Over the last couple decades, director Mike Hurst has brought us several genre films – House of the Dead 2, Room 6, The Darkroom, Pumpkinhead 4: Blood Feud, Paradox – and his latest is a self-financed labor of love he has been working on for the last four years. It’s called Transmission, and it has been officially accepted into the Pigeon Shrine FrightFest festival that’s set to be held in London from August 24th through 28th. In anticipation of Transmission‘s FrightFest screening, we’ve gotten our hands on the trailer for the film, and you can check it out in the embed above!
Here’s how Hurst described the film: “Basically the whole movie takes place on a TV screen as we channel-surf late at night, slowly realizing that the different stories on the different channels are actually all connected, all parts of the same horrific story…” As the viewer flips through the channels,...

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

The best way to experience one of the worst games ever? Watch an expert blitz through it in a matter of minutes...
The annual Awesome Games Done Quickly event gives speedrunners everywhere a chance to showcase how fast they can beat some of the best games ever made. However, one of the highlights of the event has long been the early hours of the morning the event's organizers devote to speedrunners who have mastered some of the worst games ever made. This block - affectionately known as awful games done quickly - proves that some truly bad games are way more entertaining when they're beaten really fast.

Classic Sega video games such as Altered Beast and Streets of Rage will be part of an adaptation blitz for film and TV.
The next big videogame-to-movie adaptation is but a few weeks away, as director Justin Kurzel is aiming to steer the long-mooted Assassin’s Creed movie to box office gold. Michael Fassbender is starring in that one, of course.

If you’re at all in touch with your geek side, you already know about all the great horror movies that are Christmas-themed. Chances are you’ve stumbled across Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, or Santa’s Slay. Everybody knows Batman Returns and Die Hard take place around December 25th. However, did you know that several disasters have occurred around the most wonderful time of the year?
Anchor Bay Entertainment and the SyFy Channel spent the past few years reminding us that even the holidays aren’t safe from catastrophic events which could bring about the end of the world. Disaster-oriented Christmas movies were becoming an annual tradition up until 2013. The two media giants banned together for three straight years to bring us a trilogy of B-movie entertainment that I think it’s high time they continue.

Aside from The Return of… or The Revenge of…, there may be no more beloved horror titles than those involving The House…. There is something very mysterious and foreboding about a mysterious house containing all kinds of unknown horrors.
Shout Factory has released a new entry on the list with House in the Alley arising today, May 27th. The obscure Vietnamese horror pic is sure to pique the interest of fans and follow in the footsteps of some of the freaky House-themed films of the past…which leads us to our newest Top List: Horror's 7 Most Haunting Houses.
Make no mistake; we aren't necessarily talking about 'haunted houses' here, but 'haunting houses,' meaning movies with House in the title that did a wonderful job of scaring the hell out of us. We'll begin with some honorable mentions to get the ball rolling.

House of the Dead 2 (2005)
Director: Michael Hurst
Writers: Mark A. Altman, Michael Roesch, Peter Scheerer
Cast: Emanuelle Vauguier (Alexandria), Ed Quinn (Ellis), Sticky Fingaz (Dalton), Nadine Velazquez (Rodriguez), Sid Haig (Professor Curien)
I can’t believe that I’m singing the praises of a “House of the Dead” movie. The first one was such a big disappointment, that a sequel that was so dissimilar to it in every way was a pretty welcome sight. I’m not a gamer, and perhaps I might have enjoyed the original, a bit more if I had. Doubtful, but maybe.
This one has Sid Haig, the hardest working man in exploitation film for four decades and counting as a professor that has come up with a way to reanimate the dead. He picks up a test subject/victim from the local college. She ends up being the...

Zombies are freaking terrifying. They aren’t real obviously…but they’re still terrifying.
How do you actually define what a zombie is though? It’s hardly a definitive term – are they fast? Slow? Do they have to rise out of the ground or can they simply be an infection? For this list, I chose to define zombies by the classic ‘Romero’ horrors – humans that have died or been infected (but still resemble something that is dead) and are now reanimated, driven solely by their need for flesh.
This excludes several games that would undoubtedly make this list, notably Resident Evil 4 (an all-time favourite) and The Last Of Us (please don’t hate me) which both feature a parasitic infection, creating zombie-esque enemies rather than actual zombies.
You may disagree with that evaluation (and please, feel free to discuss it in the comments) but without further ado, here...

Around the Dread Central offices the PlayStation 3 is used mainly as a Blu-ray player, and it's a damned fine one, too. Sadly, other than a few sporadic games here and there, we really don't use it as much of a gaming console. That could change soon, though, as Sega has announced some news we've been dying to hear!

Zombies are the best of the horror movie monsters….. It’s irrefutable.
Some might argue that it’s vampires or werewolves, or even slasher villains like Jason or Freddy. But there’s something intrinsically frightening about Zombies. Perhaps it’s because they represent death, or the way in which they can often be used metaphorically to reflect real-life concerns. Honestly though, it’s probably just the idea of being slowly eaten alive – especially if its by your best friend or even your gran.

Jovanka Vuckovic’s first book-length filmic writing has taken the form of a thoughtful exercise on the zombie phenomenon in modern film and literary culture. While she delves into the history of the American zombie experience and Poe’s romantic playfulness with the creatures in some of his stories and poems, An Illustrated History is really about twentieth century zombie film phenomenon and how it has influenced these early years of the twenty-first.
Opening with a light history of the Haitian zombie mythos in American folklore and its African origins, the book quickly moves on to literary appearances of the creatures prior to film technology. These two historical influences on the modern zombie movie become apparent in discussions of White Zombie, which Vuckovic cites as the first real zombie film, and other...

A 1999 demo promoting the ruinously expensive Shenmue (called “What’s Shenmue?”) featured an exclusive scene in which then company president Yukawa-san could be seen slumped at his desk, head in hands, surrounded by piles of unsold consoles (above). Deep down, Sega must have known the Dreamcast didn’t stand a chance even before they axed it two years later.
Even though the Sega Dreamcast enjoyed a relatively short lifespan (officially somewhere between its 1998 Japanese launch and late 2002 termination) and wasn’t supported at all by the most powerful publisher of the day (Electronic Arts) the well-loved machine still boasts an impressive library of titles.

As an increasingly old and, as some would have it, bitter man, I’ve recently begun to cast my resentful mind back on the many trials that afflicted the 90s gamer which today’s youth would doubtless fail to grasp. I’m not talking about the obvious here: graphics have gotten far better and we didn’t have touch screens on our Sega Mega Drives. Instead the list below gathers together some odd things even those who lived at the time may have relegated to the limits of their subconscious and one you may never have heard of (though I’m certain I haven’t made it up). Quirks, practices and technological limitations that your grandchildren, dear reader, will scarcely be able to believe afflicted you: the greatest generation.

The Caller The Caller, which appears to be a cross between The Grudge and The Butterfly Effect, offers up its spin on the universal question "if you changed the past, how would it affect the future?", but gives it a horror spin as a woman is plunged into a nightmarish series of events after innocently enough just picking up her phone.
Troubled divorcee, Mary Kee (Rachelle Lefevre - Twilight), begins to receive mysterious phone calls from an unknown caller. She quickly begins to feel haunted in her own home. When she discovers that the person is calling from the past, Mary realises that she will have to kill her in order to survive. New York – March 1, 2011 – Since 2002, Syfy viewers have experienced mutated sharks, mosquito men, alligators as big as blimps, vengeful demon moths, pterodactyls, werewolves, dragons and really, really big snakes. Plus earthquakes that split the U.S. in half, man-made volcanoes, space storms, tornadoes made of ice, magnetic meteors and plagues of killer locusts — every unnatural disaster imaginable.
Now Syfy celebrates its bi-weekly assault on humanity with the premiere of its 200th Saturday Original Movie, Scream of the Banshee, on Saturday, March 26, at 9Pm (Et/Pt).
In Scream of the Banshee, when a college professor opens a mysterious and ornate box discovered hidden in the tunnels under her university, she and her students hear the horrifying scream of a bloodthirsty Banshee. Everyone who hears the scream is fated to die a strange and terrible death.

Shock caught wind of a new film in development with Michael Hurst at the helm. Hurst has Re-Kill on the way through After Dark Originals. He previously directed House of the Dead 2 , Room 6 and Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud . He's now attached to Glimmer and we've got the official synopsis below: When 16 year old Annie Tuttle takes a walk at her lake front home she spots a young girl standing on the ice covered lake. As Lucy falls through the ice, Annie hurries to rescue her. She sees a figure at the center of the lake and the figure seems to shimmer and disappear before her eyes. Nine years later Annie is happily married to Jack Cole. Annie gets a letter which reads: "It's going to kill you. Come alone". The letter leads her to the Granger Institute and Lucy...

For some reason, no one has given Emmanuelle Vaugier her own TV series yet, though she did flirted with one on the Sci-Fi Channel a few years back that never went anywhere. Fortunately for fans of the “House of the Dead 2″ star, plenty of TV producers have cast her as a semi-regular on plenty of TV shows, including “CSI: New York”, “Human Target”, and now, “Covert Affairs”. In USA Network’s breezy new spy show “Covert Affairs”, Vaugier will play a character described as a “fearless journalist/blogger”, which could basically be anything. She’ll be starring opposite Piper Perabo, playing a CIA agent trainee who gets promoted to the big time when the CIA brass wants to use her to capture her ex-boyfriend. Also in the cast: former “Heroes” star Sendhil Ramamurthy, and “Jake 2.0.” himself, Christopher Gorham. The show, currently shooting in Toronto, is set to debut...

Dtv sequels – we all love ‘em right? Well yes and no. Some are great (“Wrong Turn 2”), some are average (“House of the Dead 2″), and some are unbearably shit (pretty much all of them). Still, I watch them, and it seems so do many other people, as the market is growing and is also evidently profitable. Just look at the “Boogeyman” franchise of horror movies, or the “American Pie” sequels – surely they wouldn’t keep on getting made if nobody bought them? So due to this burgeoning market, inevitably a sequel to “House on Haunted Hill” was greenlit. But was it one of the good batch? Negative on the offence red leader. At least for me anyway, as some might be drawn in by how fantastic it looks, which is certainly impressive, so hats off to those behind the cinematography and direction. It really does feel as though it’s a big-budget theatrical release,...

If ever there was a movie that did not require a follow-up, it would be Uwe Boll's disastrous Alone in the Dark. Uwe Boll only produced this time around, allowing the makers of the direct-to-dvd House of the Dead 2, Peter Scheerer and Michael Roesch, to write and direct this second installment of the Alone in the Dark franchise that continues its grand tradition of gobbledygook storytelling.
An evil centuries old spectral witch lurks inside a lab?
The role of Edward Carnby originated by Christian Slater is now played by Rick Yune; what exactly happened at the end of the original that turned Carnby Asian?
Gone are Slater, Tara Reid, and Stephen Dorff, but what a cast they still managed to wrangle for this name-only sequel about a team of witch hunters battling it out with a wicked witch while fighting over a cursed dagger: Rick Yune, Bill Moseley,...

We now have a new favorite title for a Syfy original movie: Mongolian Death Worms! But bear in mind that they didn’t make up that moniker; it seems the Mongolian Death Worm is a cryptozoological species that has been reported and investigated for decades now, which makes it a surprise that Syfy didn’t catch up with it sooner.
The Worm supposedly ranges from 2 to 5 feet long and lives under the sands of the Gobi desert, from which it emerges to kill its prey via either spitting caustic acid or launching electrical shocks. As for its movie incarnation, Mongolian Death Worms recently lensed in Dallas, TX for Ogre and Wyvern director Steven R. Monroe, who scripted with Sea Beast’s Neil Elman. Veteran actor-turned-filmmaker Andrew Stevens produced, with Masters Of Horror: The Damned Thing’s Sean Patrick Flanery, House Of The Dead 2’s Victoria Pratt, George Cheung...

Actor/Rapper Kirk Jones aka Sticky Fingaz has dabbled in the horror genre quite a bit. Perhaps best known as the small screen version of Blade in SpikeTV's short-live Blade: The Series, Sticky's been seen in House Of The Dead 2, Nite Tales, and Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood.
Now he's jumped behind the camera to write and direct his first feature, A Day In The Life - "the first film told entirely in rap." Could this be Repo! for the hip-hop crowd?
So why am I posting this since the film isn't exactly "horror?" A: That's why it's going in my blog section. B: This is just too entertaining not to share.
A Day In The Life was just released on July 7th via Lionsgate, with the DVD available here. Enjoy...

Mindfire Entertainment has announced its plans to turn the popular Eidos video game Fear Effect into a feature film, with director Stanley Tong in talks to helm the action picture. Mindfire CEO Mark A. Altman (House of the Dead 2, DOA: Dead or Alive) is set to produce with Mindfire chairman Mark Gottwald and senior vp business affairs Chuck Speed, based on a screenplay by Steve Kriozere. The film is being repped internationally by Yarek Danielak's Arsenal Pictures in Cannes. Altman described the movie as Mission: Impossible meets Silent Hill, adding that the film will faithfully follow the story line of the original PlayStation game. It will be set 10 years in the future, however, rather than in the alternate world of the source material.
