Rodney Rothman is a spectacularly funny guy, and yet I'd wager that many of the audiences who have laughed their faces off at a joke he wrote have never heard his name. That will most likely change after the opening of what Universal is calling Untitled Zach Galifianakis/Bill Hader/Seth Rogen R-Rated Comedy, which Rothman is directing from his own original script. I've known Rothman for a while now. We first met on Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and right after that, I tracked down his book, Early Bird: A Memoir Of Premature Retirement. He was a writer for Late Night With David Letterman when he was 21 years old, and at 24, he was promoted to head writer. That's the job he left before writing Early Bird, but he didn't stay unemployed for long. He wrote some episodes of Undeclared and Committed. He tried to get an Early Bird TV show off the ground.

Jennifer Finnigan anticipates still starting many work weeks on Monday mornings, even if she no longer does it on the show by that name.
The actress has moved on to other projects, including Saturday's (Aug. 17) new Lifetime movie "Baby Sellers," which casts her as an investigator probing a questionable adoption-agency operator (Kirstie Alley). Still, Finnigan laments the end of TNT's "Monday Mornings," the recent medical drama in which she starred with such notables as Alfred Molina and Ving Rhames.
"The ratings were a disappointment," she admits to Zap2it, "but they were building each week, and our audience was extremely loyal. I just think it had so much potential. Cable networks have a history of giving shows with a pedigree a shot, so it surprised me a bit."
Indeed, "Monday Mornings" had pedigree: Its executive producers were Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the CNN senior medical correspondent on whose novel the show was based,...

Having dabbled in (dark) drama on Dexter, Josh Cooke is returning to his sitcom roots, as one of the Brothers-in-Law in a pilot for TV Land, TVLine has learned exclusively.

After months of hype and headlines, Simon Cowell’s "X Factor" is finally debuting in America next week. The question is: Will anyone care?
In the past year, our DVRs have been filled to the max with reality singing competitions, from the revamped (J. Lo on a kinder, gentler "American Idol") to the remixed ("The Voice" has swivel chairs, you guys) to the reviled (ugh, "Karaoke Battle USA"). These days, the casual TV viewer needs a doctorate in “Reality TV” to keep track of all the various karaoke contests.
So, as a public service to fellow confused and overwhelmed TV addicts, I’ve broken down all the shows that are sure to feature overwrought renditions of Alicia Keys' songs and judges sipping from sponsored soda cups. (Example: "Idol" is Coke, "X Factor" is Pepsi. "The Sing Off" is…Coke 2?)
Practice your scales, warm up your pipes and dig in!

Screen Gems planned sequel to the [Rec] remake Quarantine is currently filming in L.A under the auspices of John Pogue – who previously wrote U.S. Marshals (the sequel to The Fugitive) and all three films in The Skulls series for Universal.
News has been pretty quiet on Quarantine 2 since Pogue was announced as director back in March, however according to Bloody Disgusting, Sony Screen Gems have cast Mercedes Masohn (Red Sands) and Josh Cooke (TV’s Committed, Bachelor Party 2) in the film, which has been announced as a direct-to-dvd release
Quarantine 2 is reportedly Very different from [Rec]2. Unlike that film, which saw a medical officer and Swat team outfitted with video cameras and sent into the sealed off apartment tenement to control the situation, the Us sequel will reportedly be set in an airport!!

ABC had an uncommonly good comedy development season last year, launching one out-of-the-box hit in "Modern Family" and two other shows, "The Middle" and "Cougar Town," that have both improved by huge amounts over the course of their first seasons.
The network is hoping to duplicate that success with three more comedies this year. The multi-camera show "Better Together" will join ABC's Wednesday lineup in the fall, and we may see the other two -- "Mr. Sunshine" and "Happy Endings" -- before 2010 is out too, according to ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson.
Time will tell if the new shows will make the grade. For now, we have a few thoughts. (Our take on ABC's new dramas is here.)

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation carried the night for CBS on Thursday, but NBC put up a pretty good fight with an impressive showing from ER. CBS' 9 p.m. stalwart CSI as usual was the most-watched program of the night by a mile, averaging 27.2 million viewers and 9.5 rating/23 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. NBC won the opening hour of primetime in both key measures with Joey (12.4 million, 5.0/14) followed by midseason entry Committed (11 million, 4.7/12). The peacock's fortunes faded at 9 p.m. with back-to-back repeats of Will & Grace (9.5 million, 4.4/11). At 10 p.m., the peacock's ER (18.5 million, 8.3/21) pole-vaulted into first place in adults 18-49 and nearly tied CBS' Without a Trace (18.7 million, 6.1/16) in viewers.

There just might be some life left in NBC's primetime schedule, after all. After a sluggish start to the fall season, NBC posted modest improvements in several troubled time slots in the opening week of 2005. Three new series bested their time slots' woeful season-to-date averages in the 18-49 demographic, and struggling veteran Law & Order managed to top its new tormentor on Wednesdays at 10 p.m., CSI: NY. No one is declaring a comeback just yet, but Mitch Metcalf, executive vp program planning and scheduling at NBC, likes what he sees. "We've been really pleased with the way the shows have rolled out," he said. "It feels like a second premiere week because we've been on the air with new shows each night." New drama Medium enjoyed an impressive 18-49 debut, nearly tieing an original episode of its powerful 10 p.m. competitor, CSI: Miami, and doubling the demo average for the time slot. On Tuesday, new sitcom Committed found a decent audience as a lead-in to the Dateline NBC interview with Amber Frey, which provided the newsmagazine its biggest audience in three years.
NBC had a solid night all around in primetime Tuesday with the penultimate installment of The Biggest Loser, the premiere of sitcom Committed and a Dateline NBC interview with the former lover of convicted murderer Scott Peterson. But the BCS championship college football game delivered the nightly win by a mile to ABC with its coverage of USC's 55-19 rout of Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. The game drew 21.4 million viewers and averaged a 7.4 rating/19 share among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research -- ABC's highest marks on the night since January 2000 and May 2000, respectively. NBC put up a pretty good fight against the Orange Bowl fireworks. From 8-9:30 p.m., Biggest Loser hit series highs in total viewers and adults 18-49. The reality show averaged 11.3 million viewers and 4.8/12 in 18-49, peaking its final half-hour with 12.2 million viewers and a 5.3/12 in the demo.
LONDON -- The Five channel continued its comedy-acquisition spree Thursday, saying it has picked up the U.K. pay and free windows for MGM sitcom Crazy for You. The deal comes just a week after Five beat rivals ITV and Sky to pick up Friends spinoff Joey and the Charlie Sheen starrer Two and a Half Men. The deals are part of a bid by program head Dan Chambers and acquisitions head Jeff Ford to build a primetime comedy block on a network that has until now mainly bought movies and hard-hitting crime series, including The Shield and CSI. Five said it will pick up 13 episodes of Crazy, which is due to air on NBC in January, and will sell on the pay TV rights to the Paramount Comedy Channel. Financial details were not disclosed.
