While Hummingbird educates the viewer on the current state of the general public in impoverished Recife, Brazil, one can leave this film feeling a sense of hope and encouragement that the community is in a process of change due to the efforts of a few individuals. The film empowers ordinary people to make a change despite our tendency to feel overwhelmed and inadequate to do so. Although it was difficult for me to see the circumstances of present day Recife, I enjoyed the film because it was inspiring to see individuals aiming at the root of the problems, rather than only treating the symptoms. This director captured the strength and richness of the children, women and life of Recife with grace and compassion.
