Puss in Boots: The Last Wish star Harvey Guillén recently revealed that he wants to return as fan-favorite character Perrito in the long-rumored fifth Shrek movie.
Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote the physical media release of Disney's Wish, Guillén shared that he would "absolutely" return to the role, stating, "Oh, absolutely. 100%. I mean, I think we want to hear, I want to hear Perrito's origin story. When did that whole thing happen with the sock? I want to know a little bit of a backstory there and what happened, and how he got that scar on his tummy. I still don't know how he got that. If you look at the poster he's lifting up his sweater, he has a little scar on his tummy, and I was like, how did you get that?"

Transformers One is unlikely to repeat the box office success of its predecessor. The Transformers franchise has had mixed results at the box office over the years. The upcoming release of Transformers One will face tough competition from other major films in 2024.
Although one Transformers movie set a surprising box office record 10 years ago, it seems unlikely that 2024’s new installment Transformers One will repeat this success. The Transformers franchise has been around since the ‘80s, but its series of live-action blockbuster movies began in 2007 with the release of director Michael Bay’s Transformers. Although it came with a sizable $150 million budget, Transformers proved a big hit at the box office, earning $709 million upon release. However, Transformers wasn’t the year’s biggest success. The third Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Spider-Man 3, and Shrek the Third all out-earned Bay’s hit.

In 2002, audiences were captivated by the British horror film 28 Days Later by director Danny Boyle. Made on a budget of $8 million, the movie was a breakout global hit, grossing $85 million worldwide, and redefined the zombie genre for the 21st century. Five years later, a sequel was released, 28 Weeks Later, with Boyle producing and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. 28 Weeks Later ended on a major cliffhanger, hinting at a third film, which many started calling 28 Months Later. Now, almost 17 years after the release of the previous film, the third movie has finally been announced with a new name: 28 Years Later.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has everything you could ask for from an animated Oscar contender, including sterling reviews, stellar box office and a proven awards track record. There’s one potential hitch, though: it’s a sequel. In the history of Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, only two sequels have ever won, and they were both from the “Toy Story” franchise: “Toy Story 3” (2010) and “Toy Story 4” (2019). Can “Across the Spider-Verse” achieve the same rare feat?

DreamWorks is finally making Shrek 5 after a long wait, fulfilling the original plans for the franchise. The idea for Shrek 5 dates back to 2004, when it was initially intended to be the final installment. Shrek Forever After was changed during development to be the final movie, but now Shrek 5 can give the franchise a better sendoff.
DreamWorks is finally making Shrek 5, and the movie fulfills a 20-year plan for the animated franchise after an attempted retcon. The Shrek franchise began in 2001 with the original animated movie that introduced audiences to Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey. The series reached its assumed conclusion in 2010 with the release of Shrek Forever After, the fourth installment of the main franchise. While DreamWorks found ways to expand the franchise with the Puss in Boots films, the desire for Shrek 5 has not died down. Good news came in 2023 when Shrek 5 was confirmed to be in development.

It's easy to overlook just how big the "Shrek" movies are given that they are mostly a giant meme factory and a source for a controversial Scottish accent. This is a franchise that changed animation and showed DreamWorks Animation was a powerhouse that could compete with Disney and Pixar. It competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the first animated film in almost 50 years to do so. It won the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature and helped cement the rise of computer animation. There is a reason this is the first animated movie of the 21st century to be selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
Since then, "Shrek" has grown into a giant franchise, with spin-offs, musicals, and much more ... including a very popular themed rave and even custom Crocs. This is why it might be tough for casual movie watchers to keep track of which movies to watch,...

After years of teases, Shrek 5 is finally planned with the original cast returning, but reuniting the cast could be challenging. Director Francis Lawrence teased a sequel to Constantine in 2011 and work may begin after WGA strikes, but no release date has been confirmed. Paramount announced a true sequel to Cloverfield in 2018, but there is no confirmation of a release date yet, despite years of discussion.
While many movie sequels do eventually make it out of development hell, there are plenty that seem to be stuck in limbo despite years of constant teases and updates. A film sequel can be highly anticipated, especially if its original was extremely successful upon its initial release. Even when a sequel is in high demand, they don't always make it to the big screen, with various reasons accounting for their delays or failure to be greenlit by a studio.

Shrek was the first film in the franchise and won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Shrek's success positioned DreamWorks Animation as Pixar's main competition and spawned spinoffs and sequels. The Adventures of Puss in Boots serves as a prequel to the Shrek movies and remains one of DreamWorks' most successful streaming efforts.
Given the sheer amount of short films and spinoffs, figuring out how to watch the Shrek franchise in order can be surprisingly tough. For starters, viewers of the fairy-tale send-up can either watch the films, shorts, and series in release order or in a more narrative-driven, chronological order. Based on William Steig's picture book of the same name, the original 2001 Shrek kicked off the franchise in a memorable fashion, becoming the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature winner. Bolstered by its tongue-in-cheek humor and defining voice-over performances, Shrek was one of the year's best films — period.

The Shrek movie series saw the title ogre meet a variety of characters, of which some are now some of the most memorable ones in the whole franchise, even if some of them only appeared once. Back in 2001, DreamWorks brought the computer-animated fantasy movie Shrek, based on the 1990s children’s picture book of the same name by William Steig. With some changes to make it more family-friendly, Shrek ended up parodying fairy tales and their movie adaptations, particularly those by Disney, and it became a massive success thanks to its story and characters, which were unlike those of previous fairy tale movies.

It is easy to underestimate the impact the "Shrek" franchise has had on DreamWorks and the animation world at large. The first film saw a new era for DreamWorks Animation, putting the animation studio on the map as a serious competitor to Disney, redefining the American animated movie for years to come, all while earning a premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival before going on to winning the very first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Ever since the success of the first "Shrek," DreamWorks has become a powerhouse of animation, making not only a series of sequels and even spin-off movies, but several successful franchises after it — and some big flops too. Despicable Me has surpassed Shrek as the highest-grossing animated film franchise, earning over $4.6 billion worldwide, making it the most popular animated franchise. However, Shrek has the potential to reclaim its title with the release of Shrek 5, as there is a relatively small gap of $600 million between the franchises' box office grosses. The success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has increased anticipation for Shrek 5 and suggests that it could smoothly surpass Despicable Me's record, unless Despicable Me 4 generates significant hype.

Some filmmakers just have a special quality to them that isn't always easy to define, but sets them apart for the levels of nuance they're able to achieve with their art form. William Friedkin was a director who certainly fit this bill. He was the Academy Award-winning director of The French Connection but was probably best known for the horror classic The Exorcist (which also earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director the following year).
Update August 11, 2023: Following the passing of William Friedkin, this article has been updated with additional information about Bug in honor of the late great director.
The recently passed Friedkin had a long and impressive filmography that additionally included many critically acclaimed films and documentaries. It's been 13 years since Shrek last hit the big screen, but it looks as though we could soon be getting a fifth installment of the iconic franchise. Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, who is also a partner to Dreamworks Animation, told Variety back in April that he is looking to reboot Shrek with the original voice cast. Yes, that means Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy could be reuniting very soon.
"We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we've gotten is there's tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return," said Meledandri. While there are no firm deals in place just yet, negotiations are well underway. And it's no surprise that there is a keenness to reboot the lovable green ogre and his fairytale costars as there have been six films in the franchise: "Shrek" (2001), "Shrek 2" (2004), "Shrek the Third" (2007), "Shrek Forever After...

Even people who don't typically pay attention to box office numbers are surely aware that Warner Bros. and Mattel hit a home run with "Barbie." With Margot Robbie as the title character and Greta Gerwig in the director's chair, the film has been a smash hit thus far, breaking records while fending off the likes of "Oppenheimer" and "Haunted Mansion" to sit comfortably atop the charts all over the world. Now, the movie gets to count itself among the 100 biggest movies in history just shy of two full weeks into its theatrical run.
According to The Numbers, "Barbie" has now earned $804.3 million worldwide, including a massive $15.2 million on Tuesday. With that, Gerwig's blockbuster now enters the all-time top 100 at the box office, coming in at 97 just above "Jumanji: The Next Level" ($798.2 million). It will -- perhaps by the end of the sentence -- pass "Shrek the Third" ($807.3 million) to move up another spot.

Last Christmas, a little movie called Puss in Boots: The Last Wish surprised a lot of folks by grossing a mighty $185 million domestically. Its success was big enough that Dreamworks, whose animated films have lately underwhelmed at the box office, announced that they might be bringing back the Shrek series, which Puss was a spin-off from. Starting in 2001, the Shrek films, which followed Mike Myers’ lovable Ogre as he navigated a satirical fairytale kingdom with his faithful companions, Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy), were smash hits. The first Shrek, whose charmingly old-school CGI animation seems archaic now, made a might $266 million, and the sequel, Shrek 2, was even bigger, earning $441 million and doubling it’s gross worldwide.

Written and directed by Richard Linklater — one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed modern filmmakers — Dazed and Confused (1993) holds more name value than most films of its kind. Best classified as a comedy, it’s among the more famous instances of a “hangout movie” which, although isn’t a tightly defined genre, still boasts some well-known titles like Rio Bravo (1959), American Graffiti (1973), and Clerks (1994). But perhaps the best of the bunch is the film at hand.
Many filmmaking elements came into perfect fruition to create one of the best and most iconic movies of the nineties, regardless of region or director. Its cast performs brilliantly, putting several actors like Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Renée Zellweger, and Mila Jovovich on the Hollywood map. The script from Linklater works perfectly from the start, creating a tangible tone with proper pacing and whip-smart dialogue.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has swung into theatres with aplomb, matching (if not beating) the excitement and love that the first movie, “Into the Spider-Verse,” garnered in 2018.
“Across the Spider-Verse” follows on from that first movie with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) now a successful Spider-Man in his own universe. But another encounter with Hailee Steinfeld‘s Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman leads to Miles being launched into the Spider-Verse wherein he encounters a society of Spider-People, led by Oscar Isaac‘s Miguel O’Hara, and a new foe — Spot (Jason Schwartzman). The film ends on an outrageous cliffhanger, teasing the conclusion of the series with next year’s “Beyond the Spider-Verse.”
For now, however, fans will have to be satisfied with this excellent addition to the Spider-Man canon, which currently stands at an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site’s critical consensus reading: “Just as visually dazzling and action-packed as its predecessor,...

The sixth installment of the Shrek movie franchise was widely praised by critics as one of its best, so it’s worth finding out where to watch Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The Puss in Boots sequel sees the titular swashbuckling cat in a race against time to beat “Big” Jack Horner and Goldilocks and the Three Bears Crime Family to the mythical Last Wish to restore the first eight of his nine lives. With a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish received near-universal acclaim from critics. It was received just as warmly by audiences, grossing more than $480 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo).

Elon Musk has unveiled a new feature for subscribers of Twitter Blue: the ability to upload two-hour videos.
Right on queue, a verified user took advantage of the feature by uploading the movie Shrek 3 in full. The tweet currently sits atop the thread of replies to Musk’s initial tweet.
As Musk gutted most of Twitter’s staff, firing upwards of 8,000 employees, the social media platform has struggled to combat intellectual property infringement. The launch of Twitter Blue further exacerbated those issues, essentially giving users with a checkmark free rein to impersonate celebrities and other notable figures. With its latest feature, Twitter Blue subscribers can also upload full-length motion pictures without the fear of repercussion.
Musk himself frequently lifts memes and other content without attribution or credit, so he’s unlikely unbothered by the uptick in copyright infringement. He’s also too busy trafficking in conspiracy theories and anti-semitic tropes to probably notice.

Led Zeppelin made a fortune when they were an active band. How much did they earn? Enough for drummer John Bonham to pay $85,000 cash for a car just to spite the salesperson. The money didn’t stop flowing when the band broke up. A 2016 lawsuit highlighted how much Led Zeppelin earns from their music each year.

Several bands credibly accused Led Zeppelin ripping off songs during their career. They had to give songwriting credits to blues musicians they copied a few times. Once could say that DreamWorks Animation is the house that the Shrek franchise built. The sixth film from the animation giant, the original Shrek (2001) made waves in the animation world. It was praised as a brilliant satirical comedy that poked plenty of well-written fun at DreamWorks' arch-rival, Walt Disney Animation. The unique fairy tale world got even bigger in Shrek 2 (2004) - a flawless sequel that is just as good if not better than the film that preceded it. Shrek the Third (2007) is generally considered the weakest of the bunch, and while it has its moments, many found the plot to be quite less engaging than the previous two films. Thankfully the saga ended on a decent note with the time-bending Shrek Forever After (2010), but the marketing campaign declaring the fourth film as "the final chapter" seemed to indicate that this would be the last time we would see our beloved ogre.

Seth Rogen Doesn’t Know If He’s Coming Back for ‘Kung Fu Panda 4:’ ‘I Honestly Have No Idea’ (Video)
Seth Rogen, who currently stars in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” has voiced many animated characters – everything from Bob in “Monsters vs. Aliens” to Pumbaa in the reimagined version of “The Lion King.” He even had a brief voice role in “Shrek the Third,” which was released the same year as his breakout film “Knocked Up” back in 2007. And while talking to Rogen about his role in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as Donkey Kong, we had to ask about a couple of other animated projects in the works, including “Kung Fu Panda 4,” which he isn’t entirely sure about. You can watch the video above.
“I don’t know. I honestly have no idea,” Rogen said, when asked about whether or not he’s returning for the fourth “Kung Fu Panda” film, out next year. “I genuinely don’t know. I haven’t done it yet. Those are pretty low lifts for me.

The voice of Prince Charming in Shrek 2 is provided by one of Britain’s most acclaimed actors. Released in 2004, Shrek 2 was one of the best-received sequels ever made, with universal critical acclaim to match its predecessor and even more success at the box office. The Shrek sequel also continued to subvert the expectations of fairy tale traditions: after Prince Charming embarked on a daring quest to free the princess from the tower, he was shocked to learn she’d already been rescued by and married her savior – an ogre. Whereas Prince Charming is typically depicted as a hero, he's one of the villains of the Shrek franchise.

Creed III has now outgrossed all but one of the previous films in its franchise. In addition to being the third film in the Creed trilogy, the Michael B. Jordan directorial outing is a spinoff of the Rocky franchise, which began with the Best Picture-winning original in 1976. When Creed III, which pits Jordan's Adonis Creed against a new competitor played by Jonathan Majors, opened on March 3, it not only grossed the highest opening weekend of the franchise, but of the entire sports film genre.
Per Collider, the film's record-breaking box office gross has only been getting more impressive in the three weeks since the Creed III premiere. Worldwide, the film's gross has now surpassed $200 million after crossing the $100 million milestone in a single week. This makes it the second highest-grossing film in the entire nine-part franchise, falling just behind 2018's Creed II and its total of $214.2 million.

Celebrities have a long history of bringing their siblings, parents, and loved ones as their dates to red carpet events. On March 14, Michael Gandolfini, 23, kept the tradition alive when he brought his mom, Marcy Wudarski, as his plus one to the Los Angeles premiere of his new AppleTV+ series, "Extrapolations," costarring Meryl Streep, Kit Harington, and Tobey Maguire. Ahead of the premiere, Gandolfini and Wudarski expertly posed for the cameras to the surprise of no one as the mother-son duo has been walking red carpets together for over a decade.

Eddie Murphy shares that he is open to the possibility of Shrek 5 and a Donkey spinoff movie. Murphy has been the voice of Donkey ever since the first Shrek released in 2001. He continued to voice the character in the sequels Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After. Since the last film in the franchise, there have been rumors of a potential Shrek 5 being made as well. Though little has come of it, the recent success of the spinoff movie Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has sparked new life into the franchise and opened the door for more installments.
While promoting his newest movie You People, Murphy shares in an interview with Etalk that he would love to be part of Shrek 5 and to get his own Donkey spinoff movie.
Murphy makes it clear that he would be excited to join Shrek 5 if he was asked by DreamWorks Animation.

Eddie Murphy is more than ready to reprise Donkey in a fifth “Shrek” movie or a Donkey-centric spinoff. So far, only Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots has gotten the “Shrek” spinoff treatment with 2011’s “Puss in Boots” and 2022’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” According to Murphy, Donkey is far funnier and more worthy of the spinoff treatment than Puss.
“I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another ‘Shrek,’ I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey,” Murphy told ETalk in a recent interview. “You know, they did ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”
Murphy continued, “I would do a Donkey movie. I would do another ‘Shrek’ in two seconds.”

Eddie Murphy is ready to make waffles once again, as he has expressed interest in reprising his role as Donkey in the Shrek franchise.
Eddie Murphy discussed bringing back Donkey to Etalk, saying, “I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey.” And why not? After all, as Murphy points out, they have continued the franchise via the character of Puss in Boots…although Murphy thinks the series should have focused on his beloved ass. “You know, they did Puss in Boots movies. But it’s not entirely up to Eddie Murphy, who says the ball is in Dreamworks’ court if they want to get Donkey and Shrek back together.

This story about “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” first appeared in the Awards Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is, ostensibly, part of the “Shrek” universe. It’s a sequel to 2011’s “Puss in Boots,” which itself was a spin-off of a character who was first introduced in “Shrek 2” and subsequently appeared in “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After.” And as such, there’s a certain vibe you expect from the film.
But the movie handily discards that expectation early on, when Puss (voiced once again by Antonio Banderas) finds himself in a bar. He’s just learned that of his nine lives, he’s used all but one, and so he’s facing down his own mortality. The mood is desperate, funereal. And then a giant evil wolf (Wagner Moura), a bounty hunter later revealed to be the personification of Death,...

Chicago – The Shrek franchise, which had been showing signs of creative exhaustion dating all the way back to “Shrek The Third,” gets an unexpected dose of new life with this belated – and better than it has any right to be – sequel “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish,” focusing on the swashbuckling feline (voice of Antonio Banderas).
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The cat is basically Zorro with fur, and it’s perfectly suited to Banderas’ Latin purr. This film finds the adventurer unexpectedly down to his last life after wasting eight of his nine lives on exploits both heroic, and stupid. He’s haunted by the Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura) a whistling bounty hunter who is the embodiment of death, and settles down to a tamed life in the care of the cat lady in fairy land. While there, Puss in Boots grows a beard and trudges through his days drowning his sorrows in leche,...

Puss in Boots 2 opened in theaters to largely positive reviews, and the movie's ending sets up one key change for Shrek 5 that could fix the franchise. Started in 2001, the Shrek franchise faced immense success in the early 2000s and onward, spawning memes and fan edits aplenty. The first film was popular enough that studios decided to pump out three more sequels, and got a spinoff movie series based on the Shrek 2 character Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas). While the Shrek franchise had a good headstart, by the time Shrek 3 rolled around, there were noticeable differences in the quality that audiences couldn't put a finger on.
While the last Shrek movie (Shrek Forever After) released in 2010, Puss in Boots was hot on its heels, receiving a theatrical release in 2011 when Shrek 4 went straight to home video. Despite Puss in Boots receiving middling reviews, studios decided to revisit the...

"My Father's Dragon" is a 2022 animated feature that feels like a classic. Between the charming hand-drawn aesthetic, the imaginative setting, and the myth-like narrative structure, it has that rare quality of being truly timeless; this is a film that could have come out forty years ago, and will feel as relevant generations from now as it does today.
And I worry that no-one else will like it.
Directed by Irish animator and director Nora Twomey ("The Breadwinner"), "My Father's Dragon" tells the story of a boy who finds himself on an unexpected adventure. When he and his mother lose their shop and fall on hard times, Elmer (Jacob Tremblay) runs away from home, vowing to raise the money to reopen the family business. Elmer has a knack for finding things and prides himself on being a fixer, which only makes it harder for him to accept that some problems in life don't have answers.
