Everyone has a high school movie that rings uncomfortably true to their own experiences as a teenager. For some, it's a bitingly satirical portrait like "Heathers" or "Mean Girls," while for others, it's a brutally honest dramedy like "The Edge of Seventeen." But for me, there's only one film that really captures what my time was like as a non-Mormon attending a predominantly Mormon high school in a small Utah town in the early 2000s, and that's "Napoleon Dynamite." True, writer/director Jared Hess' 2004 cult hit takes place in the filmmaker's hometown of Preston, Idaho, but ... well, let's just say that if you know anything about small-town Utah and Idaho Mormon culture, then you know they weren't exactly worlds apart when the film was made.

Fandoms everywhere can now rejoice, for in October Our Flag Means Death finally returns to our screens for its second season. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be romancing the high seas once more thanks to an enormous outpouring of love and support from the show’s fans. The safety of the cult favorite is not yet known beyond season two, but if this one is as good as the first, it certainly won’t be for lack of trying.

Patrick Schwarzenegger can’t reveal any details about his work in the upcoming spinoff of Amazon’s “The Boys” — no, he won’t confirm reports that he’s playing a character named Golden Boy — but he admits that he has shown his father, Arnold Schwarzenegger, photos from the set.
“He looked at me and he was like, ‘What the fuck are you filming?’” Patrick tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “I was like, ‘It’s this show called ‘The Boys.’ … You have to watch an episode to understand it, or else I can’t articulate what happens in it.”
“The Boys” producers reached out to Schwarzenegger for the spinoff after meeting him years ago when he auditioned to play the character of Homelander on the original series. He wasn’t allowed to read the spinoff...

The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Los Angeles, March 2: Actor Patrick Schwarzenegger said he takes acting advice from his father, Hollywood action superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Talking about whether his father likes to show him how it's done, Patrick said, "No, he doesn't. You know, if I have questions or if I had advice or want to hear what he has to say, I ask but otherwise no. I wouldn't say so."
The young actor grew up in the spotlight and started his career from the age of 10 when he had a small role in The Benchwarmers, but he always knew his father was a big star.
"I think from some age I understood the magnitude of his celebrity, his name and power. Then when he ran for governor and everything. So, yeah I knew. The governor today would be pretty tough. He's very straight-forward. He is what you see. He doesn't beat around the bush.

Give Terry Crews some credit, he can rock the He-Man look largely because he’s got the body and the wig, well, let’s just say the wig might need an update. In truth it’s no more ridiculous than the wig he wore when he starred in The Benchwarmers, but it could definitely use a trim. That and all frivolity aside however it’s evident as Jeremy Dick from MovieWeb can make it that Crews is responding in a big and very hilarious way to the criticisms of black women being given roles that have been primarily taken up by white people in

Ben McGrath (Chris Klein) had major league potential playing professional baseball, but his hopes to play ball literally get crushed. In this edition, we get sporty with a sequel to an underdog baseball flick that even underdogs would disown.) David Spade is attached to star in a comedy series currently in the works at HBO from writer Diablo Cody, Variety has confirmed.
The untitled half-hour series follows Calvin Wash (Spade), a semi-famous grunge musician in the ’90s who was hooked on heroin. Now he’s clean, sober and working as a waiter in the Valley. When he meets troubled 20-something actress Bailey, both of their lives change in unexpected and electrifying ways.
Spade will serve as a producer on the project in addition to starring. Cody will write and executive produce, with Jason Reitman executive producing and directing. Cody’s Vita Vera Films and Reitman’s Right of Way Films will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television.
The project reunites Reitman and Cody, who famously first collaborated on the critically-acclaimed film “Juno” in 2007. Since then, they have also worked together on the films “Tully,” “Young Adult” and “Jennifer’s Body.

Film Review: Instead of Geeky Greatness, Adam Sandler Sucks the Soul Out of a Badly Miscast ‘Pixels’
Chicago – The epitome of an idea that far outweighs its execution, “Pixels” is a bittersweet blunder that had all of the elements to be geeky great but ends up being cheesy mediocre. I could literally feel its potential for 105 minutes, but the $88 million film ultimately fails to realize it.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
At the heart of the issue is miscasting and specifically Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions. Even though he and his production company let me down in the critically panned “The Hot Chick,” “50 First Dates,” “The Longest Yard,” “The Benchwarmers,” “Click,” “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” and on and on, I honestly always give Sandler a chance even though his humor almost never works for me.
Despite my love for Pac-man, I was disappointed going into “Pixels” to see Sandler in such a lead role with his production company attached and his pals making bank with him. Still, I...

Having played Jock Kid in The Benchwarmers, enraged ex-boyfriend Glen in Stuck in Love, and Frat Boy Cooper in Grown Ups 2, Patrick Schwarzenegger is no stranger to the role of intimidating, popular kid on the block. Those are fitting roles for the son of the Terminator, the ultimate intimidating force on film. Now signed on to the growing cast of Scouts vs. Zombies, Patrick Schwarzenegger will again have the chance to be big man on campus, but this time he could be zombified.
According to Deadline, in Scouts vs. Zombies Schwarzenegger will play a high school quarterback who opposes a trio of boy scout buds played by young actors Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller, and Joseph Morgan. Veteran comedic actor David Koechner is attached to play Scout Leader Rogers.

When 42 surpassed expectations and won the most recent weekend box office, virtually every day-after industry analysis included some mention that the Jackie Robinson movie recorded the biggest and best opening weekend of any baseball movie ever. But before we give 42 a high-five as it rounds third and heads off to the box-office Hall of Fame, it’s always nice to be reminded that “biggest and best” is a skewed metric when it comes to the modern box office. Was 42′s $27.5 million opening-weekend take a larger numerical figure than that of Bull Durham, The Natural, or Field of Dreams? Yes, it was.

Don’t be surprised if the execs at Warner Bros. join in on the fun. The studio did have a grand slam weekend, after all.
Warner Bros.’ new baseball drama 42 topped the box office with $27.3 million — far ahead of recent baseball titles like Moneyball ($19.5 million debut) and Trouble with the Curve ($12.2 million). In fact, 42 scored the best ever debut for a baseball film, surpassing The Benchwarmers’ $19.7 million bow.

Will the just-released 42 have the most successful opening weekend for a baseball movie? Writer-director Brian Helgeland's 42, which features Chadwick Boseman as baseball player Jackie Robinson and veteran Harrison Ford, whose credits range from The Conversation and Star Wars in the 1970s to the more recent Cowboys & Aliens, debuted with an estimated $9.1 million at 3,003 locations this past Friday, April 12, as per studio figures found on the web site Box Office Mojo. (Almost) undeboutedly, 42 will end up grossing between $25 million and $26 million by Sunday evening. If that does indeed happen, the film will boast the best debut weekend ever for a movie about baseball -- well, sort of. Pictured above: Ford, looking remarkably different under heavy makeup, plays Brooklyn Dodgers' team executive Branch Rickey in Helgeland's movie. Well, if you dwell on a planet where inflation is as real as the plots of Hollywood films -- including those based on real-life events,...

Dimension Films' Scary Movie 5 will be looking to add a few laughs in a box office currently led by what's been called one of the scariest remakes ever in Evil Dead. Pic stars Lindsay Lohan, Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Terry Crews, Kate Walsh, Jerry O'Connell, Molly Shannon and Heather Locklear, and makes its debut in 3,402 theaters. Malcolm D. Lee directs the film which lampoons the greatest in horror and genre fare, including Mama, Paranormal Activity and more. Opening in 3,003 theaters, in a baseball drama genre that doesn't exactly command massive box office numbers, Warner Bros. Pictures' 42 will have a tough time besting Scary Movie 5, when adding the fact that the film has 400 less theaters to contend in as well. The highest baseball movie opener ever was Sony's The Benchwarmers comedy with $19.7 million, followed by Brad Pitt starrer Moneyball, the latter of which was also a drama with two strong male leads,...

Any sport at its best can serve as a motivational metaphor for life ... while any sport at its worst can still beat the Houston Astros. And then there's boxing, which is just two people literally beating each other up for money.
But with "42" (the story of Jackie Robinson's inspirational journey to integrate the major leagues) hitting theaters April 12, we thought we'd take a moment to pay tribute to the less celebrated sports films; the ones that teach us to never try and to always give up because life is just a string of disappointments sandwiched between birth and death.
'Rocky II' (1979)
Remember how great "Rocky" was? Remember the heartwarming story of a boxer past his prime finally getting a shot at the title? Remember how moved you felt when Rocky loses to Apollo but wins the respect of the world? Well, this unsubtle sequel has a message...

Super powerful Hollywood family? Check.Good looks? Check.Role where you stand around and look pretty? Check.Arnold Schwarzenegger's son Patrick (far left) will be making his first major movie appearance in "Grown Ups 2," opening in July. The 19-year-old model will play ... unsurprisingly ... a frat boy (complete with puka shell necklace). His bros include Taylor Lautner and Milo Ventimiglia (with bad blonde hair). The frat guys will force the "grownups" (Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, and David Spade) to jump off a cliff ... naked. Check out the trailer below:This isn't the first time Patrick Schwarzenegger has been on the big screen. He starred in another Happy Madison (Sandler's production company) film, "The Benchwarmers," back in 2006 and the independent film "Stuck in Love."Considering the first "Grown Ups" made $270+ million, this could be Pat's big break. He could always go back to modeling if his acting career doesn't pan out.

Stuck in Love is the first feature film from writer-director Josh Boone. And while this is our first look at his ensemble romantic-comedy, its insanely stacked cast speaks well for its script. Untangling several interwoven stories about sex, love and romance, Stuck in Love stars Kristen Bell, Logan Lerman, Jennifer Connelly, Greg Kinnear, Lily Collins, Spencer Breslin, Admission's Nat Wolff, and Patrick Schwarzenegger in his first role since Jock Kid Game #3 in 2006's The Benchwarmers. And its first trailer seems to suggest that no matter what age you are, or what stage of life you're in, love can be baffling. This is one thing that unites every member of the Borgens family. Father William (Kinnear) is a celebrated author who has been suffering from major writer's block since his wife Erica (Connelly) left him for a younger, fitter man. His teenage children are also both aspiring writers. Rusty (Wolff...

Piranha not got enough twists and turns for you? Anaconda lacking the requisite bite? Well, why not have the best of both worlds? From Mike MacLean, the writer of Sharktopus (Jaws not tentacley enough... etc.), and with Hollywood exploitation legend Roger Corman behind it, comes Piranhaconda. Somehow the movie passed us by when it aired on Syfy in June, but all 82 glorious minutes are coming to DVD on January 7, 2013. The film is directed by Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall, Camel Spiders) and stars Quentin Tarantino's Mr Blonde, Michael Madsen, fresh from Celebrity Big Brother. Joining Madsen is Rachel Hunter (The Benchwarmers) and MacLean's Sharktopus veteran Shandi Finnessey. Rounding out the cast is Rib Hillis, who you might have seen on Two and a Half Men and CSI Miami. The plot (more)...

Since its debut 37 years ago, "Saturday Night Live" has done two things incredibly well: skewer the day's headlines with a twisted, acid perspective and serve as a launching pad for some of the biggest careers in movie comedy history.
And following her tearful final spin on Saturday night's season finale, it appears clear that the show's ace player, "Bridesmaids" star Kristen Wiig, will be the latest breakout player to make a permanent leap from the stage at Studio 8H to movie stardom. Wiig has already tasted success with an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for "Bridesmaids," and she has at least half a dozen features in various stages of shooting and development. We thought it was worth taking a...

The seemingly endless wait for the Syfy summer schedule is finally over! There is good news and bad, and one thing that is both good and bad. Let’s start with that: the Eureka Season Finale. We love Eureka, so every episode is good news; the fact that it’s a series finale, not so much. Mark your calendars – and have plenty of Kleenex in stock – for July 16 at 9/8c. Right after Comic-Con, which is early this year. We’ll see if that means a panel or not.
The good news: Warehouse 13 and Alphas return on July 23. The hmmm news is that Lost Girl will move to Fridays at 10 on July 20. Hey That’S Haven’S Spot. So Where The Heck Is Haven? Admittedly we had a head’s up that Haven would be pushed to fall when we learned that the DVDs for Season 2 weren’t being released until September but Argh.

Adam Sandler’s own film career is spotty at best, but when you look at the films he produced under his company Happy Madison without starring in, there’s a strong argument to made that Happy Madison ought to stop producing films altogether. Whatever standard Sandler applies to how he chooses films seems to go out the window when he’s only the producer, and the list of cinematic abortions speaks to this: The House Bunny, Strange Wilderness, The Benchwarmers, Grandma’s Boy, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and, most recently, Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star. Bucky Larson starts with an unfunny premise and then attempts to bleed it dry. The only joke this time around is on the poor sap who picks up the DVD expecting anything beyond profound disappointment and sophomoric jokes that never elicit so much as even a chuckle.

One of the biggest actor breakouts ever to happen at the Sundance Film Festival was Jon Heder's. In 2004, his feature film debut, "Napoleon Dynamite," screened at Park City and became one of the top comedies of the year, shooting the then-unknown Heder to stardom. He landed representation soon after the fest and booked roles in such films as "Just Like Heaven," "The Benchwarmers," and "School for Scoundrels" before starring in "Blades of Glory" opposite Will Ferrell. Heder is working on the "Napoleon Dynamite" animated TV series for Fox. He majored in 3-D animation at Brigham Young University and loves bringing together his two passions. "For me, my artistic creative passion is creating characters," he says. "It comes natural because animation is acting. It's bringing life to a character. My skills in acting really led to my animation work and vice versa." Naturally GoofyBefore Heder broke out at Sundance, he.
