Amid the endless excitement surrounding Taylor Swift's rereleased albums, "1989 (Taylor's Version)" emerged as a focal point of anticipation for fans, as the 2014 album is widely regarded as Swift's most celebrated. The original "1989" album earned 10 Grammy nominations and secured three wins, including album of the year.
Staying true to her pattern of revisiting her past work, Swift included "From the Vault" tracks on "1989 (Taylor's Version)" - unreleased gems from the album's initial creation that didn't make the final cut. The response to the five vault tracks on her latest album has been overwhelmingly positive, with some fans even declaring these new additions as their favorites.
Swift teased the titles of the vault tracks months before the album's release, and fans were especially fascinated by the track titled "Slut!" Swifties eagerly speculated about the song's theme, believing it might address the media's scrutiny of Swift's love life during the period of its release.

This one is for the “lonely Starbucks lovers” conspiracists. On Tuesday, days before Taylor Swift is set to release her 1989 (Taylor’s Version), the singer shared a photo of what seems to be handwritten lyrics from one of the “From the Vault” tracks on her upcoming record.
“Let’s fast forward to 300 takeout coffees later/I see your profile and your smile on unsuspecting waiters,” a post in Swift’s story reads, in what appears to be lyrics.

Beneath every placid surface and between each crashing wave, the movies’ most magical aquatic adventures portend the possibility of mermaids. Half-human, half-fish creatures swam onto the big screen at the turn of the 20th century, appearing in silent works such as Georges Méliès‘ 1904 short film “The Mermaid” and John G. Adolfi’s 1918 feature “Queen of the Sea” among others. The mythical archetype was subsequently reeled in as the effervescent love interest template for numerous ’30s and ’40s rom-coms, with the concept perfected in Irving Pichel’s well-loved talky “Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid,” starring Ann Blyth.
The siren songs characteristic of these mysterious ocean-dwellers even resulted in a string of MGM aqua musicals. Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” brought the mermaid musical to the animation-loving masses in 1989, winning Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Under the Sea” at the Oscars. Most of the well-known mermaid films are romantic and upbeat, from the tween fantasy "Aquamarine" to Disney's revolutionary animated feature "The Little Mermaid" (which will be reimagined as a live-action movie in May), and the sex comedy "Splash" where Tom Hanks meets a beautiful mermaid who also happens to be the girl of his dreams. But mermaids can also be a nightmare.
In Greek mythology, mermaids — also known as sirens — are half-human, half-sea creatures who are mysterious and inquisitive, but also deceitful. According to folklore from around the world, female mermaids are harborers of doom. They use their bewitching singing voices to hypnotize male sailors and lure them to a watery death. In Homer's "Odyssey," Odysseus forces his men to fill their ears with wax so that they are not tempted by a mermaid's enchanting song.

Alright everyone, we’ve got all the spookies of October out of our system. Time to turn our eye to Hulu’s list of new releases for November 2022 to celebrate a new fall tradition of…hunky male dancers?
That’s right, Hulu’s biggest original title for November 2022 is Welcome to Chippendales on Nov. 22. This limited series stars Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the real life founder of the original Chippendales club of exotic male dancers. After hits like The Dropout and Pam & Tommy, Hulu likely has high hopes for this one.
The other big original series of note this month is FX’s Fleishman is in Trouble on Nov. 17. This is based on a 2019 novel of the same name and stars Jesse Eisenberg as the titular Toby Fleischman in crisis. Before that, Hulu is teaming up with ABC for some true crime docuseries like Where is Private Dulaney?...

In February of this year Hulu unleashed the true crime limited series “Pam & Tommy.” The Emmy-nominated series prompted audiences to look at the nature of celebrity culture, misogyny, and complicity in the wake of the infamous 1990s sex tape that shaped the internet. This month Robert Siegel, one-half of the creative team that brought “Pam & Tommy” to screens, returns with a similar true-life story: “Welcome to Chippendales.”
“Welcome to Chippendales” follows Somen “Steve” Banerjee’s (Kumail Nanjiani) rise and fall in the adult entertainment industry. Matt Shakman directs the series, with Nanjiani, his wife Emily V. Gordon, co-showrunner and writer Siegel, co-showrunner Jenni Konner, and writer Rajiv Joseph among the executive producers.
Per the official synopsis, the sprawling true crime saga “Welcome to Chippendales” tells the outrageous true story of Banerjee, an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of the world’s greatest male-stripping empire. The series...

Early-2000s songstress JoJo had the internet reeling over the weekend and into the beginning of the workweek after sharing a skin-baring shot with her Instagram fans.
The 31-year-old performer, whose real name is Joanna Noëlle Levesque, got in touch with her sultry side as she shared what seemed to be a throwback snap.
Wearing some sheer, lime-green lingerie while sitting on a porch and sipping what appeared to be coffee, the Too Little Too Late singer sizzled in the two-pic series.
“not these pics from a couple years ago screaming at me to chill on the desserts (and the Sauvignon blanc and the bread baskets) presently,” she captioned the shots before adding a tag for Robin Williams‘ daughter, Zelda, who seemingly was the person behind the lens taking the photos.

Emma Roberts has been cast in “Madame Web,” the latest movie set in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.
The actor is joining a star-studded ensemble, which includes Dakota Johnson as the title hero and “Euphoria” breakout Sydney Sweeney in an undisclosed role. As previously announced, Celeste O’Connor (“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”), Isabela Merced (“Dora and the Lost City of Gold”) and Tahar Rahim (“The Mauritanian”) are rounding out the call sheet.
“Madame Web” serves as an origin story for the comic book character, a clairvoyant whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world itself. Great Freedom, starring Franz Rogowski, is showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries starting May 7, 2022. The actor is also the subject of Mubi's retrospective, Franz Rogowski: Man of the Hour.Franz Rogowski in Great Freedom (2021).Some people just have it—"it" here being largely indefinable and perhaps even a quality others also possess but for whatever reason doesn’t galvanize the masses like that rare individual. German actor Franz Rogowski is one of those people, a once-in-a-generation talent whose meteoric rise has been as surprising as it is warranted. Though he’d featured prominently as both a lead (in German director Jakob Lass’s 2013 bizarre romantic improvisation Love Steaks) and a supporting player, Rogowski’s star truly began to rise when Berlin School auteur Christian Petzold cast him in his 2018 masterpiece Transit, which launched the face that launched a thousand appreciations of it, particularly in the United States where he had theretofore been largely unknown.

I’ve still got a pretty long list of movies from the year that I would like to catch up on, including the other movie from director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Wheel Of Fortune And Fantasy, Hamaguchi’s was a name that was completely unknown to me before a couple of months ago, so it’s exciting to actually have another film of his on which to hang my high expectations, after being so captivated by Drive My Car. But there are others than have yet gone unseen, including end-of-year award contenders like Pedro Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, King Richard and Belfast, along with potentially fascinating (or disappointing) titles like Luca, Red Rocket, Citizen Ashe, Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar, A Choice Of Weapons: Inspired By Gordon Parks,...

Get in touch to send in cinephile news and discoveries. For daily updates follow us @NotebookMUBI.NEWSAbove: Sidney Poitier holding his best actor Oscar, won for his role in Lilies of the Field (1963). The singular actor, director, and civil rights activist Sidney Poitier died last Thursday. An immigrant from the Bahamas who rose to prominence through the American Negro Theatre, then Broadway, Poitier entered Hollywood when few complex roles for Black actors were available. He became the first Black man to win the best actor Oscar in 1963 for Lillies of the Field, but also frequently received criticism for playing roles perceived as overly chaste and stately. Poitier persisted nonetheless, and later directed his own films, such as Buck and the Preacher (1972), starring his friend Harry Belafonte and Ruby Dee, and the Gene Wilder-Richard Pryor prison break comedy Stir Crazy (1980). The prolific critic, programmer, and filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich also died on Thursday.

With Nsw reopening for the fully vaccinated, Sydney Film Festival is set to finally go ahead, with a line-up that director Nashen Moodley believes is one the most diverse and exciting in the event’s 68-year history.
Traditionally held in June, this year has seen the festival pushed back twice, initially to August, and then November.
Yet when the Delta outbreak nixed the August edition, it was unclear that the festival would realistically be held at all. Indeed, Sff will mark the first major festival event to occur in Sydney’s CBD post-lockdown, a notion that fills Moodley with “excitement but trepidation”.
The move to November meant the festival was tasked with reconfirming every title that had been programmed so far. Overall, it lost about 20 films, but gained almost 30, including some of the year’s most anticipated out of Venice and Toronto.

Bisbee ’17 (Robert Greene)
Over the past decade, Robert Greene has carved out a place as one of the most vital American documentarians working today, and with Bisbee ’17, he has produced perhaps his most accomplished work to date. A chronicle of the centennial reenactment of the forced deportation of mining workers that occurred in the eponymous Arizona town, the film emerges as a clear-eyed, blistering look into contemporary political divisions through an entire spectrum of viewpoints, while still possessing some of the most lucid and impressive filmmaking of 2018. – Ryan S.

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Hand Habits, the project of L.A.-based musician Meg Duffy, has returned with a new song, “Aquamarine,” from their upcoming album, Fun House, out October 22nd via Saddle Creek.
“Aquamarine” is an expansive song that steadily builds to a pristine dancefloor-ready peak — a moment that Duffy brings to life on a brilliantly lit stage in the single-take video for the song, directed by V Haddad.

With the Greater Sydney lockdown due to extend until at least the end of the month, Sydney Film Festival, intended to run August 18-29, will now move to new dates in early November.
This is the second date change for the festival so far this year; typically, Sff is held in June. It pushed its dates to August to following the shifts of major festivals like Cannes and Berlin.
In 2020, the festival was initially cancelled outright, before organisers pivoted to a smaller, online-only line-up of 33 films.
However, this year, while various models were considered through the Covid outbreak, moving entirely online was not an option, nor was a hybrid festival.
Sff CEO Leigh Small tells If that in rescheduling to November, the most important consideration was that the festival be able to go ahead in person, noting that audiences want to get back into cinemas, and industry is financially reliant on an in-cinema model.

It’s a bold, new post-Loki world for Disney+. To deal with it, Disney+ is going right back to the Marvel well for its list of August 2021 new releases.
Marvel’s What If…? premieres August 11 on Disney+. This is an animated series that will feature speculative stories within the MCU like “What if Peggy Carter became Captain America?”, “What if the Ravagers took T’Challa to space?”, and “What if…zombies?!?!?!” While What…If? always seemed like a fun thought exercise, the series has really taken on a vital multiversal context in light of Loki‘s conclusion.
In non-Marvel news, Disney+ will be filling out its library offerings this month. Mrs. Doubtfire arrives on August 6 and will be followed by Eragon on August 20. After its brief premier access release, Cruella will make itself a permanent, free home on Disney on August 27.
There aren’t many other original Disney+ series to speak of in August.

Netflix has set the adult cast of their upcoming Australian family movie True Spirit with Oscar winner Anna Paquin, Avatar franchise star Cliff Curtis and Oscar nominee Josh Lawson.
True Spirit is based on the true story of Jessica Watson, a 16-year-old Australian who in 2010 became the youngest person to sail solo, nonstop and unassisted around the world. She accomplished what many thought impossible, navigating some of the world’s most challenging stretches of ocean and surviving seven knockdowns while at sea for 210 days. Watson will consult on the biopic.
The trio join previously announced Teagan Croft, who’ll portray Watson. Paquin is set to play Jessica’s mum, Julie Watson; Lawson is Jessica’s dad, Roger Watson, and Curtis is Jessica’s coach, Ben Bryant.
The movie will be shot in Queensland and Sydney later this year with a predominantly local cast and crew. The production is backed by...

Undine (Paula Beer) is a freelance urban development expert who regularly lectures on Berlin’s architecture and its relationship to that city’s troubled past. She also has a secret: She’s the Undine of European myth, a mermaid–water spirit whose own trouble necessarily involves facilitating the death of any man who betrays her love. In “Undine,” the latest from acclaimed German director Christian Petzold, that gendered myth and Berlin’s historical collective trauma become inextricably linked in mutual heartbreak.
We meet Undine as she confronts one of those men, Johannes (Jacob Matschenz). He’s breaking up with her and would like a clean exit. Tearfully, she informs him that he has to die in a very sorry-i-don’t-make-the-rules manner. He walks away, never having bought into her story. But before Undine can carry out her mythology-bound task, Christoph (Franz Rogowski) walks into the picture, flirting.

Paula Beer as “Undine” in Christian Petzold’s Undine. An IFC Films Release. Courtesy of IFC Films.
A strange, suspenseful tale of love, betrayal and tragedy, Undine is a re-imagining of a fairy-tale myth, set in modern Berlin. Director/writer Christian Petzold reunites the stars of his film Transit, Paula Beers and Franz Rogowski, for this tale of mystery and romance, which allows Undine to capitalize on the remarkable chemistry between the two actors in that earlier film. Undine is a haunting tale with a mysterious aura and a touch of magical realism, beautifully constructed and shot, with gripping, heartbreaking performances.
Mystery, romance and myth mix in Christian Petzold’s Undine, inspired by the fairy-tale of the undine, or ondine. an always-female water spirit that lives forest lakes. Like many fairy tales, love and death are intertwined in the various tales of the undine, a supernatural creature who can gain...

Few filmmakers enliven conversation more than Christian Petzold, whose approach to any question—be it transposing narrative and philosophical tenets between national myth and contemporary film or his love for a certain Gerard Butler actioner—is attentive to the point of ravenous.
So as much as I enjoyed his latest work, Undine—which reunites him with Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski from Transit, a film that year by year further reveals itself as one of last decade’s finest—it was difficult to prioritize any one topic. Petzold is the rare arthouse figurehead who seems to live in the real world with real people; while the interview contained the hows and whys of his latest achievement, it shakes out, to use his own description of Undine, more liquid than solid, liable to take any direction the topic does (or doesn’t) suggest. Along our way “the cock of Donald Sutherland...

After first gaining prominence in Germany as a teen actor, Paula Beer rose to international arthouse stardom with her leading role in Francois Ozon’s Frantz in 2016. Winning the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor at that year’s Venice Film Festival, an accolade previously awarded to the likes of Jennifer Lawrence and Gael García Bernal, put her in demand from Europe’s most renowned auteurs. In 2018, she starred in both Never Look Away, the German language comeback of The Lives of Others director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, and Transit, the final film in Christian Petzold’s self-proclaimed “Love in the Time of Oppressive Systems” trilogy.
Three years later, her second collaboration with Petzold and actor Franz Rogowski is finally getting released to American audiences. In Undine, Beer plays a modern interpretation of the famous mythological character. We’re introduced to her amidst a breakup with her lover, informing...

What will moviegoing look like post-vaccine? We might soon have a better idea. Where May served as something of a dry run for whether or not audiences turn out via films like Wrath of Man and A Quiet Place Part II, June looks like the main event thanks to In the Heights, F9, and a new Pixar movie. Wait… the Pixar movie is premiering on Disney+? Maybe we won’t know what post-pandemic moviegoing will look like for a while after all.
Still, there’s plenty to watch on big screens big and small.

The Black Swan was the last woman standing on Wednesday night’s Season 5 finale of “The Masked Singer.” Despite the feathered diva’s best efforts, her performance of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” by Michael Bolton landed her in second place. The runner-up defeated the Chameleon, who was revealed to be rapper Wiz Khalifa, but was ultimately defeated by the Piglet. When it came time for the Black Swan to reveal herself, Grammy winning singer JoJo emerged from behind the mask.

“I really was missing being on stage,” JoJo admitted during her unmasked interview with host Nick Cannon. “And I was developing this stage fright. I was like, can I even sing anymore? Can I even perform? I was just all in my head and feeling way too anxious about things. This freaked me out so I said yes to it.

“The Masked Singer” semifinal on May 19 includes just one woman — the Black Swan — among the four remaining celebrity contestants. We think this powerhouse performer is the best singer still in the hunt to win the season 5 Golden Mask. She faces off against three fellows who are disguised as the Chameleon, Piglet and Yeti.
The Black Swan secured her place in the semis by winning over the four judges with her cover of the Ed Sheeran hit “Thinking Out Loud” on the May 12 episode. The series Phantoms Among Us: The Films of Christian Petzold starts on Mubi on May 13, 2021 in many countries.Sooner or later, most interviews with Christian Petzold recur to literature as a pool of inspiration, the visceral experience of books that he synthesizes into on screen narratives. Thickening his films with references, he carefully constructs audacious architectures of ideas and aesthetic impressions, so that a “great desire for cinema” fuses with the legacy of his teacher, Harun Farocki, well known for his documentaries and essay films. Petzold’s “Spielfilme” can thus have an intellectual bent that reflects on “concepts [...] in such a way that they support one another, that each becomes articulated through its configuration with the others,” as Adorno wrote about the Essay as Form. Disparate elements, he described enigmatically, “crystallize as a configuration of their motion,” but do not come across as rigidly discursive. However, the depth suggested by...

IFC Films has released the first official trailer for “Undine,” a new romantic drama from German auteur Christian Petzold.
“Undine” premiered in competition at last year’s Berlin International Film Festival, where it took home the Firesci Prize as well as the Silver Bear for best actress for star Paula Beer. She stars alongside Franz Rogowski, reuniting the duo from Petzold’s lauded 2018 thriller “Transit.” Petzold takes a different approach in “Undine,” with the romantic drama marking a new direction for the filmmaker following a string of emotional dramas with historical themes related to German identity.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Set in Berlin, Undine (Beer) works as a historian lecturing on Berlin’s urban development. She knows all about the Humboldt Forum, and has a knack for dressing. She is nonchalantly beautiful, and the way she imparts her knowledge about the city that was built on a swamp is...

Acclaimed German filmmaker Christian Petzold (“Transit“) makes films like no one else. While grounded and realistic, they’re also elevated, melodramatic, and sometimes even steeped in ideas of fairy tales. While not an overly stylish genre filmmaker per see, Petzold always subtly reimagines genre in his films, whether it’s the thriller, melodramas, the spy genre, film noir, and more. But for his latest film, “Undine,” he perhaps takes all these ideas.

"An enigmatic and hypnotic modern fairy tale." IFC Films has released a new official US trailer for the German indie romance film titled Undine, from filmmaker Christian Petzold. This originally premiered at last year's Berlin Film Festival, also where Paula Beer won the Silver Bear for Best Actress in this film. Beer stars as the titular Undine (based on the Undine myth), who works as a historian lecturing on Berlin's urban development. But when the man she loves leaves her... the ancient myth catches up with her. She must kill the man who betrays her and return to the water, but she also falls in love with him. Also with Franz Rogowski as her new lover, with Maryam Zaree, Jacob Matschenz, Anne Ratte-Polle, and Rafael Stachowiak. It's a very sweet film about love, I wrote a little review of it. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Christian Petzold's Undine,...

If we were to rank the selections of our summer movie preview, there’s no doubt that Christian Petzold’s Undine would be sitting at the top. The German master’s follow-up to Transit is a beguiling, strange, and romantic retelling of the European myth, starring Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski. Ahead of a June 4 release in theaters and digitally from IFC Films, the new trailer has now arrived.
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “One of Petzold’s most enduring qualities as a filmmaker has been his unapologetic nostalgia for romantic cinema (Transit’s echoes of Casablanca were certainly not coincidental) and it’s difficult not to smile at the thought of him coming up with this meet-cute–as Christophe and Undine lie on the floor awash with water and reeds; boy picking pieces of glass from girl’s blouse.
