Like Mimi, I was a kid of 11 years old when I saw The Labyrinth. I used to watch Amahl and the Night Visitors every year at Christmas and found it interesting, though somewhat strange as I was not very familiar with opera. But The Labyrinth was a real revelation. I had become a real fan of Twilight Zone and Sci-Fi and horror films. I also enjoyed anything that had dreamlike, surrealistic qualities. As I recall, the television opera The Labyrinth aired on a Sunday afternoon when I saw it. I immediately recognized the name of Gian Carlo Menotti so I was enticed to watch. The strangeness of the story and imagery kept me entranced and has stayed with me ever since. I would really like to find this on DVD. Someone should consider redoing this for television or film. The opera has some great cinematic possibilities.
