In 1969, George Harrison temporarily left The Beatles. He had long been growing discontent with his role in the band and he finally decided he’d had enough. He eventually returned to the group, but his bandmates didn’t seem too concerned about the fact that he’d quit. When Harrison walked out, they began jamming together.
The Beatles began jamming when George Harrison quit the band
While The Beatles were recording Let It Be, George Harrison decided he’d had enough of the band.
“It was a very, very difficult, stressful time, and being filmed having a row was terrible,” he said in The Beatles Anthology. “I got up and I thought, ‘I’m not doing this anymore. I’m out of here.’ So I got my guitar and went home and that afternoon wrote ‘Wah Wah.’”
According to Ringo Starr, the rest of the band didn’t even realize Harrison had left.

One song from George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass came out of the awkward filming of Let It Be. All Things Must Pass was filled with leftover songs from his Beatles days. The album was huge.
One of the songs from George Harrison‘s All Things Must Pass was inspired by Yoko Ono screaming while filming the documentary Let It Be. George explained how the headache Yoko gave him influenced some of his lyrics. In addition, George revealed why the Let It Be era was strange for him.

By the late 1960s, George Harrison was ready to leave The Beatles and go off alone. Not only did he feel creatively stifled by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, but he was also fed up with the band’s business side. He wrote a few songs to air out his grievances, and one song he referred to as a ‘piss-take.’

“Only a Northern Song” is a Beatles track written by George Harrison that debuted on 1969’s Yellow Submarine soundtrack. The lyrics consist of Harrison sharing his discontent with The Beatles’ publishing company as he says none of the chords he’s playing or lyrics he’s singing matter since it’s “only a Northern song.”

When The Beatles broke up in 1970, each member wasted no time jumpstarting their solo careers. George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon released solo work in the same year. Some had more success than others, but it proved that each member could work without being part of The Beatles. Here is a ranking of the first solo albums released by each member.
4. ‘Sentimental Journey’ – Ringo Starr The Beatles | Jan Olofsson/Redferns
Surprisingly, Ringo Starr was the first Beatle to drop a solo album, released a few weeks before The Beatles officially announced they were breaking up. Sentimental Journey is a collection of covers performed by Starr and produced by George Martin. While many of the covers are nicely done, many Beatles fans were confused about Starr emerging with an album that stuck closer to the popular music formula.

George Harrison was frustrated with The Beatles for several reasons. He often felt restricted by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, who primarily handled songwriting duties. He was also annoyed by the band’s business and legal aspects, especially in dealings with Apple Records. To air out his grievances, George Harrison wrote a few songs with lyrics hinting at his annoyances.

“I, Me, Mine” is from The Beatles’ 1970 album Let it Be and is the final song The Beatles recorded together. George Harrison wrote the song after an LSD trip when he realized how little material things matter. He became frustrated with his ego, and the recording itself is indicative of Harrison’s frustrations, as John Lennon didn’t record it after showing little interest.

There are tons of songs with George Harrison‘s best slide guitar work. The former Beatle adopted the style in the late 1960s after he realized he needed to freshen up his sound after playing the sitar for so long. He’d lost touch with his guitar. Thankfully, he started playing slide. Here are 10 of his best slide songs.
George Harrison | Bettmann/Getty Images 10. ‘My Sweet Lord’
George’s triple album All Things Must Pass has some of his best slide guitar work, especially on “My Sweet Lord.” The song would be nothing without the slide that plays a beautiful melody. It blends into the chorus of “Hallelujah” and “Hare Krishna” perfectly. By 1970 George hadn’t been playing slide for very long, but he embraced it wholeheartedly on this tune.
9. ‘Wah-Wah’
“Wah- Wah” is a jumble of sounds, but you can make out George’s perfect slide work throughout the song.

There are a couple of great songs from The Beatles‘ solo careers with appearances by other Beatles. The Fab Four might’ve gone their separate ways in 1970, but that didn’t mean they were through working together in some way. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr just never appeared on anything together. Here are the top five Beatles solo songs that have appearances by other Beatles.

While George contributed slide guitar to John’s Imagine tracks “Gimme Some Truth” and “I Don’t Want To Be A Soldier,” electric guitar on “Oh My Love,” and dobro to “Crippled Inside,” his work on “How Do You Sleep?” is the most important and memorable.

While The Beatles didn’t split until 1970, George Harrison already had ideas for his triple album, All Things Must Pass. He knew he wanted to go forward with his solo career, and Paul McCartney said he had an “affectionate” description for the album that sounded crude but could be considered an accurate metaphor.

Toward the end of The Beatles, George Harrison grew more frustrated with his creative restrictions. His music often took a backseat to John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s, and he believed McCartney had too much control. Paul’s stubbornness appeared during the “Hey Jude” recording session, further frustrating George Harrison.

The Beatles ended in 1970 as each member went in different ways musically. George Harrison might have been the most relieved to no longer be in the band as he had felt restricted in The Beatles. He wanted to bring unique sounds to the band but was often stifled by McCartney. In a 1979 interview with Rolling Stone, Harrison called McCartney “pushy” and said it wouldn’t be a good idea for them to be in another band together.

George Harrison was the youngest member of The Beatles and was dubbed the quiet one. Though a bit of a misnomer (Tom Petty said he wouldn’t shut up), George often let his music do the talking. He came into his own as a songwriter with the Fab Four and continued the trend in his solo career. Here are 10 essential George Harrison songs to listen to on his Feb. 25 birthday (presented in no particular order).

George wrote the lead song from perhaps the best Beatles album with hardly any help. John Lennon refused to help George write “Taxman,” and that might have been a good thing.
The barbed guitar line, simple yet infectious melodies, and memorable lyrics culminated in his peak Beatles moment to that point. It’s not difficult to conceive George receiving a confidence boost knowing he penned a stellar song without any assistance.

While George Harrison wrote several classic Beatles songs, most of their biggest hits were written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. The Lennon-McCartney duo is credited with hundreds of Beatles songs, even if there is contention over who deserved more credit. According to McCartney, this was part of the plan as he wanted him and Lennon to handle most of the songwriting.

George Harrison was the youngest Beatles member, performing with Paul McCartney and John Lennon at only 14 years old. During a self-interview, this guitarist commented on his role in the rock band — and why his age didn’t make “the slightest difference.”

The Beatles are the behind “Love Me Do,” “Here Comes the Sun,” and “Strawberry Fields Forever.” They first started writing and performing music as teenagers, with guitarist and songwriter Harrison as the youngest band member.
Harrison was only 14 years old when he started performing with the then-Quarrymen. According to Biography, it was McCartney that pushed for Harrison to join the band, despite the guitarist’s age. Eventually, the band changed their name to the Beatles, swapping their drummer for Ringo Starr.

George Harrison was all of 27 years old when he started making what became All Things Must Pass, in May 1970. The Beatles, the band to which he had dedicated his musical life since he was 15, were over, and Harrison spent the summer and fall in the studio, hammering out songs he had been sitting on and building new ones. He assembled an all-star cast of peers, from pal Eric Clapton and future Domino Bobby Whitlock to semi-Beatles Klaus Voormann and Billy Preston to actual Beatles Ringo Starr and John Lennon and a dozen more.

As Klaus Voormann recalls, the bass player, artist, and friend of the Beatles had no idea what was about to hit him when he arrived at Emi Studios (later known as Abbey Road) one day in late May of 1970. All he knew was that George Harrison was about to start a new project and that Ringo Starr would be drumming. Before he realized it, Voormann was rehearsing a bunch of unheard Harrison songs — one after another, 15 in all, including “What Is Life,” “Awaiting on You All,” and “My Sweet Lord.

When George Harrison went into the studio in 1970 to make All Things Must Pass, he was a man on a mission. He’d spent years waiting for this moment. George had so many songs saved up from his years in the Beatles, when he was limited to two or three songs per album. By now, he was sitting on a massive stash of material he was burning to share with the world. So he made sure nobody could ignore his definitive solo statement—the massive triple-vinyl classic All Things Must Pass.

Richard E. Grant is so memorable in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” that it’s a shock to realize he’s only in a fraction of the film.
Fox Searchlight’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”centers on biographer Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) when she is broke and desperate, and begins forging celebrity letters. Israel has encounters with multiple characters, but it’s the love-hate relationship with friend and accomplice Jack Hock (Grant) that audiences remember, even though he only enters one-third into the film.
To begin research, Grant read Israel’s 2008 memoirs. “It was her voice, in all its scabrous wit, but she was very scant on detail about Jack Hock. It’s a real achievement that [scriptwriters] Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty were able to extrapolate those few hints or suggestions and create a full character.”
He also credits the “brilliant” costume designer Arjun Bhasin. “The film starts in...

Diverse, awe-inspiring and memorable treasures that have sadly fallen off the radar
The noughties were a tough decade for film music fans. Not only was there the unprecedented loss of four great masters in the form of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Michael Kamen and Basil Poledouris; the nature of the industry itself began to go through some seismic changes, not all of them for the better.
With the art of film scoring becoming ever more processed, driven increasingly by ghost writers, electronic augmentation and temp tracks, prospects looked bleak. However, this shouldn’t shield the fact that there were some blindingly brilliant scores composed during this period. Here’s but a small sampling of them.

'I'd bring back to life all the hair that's gone down the plughole over 53 years'
Richard E Grant was born in Swaziland in 1957. After attending Cape Town University, he founded the radical Troupe Theatre Company. In 1982, he moved to London and five years later made his film debut in Withnail And I. In 2005, he wrote and directed Wah-Wah, a movie based on his childhood in Africa. He recently appeared in the BBC drama The Crimson Petal And The White. Forthcoming films include Horrid Henry: The Movie, and The Iron Lady, in which he plays Michael Heseltine. Grant is married to the voice coach Joan Washington and has a daughter and a stepson.
When were you happiest?
When I cracked how to do the Eiffel Tower with my yo-yo in 1968.
Which living person do you most admire, and why?
Joan Washington.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Doubt.

Can the actor ever leave the debauched Withnail behind? Here he tries his hardest with tales of fatherhood, carpentry and being Michael Heseltine
Richard E Grant is used to being a slight disappointment. Since 1985 he's carried the burden of playing the character with whom he's since become synonymous, Withnail, the reprobate, unemployed actor from writer/director Bruce Robinson's generation-defining Withnail and I. Deranged, delusional and dangerous to know, Withnail became an anti-hero for the angry youth of Thatcher's reign. Despite the intervening decades, the impact of his brilliant characterisation is such that you still expect him to come staggering in, bottle of vodka in hand, frock coat flapping and an air of icy malice sending a chill wind round the room.
So it's a bit of a let-down when the lithe, fresh-faced Grant enters the low-key trattoria off Portobello Road that he's chosen for our lunch date. He's anything...

Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Dr. Henry Philip "Hank" McCoy (aka Beast) in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. It had been previously reported that Benjamin Walker (star of the Public Theater’s “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”) had been cast in the role. Then last week we heard that the studio was worried about Walker's age. You see, Walker is only a few years younger than James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, who are supposed to be his elders in the film. Fox decided to find a younger actor to play Beast. Hoult is 20 years old (turning 21 later this year). McAvoy is 31, while Fassbender is 33. Deadline is reporting that Hoult had a part in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, which has in fact been delayed, giving him the time to film X-Men. Nicholas has appeared in About a Boy, Wah-Wah, The Weather Man, A Single Man, Clash of...

A Single Man, The Weinstein Company's Oscar bet this year, is a fascinating study of characters. Based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood, it depicts one day in the life of George, a middle-aged gay Englishman who works as a college professor in Los Angeles and whose lover, Jim, has recently died. - - -
- - - Playing Kenny, "a pretty-boy college student who appears to be stalking George (Colin Firth)", is Nicholas Hoult. During its La Press day, tMF was able to secure a phone interview with the young British actor. It must have been a tiresome day for Nicholas Hoult, but I never noticed, even once, any indication. Hoult was quite charming, seriously answered all my questions and even volunteered to add a few tidbits or two. What's so interesting is that he's very courteous, unlike some of the young actors based in Hollywood.

Scott Hicks: One Of The Boys
By
Alex Simon
Scott Hicks made his bones as a filmmaker the old-fashioned way, paying his dues as a crew member during the Australian film industry’s birth in the 1970s. Born in Uganda March 4, 1953, and raised in Kenya, England and finally Australia, Hicks worked his way up to assistant director for soon-to-be big names such as Peter Weir and Bruce Beresford before moving into directing industrial films and documentaries for television. Hicks didn’t direct his first feature, Freedom, until 1982, and had to wait for his second, in 1996, to put him on the A-list. Shine was the true story of Australian piano prodigy David Helfgott, and his battle with mental illness. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won a Best Actor statuette for Geoffrey Rush, who played Helfgott as an adult.

Actor Richard E. Grant has dismissed the idea of making a documentary about his native Swaziland, insisting it would be inappropriate because he was born in "colonial times".
The Gosford Park star, 51, was born in Mbabane, the capital of the small African country, when it was still protected by international law by Britain.
And while Grant makes reference to his upbringing in the semi-autobiographical 2005 film Wah-Wah, he insists it is not his duty to preach about Africa's problems.
He says, "No, definitely not. If I was a black Swazi, then I would, but as a white Swazi, no.
"I was brought up in colonial times and I wouldn't feel qualified. I go back there all the time, but I haven't lived there for 30 years."
Swaziland was granted independence in 1968.

Now 14, Ralph returns home to discover that his father has re-married an American ex-Air hostess called Ruby whom he has known all of six weeks.
