy band together in order to survive the dystopic streets of Philadelphia and unravel a conspiracy that stretches far beyond anything they have ever imagined – all while trying not to kill each other in the process. At first blush, this seems like the natural evolution of parody mash-up craze that...

Scooby-Doo surprisingly continues to impress, and while further releases stick to the formula, the last few years have seen the gang expand their horizons, and add levels of complexity to their routine. Plus, they play along with the changing times.
Scooby-Doo 13 Spooky Tales: Surf’s Up Scooby-Doo! unfortunately only has one new adventure, but it is a solid collection of old and new. The latest adventure has the gang battling a water monster at a beach resort, and Fred battling a compulsion for nets. But, the collection, all of the episodes having a beach/water/surf theme, isn’t just a new episode with a few throwbacks to reminisce over, it’s a kind of primer on the series spanning decades.
Once you get past the first episode, the new one, you jump straight to “A Clue for Scooby-Doo,” the second ever episode of the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?...

Cannes - If any critics were about to ding Mike Leigh for wading into the warm waters of the period prestige picture for his latest, long-contemplated feature, let it be known that the veteran writer-director has come prepared. "What is wrong with being a portrait painter?" asks a slighted practitioner of the form at an ego-crammed artists' gathering midway through "Mr. Turner," Leigh's expansive, exquisitely realized biography of Britain's foremost Romantic painter. The retort from a colleague is airy and sneery and entirely predictable: "What does it do to elevate the art?" he smugs. You might ask the same question, and receive the same answer, about the biopic genre -- routinely dismissed by highbrow critics as an easy-access route to bland, Oscar-gilded gravitas, subverted only by a few filmmakers resourceful enough to bend the form's rigid structure and insert something of themselves between the factual lines. Leigh earned his stripes...

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies set off a wave of classical literary fiction mixed with modern ironic horror elements. In the wake of its success, we saw instantly forgettable books like Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, Android Karenina and this one I just made up, War and Peace and Please Stop Churning Out These Regrettable Books Already. While the novel’s author, Seth Grahame-Smith, got to enjoy his first big-screen flop with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the book that kick-started his career has been stuck in development limbo for quite some time. Two arthouse film-makers took to the raging seas with fishermen from the New England town where Moby-Dick was set – and returned with a shocking record of a savage industry
Leviathan is an extraordinary collision of genres: an art film made by a pair of British and French anthropologists that works as a stupendous cinematic spectacle. Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel – founders of Harvard's radically interdisciplinary Sensory Ethnography Lab – set out to make a film based in New Bedford, the "whaling city" of New England and the historic background for Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby-Dick. But they then became increasingly fascinated by the city's contemporary status as a fishing port.

Sea monsters are cropping up everywhere, and even the dead ones are seriously creeping us out. Like this weird discovery made on a beach near the Spanish town of Villaricos – a creature which looks like either an albino dragon or some kind of Mediterranean cousin to the Loch Ness Monster. The first report came down from the Spanish site Ideal, and Boingboing passed along the story as recounted by local officials. The translation is a little wonky, but they basically describe a nasty-smelling, partially decomposed carcass measuring around 13 feet long. As of this writing, experts have not yet come forward to explain the origin and species of the bizarre creature, which seems to have some dangerous-looking spines along its... neck? Or is that a tail?...

New York -- On and off screen, it's been a bruising summer for Hollywood.
Every weekend, the multiplex has been under siege like it has rarely been before. One after another, they have come: Big-budget, globe-trotting blockbusters backed, like goliaths with air support, by marketing budgets in the hundreds of millions.
As the studios have focused increasingly on the fortunes of monster-sized "tentpoles," as they're known in the trade, weekend real-estate in the summer months has become precious, fraught territory. In the season's packed schedule, there's little breathing room for the blockbusters: They need to open big, right away.
Some of these films have succeeded. Some have flopped. But more than most summers, the content of this year's seasonal crop of spectacles has felt like a pummeling, leaving both moviegoers and some in the industry dazed from the onslaught.
Zombies swarmed over much of the planet in "World War Z.

Not that we are actually new to Netflix, we're just happy, able, willing to help you find out what kind of 'Twitch-y' material is coming to the big red virtual envelope in the streaming-room. Hopefully we are hitting our groove here, with varied mix of stuff streaming around the world: A weary Bob Hoskins vs. creepy Christopher Lloyd over control of public transit in L.A., Mary Elizabeth Winstead trying to kick her drinking habit, history and passion in World War II era Shanghai, 9/11 Allegorical SciFi and rumours of Norwegian Sea Monsters. ...

Guillermo Del Toro‘s much anticipated “Pacific Rim” previewed a handful of edited scenes this past weekend, and we were there to sample what was on offer. There are no real spoilers contained here, as Del Toro was kind enough to edit these scenes so even us journalists attending weren’t hugely spoiled by his epic sci-fi [...]

A second trailer for Empires of the Deep has arrived, and let's just say it's just as... well... special as the first one was. Sea monsters and Olga Kurylenko? We can't go wrong with that formula, can we?
Empires of the Deep’s deeply troubled production began several years ago. The gist of it is that a very wealthy Chinese real estate tycoon wrote a script for an epic underwater sci-fi fantasy adventure flick and set about to co-finance the film. Monica Bellucci was announced to star in it. Catwoman director Pitof was hired to direct it. The late Empire Strikes Back director Irvin Kershner was brought aboard to produce it. All three very quickly bailed on the project. That was in 2009. Jonathan Laurence was then brought in to direct, and when he abruptly departed the project, he wasn’t quiet about his disdain for how bad the production was...

“Harry Potter” star Tom Felton is shedding his Hogwarts robes -- and his British accent -- for his next role, as an American Navy pilot in the upcoming World War II drama “Ghosts of the Pacific.” The actor, who portrayed Slytherin student and Harry Potter nemesis Draco Malfoy in the series, will get to play a hero this time, in the role of real-life bombardier Tony Pastula. Pastula was stranded in the South Pacific in 1942 alsongside pilot Harold Dixon and radioman Gene Aldrich after the trio abandoned their damaged scouting plane. They ended up adrift on a 4-foot-by-8-foot raft for 34 days with no food, water, or supplies. “I've always been attracted to true stories that showcase ordinary people in extraordinary situations,” said Joe Ricketts, the film's executive producer. “The men in ‘Ghosts of the Pacific' faced seemingly insurmountable odds and yet they never gave up. They were America's first heroes of the Pacific war.

< Nearly everyone involved in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief has moved on and grown up a bit-- Logan Lerman warring in last fall's The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Brandon T. Jackson to TV's Beverly Hills Cop TV series and Jake Abel to The Host just last weekend. But the gang's all back, with Nathan Fillion inexplicably added to the mix, for Percy Jackson and the Sea Monsters, whose first trailer just debuted at MTV. When I interviewed Abel about The Host last week it was interesting hearing him admit that the Percy Jackson series is pretty much exclusively for kids at this point, which might be tough for a twenty-something actor making his way in the world but also provides a pretty steady paycheck. And as evidenced by all the work these actors have gotten since Lightning Thief, it's definitely not hurting that they're most recognizable to elementary...

Here is another trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim for Qualcomm’s presentation at CES 2013. I will let a detailed synopsis take over here, I can’t do the robots justice otherwise.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary...

Prometheus may have momentarily squashed Guillermo del Toro’s H.P. Lovecraft ambitions, but the director’s not ready to give up on Cthulhu just yet.
The man behind Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy (and the woefully underrated Blade II) is about to release what could be one of the most Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots vs. Aliens flick ever made. Pacific Rim, which hits theaters in July 2013, is a movie about big-a– monsters, called Kaijus, that emerge from the ocean and wreak havoc on San Fran. Why yes, I am wearing a patchwork of Oven Mitts.
I don't know why, but this season of All Stars just hasn't clicked for me yet, but this week's challenge was interesting, and I'm pretty sure hasn't been done before. The designers must create wearable art using spray paint, but the end results end up less Banksy and more ... BankRUPTsy. Oh c'mon, that was brilliant
We saw some actual conflict in the workroom, as Laura seems to be working everyone's last nerve, and the fabulously gossipy Kayne tries to fan the flames. Other than that, it was business as usual, as this class is being far too kind to each other, and we've seen shockingly little of such polarizing past figures as Joshua.
"Androgynous Cigarette Girl" is the look of the future.
So how did each designer do? Let's take a look.

Althea - It looks like stepping stones, and that neckline is bizarre.

2:36 Pm: The walls in Hall H are literally moving for Warner Bros., as the curtains on the side slide back to reveal two additional screens showing off the 3D WB logo. Moderator Chris Hardwick promises that in addition to the announced projects we will see today, there are several surprises in store today. Congratulating those who waited in line all day to get inside the hall, Hardwick says screw those who didn’t.
2:37 Pm: The walls are alive! 3D images of computer files line the screens, with data, radar, and cryptic data encircling the stage. Legendary producer Thomas Tull gets a huge response merely mentioning Guillermo Del Toro’s name.
2:41 Pm: Guillermo del Toro takes the stage, as the crowd loses their shit (hopefully not literally, but considering the long line for the restrooms, it is fully possible). Del Toro says that Comic Con has...

In 2009 Seth Grahame-Smith had an idea for a literary and pop culture mash-up. Kind of like a prose version of the classic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercials ( ” You got chocolate in my peanut butter! ” You got peanut butter in my chocolate!” ). The result was the best seller ” Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” ( ” You got flesh-eaters in my Jane Austen!” ). Soon other authors followed with ” Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters “. But Grahame-Smith, for his next novel, embarked on another concoction: horror icons and historical figures. It would be revealed that a beloved former president shared more than a first name with Dr.Van Helsing, the nemesis of Count Dracula. Like the good doctor ( and cheerleader Buffy Summers ), honest Abe Lincoln was a vampire hunter. Soon fantasy film maven Tim Burton’s production company snapped up the movie rights and now Abraham Lincoln : Vampire Hunter has arrived in theatres everywhere.

Today our cinemas will be invaded with a curious concoction of dubious historical accuracy and fang-faced bloodshed as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter unveils itself to the world. But how far will this new parody culture go? Who else is being lined up against the wall of re-imaginiation? And just what the hell is a wall of re-imagination anyway? Let’s find out…
Earlier this year we had John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe taking on the mantle of a serial killer hunter in The Raven and this fictional historical (or fictorical if you will*) trend was given an unhealthy shot in the face when Seth Grahame-Smith injected Jane Austen’s much loved Pride and Prejudice with a zombie outbreak, throwing the Bennett household into a fury.
More crossovers followed. Sea Monsters found their way into Sense and Sensibility, Queen Victoria was reimagined as a Demon Hunter, Tolstoy got an upgrade...

Quirk Books editor Jason Rekulak developed an ingenious literary idea in 2009. Take a classic novel beloved by individuals around the world that all of them remember reading and/or avoiding reading in their sophomore year English classes. Make sure whatever novel you took is also in the public domain. Then mash up your chosen novel with an unexpected genre that has a particular appeal in western pop culture. That was his equation for the internet beloved and mainstream media liked Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and that title’s spiritual sequel Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. An adaptation of that equation also factored into Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ writer Seth Graham-Smith’s subsequent work, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. And another adaptation of that equation is the driving force behind Hank Green (who’s one half of the incredible Vlog Brothers) and Bernie Su's (who’ behind the Streamy Award-winning original web series,...

Not too long ago I was in communiqué with an ex-Asylum director and joked about pitching them my idea for Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark. Yesterday The Asylum announced the third installment in their Mega Shark franchise... Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark. I think The Asylum might be tapping my phone, hacking my emails, or jacking directly into my brain.
Or it could just be that Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark is such a natural progression for this franchise that I’m hardly the only one to come up with such an obvious premise? Think about it.
The Mega Shark is kind of to The Asylum what Godzilla is to Toho. Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus was their Godzilla, King of the Monsters. Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus could be any one of a myriad of Godzilla vs. sequels. Mega Piranha is their Rodan. 2012: Moby Dick is their Mothra. Mega Python vs. Gatoroid...

Director Michael Bay is not a subtle man, as he’s proven with the science fiction movies he has helmed. Explosions are used where dialogue and better-than-normal exposition could be used better to move the story along. His quick editing and continued movement of the camera is, more or less, designed to appeal to people Adhd. Yet no where can you say anything of his films is actually grounded in any science. So why is the reboot version of The Teenage Mutant Turtles, which he’s producing, changing its origin concept of radiated turtles that become superheroes into space aliens who become superheroes? Bay recently spoke at Nickelodeon Upfront in New York where he announced that this live-action reboot will feature far more realistic, relatable ninja turtles. “When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie.

If you've perused the shelves of a bookstore lately, you've probably noticed one of the hottest literary trends going right now: mash-up novels. The first one to catch everyone's attention was Seth Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, establishing the pattern of taking a well-known author's classic work and stirring it together with some outlandish element. More have followed, expanding the trend from classic fiction to famous historical figures as well: Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The Eerie Adventures of the Lycanthrope Robinson Crusoe. The genre is rich with potential because it combines two things Hollywood does well: recreating historical periods and creating the fantastic. Except, well, first you have to actually get the movies made... So far the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie seems to be most skilled at chasing away directors, and it looks like that same problem has hit another...

This is a pretty big week for DVD releases with plenty of titles worth buying and renting as well as a couple worth skipping completely. There’s no real common thread here aside from almost half of titles featured below being TV shows on DVD. The best of the bunch include the second and third seasons, respectively, of Community and Parks & Recreation, but other TV releases include the classic seventies series Police Story, the trippy Sigmund & the Sea Monsters, the piss poor Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, and more. But there are some great releases for film fans too including Hanna and X-Men First Class. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Warner Bros. and Legendary pictures have hired Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, Green Zone, L.A. Confidential) to write the script for a fictional Revolutionary War set film called Here There Be Monsters, and Robert Zemeckis is currently in talks to direct.
The movie will center on Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones, but they will be adding sea monsters into the mix. Jones coined the phrase, "I have not yet begun to fight!" The idea spawned from the mind of Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull.
The film has got a very talented writer so at least we know the script will be good. It would be awesome to see Zemekis officially come on board the project, as long as he doesn't do the whole Motion Capture thing. The guy may have help start the motion capture technology revolution, but he just kept using it to make bad films.
