This is a superb movie that sets the inhumanity of war against the humanity of the individuals trapped in it's grip. Much in the spirit of Remarque's novel (and the later silent and sound films) "All Quiet on the Western Front," the miracle of a ceasefire on Christmas Eve 1914 is portrayed vividly and in a way that contrasts well against the mindless propaganda-filled, simplistic views of the pro-war contingent who were not actually in the trenches, but who were happy to send young men off to die in them. Brilliant acting, placed against realistic WWI scenes and authentic, beautifully-performed music take the viewer back a century and compel one to reflect on how little the human race seems to have changed since then.
