“To add to it, every person is unique. I am a different person from other people who have played Jodha.

And so it's come to this, the finale of the traditional Oscar-like categories in our own annual Film Bitch Awards. All the nominations have been announced in the first round ("special" non-Oscar related categories still to come). It's years like this when I wish You wish 5 were a much larger number in so many fields. There were seven leading ladies I really wanted to honor and six leading men but five does not equal six or seven. Alas. It's also strange when films you really love are denied any nominations in your own prizes. Such was the fate of one film from my top ten list (Embrace of the Serpent). Fences and Lion, two Oscar hopefuls I'm quite fond of, also look deceptively unloved with only two nominations each though with both Best Actor and Best Actress citations, Fences can't complain.

When Karan asked about her Delhi-based family and their reaction to her marrying a big actor, she underplayed it saying it’s not a big deal for them. ‘They are from a literary background and were never star-struck’, she said. In Cell by Cell, I look deeply into the panels of an issue, appreciating and analyzing the story and artistic composition.

We step back from the screen to see who is watching: Father Josephson. He has a conversation with his wife before meeting with Makoto Maki who will later be revealed as Meiko’s father.
Of note on this two-page spread is the color transition repeated in the background of most panels. Blue on top, pink on bottom. The gradient is tempered with a gray to make it more subtle, but the connotative effect reinforces the hegemonic power divide that is the backbone of the series. Blue, the color of boys, on top of pink, the color of girls. Men are in power, even in the background color.

Anyone who belongs to a Film Society knows that there’s a difference between the films people claim to admire and what they actually like to watch. Schedule an Ingmar Bergman film and a handful of people might show up, but if it’s a Roger Corman movie, they come running.
In public, these films have to be viewed ironically, with comments such as “they’re so bad they’re good” or “they’re good if you like that sort of thing”, which is understandable – who wants to be marked as a fan of Galaxy Of Terror?
If nothing else, the explosion of media has allowed people to watch what they want when they want, and to hell to with what anyone else thinks. You can read The Imitation Game’s synopsis on Wikipedia for when your Film Society friends mention it, even though you ignored it and...

EastEnders fans are surely rejoicing at the news that Dean Gaffney will be returning as Robbie Jackson after five years away.
Hapless Robbie has become a fan favourite over the years, but Gaffers himself has been entertaining us in the meantime in various ways. Here are a few highlights:
1. EastEnders: Wellard and well unlucky in love
When you think of Robbie Jackson, you probably instantly think of Wellard, one of the best soap dogs of all time. Aside from his friendship with the loyal mutt, Robbie actually had quite a lot of genuinely dramatic storylines, including having to work as a road sweeper for years.
His girlfriend's dad sent him to hospital after accusing him of rape, while he had a strained relationship with his estranged father. He didn't possess the womanising powers of his popstar counterpart, and had to call off his first engagement after she cheated on him.

The series is produced by October Films and and Marsh will be at the heart of each episode with a personal connection to each story.

Love Island's Luis Morrison tells the boys that he's "downgraded so much to go with these girls" on tonight's show (June 23).
And unbeknown to Luis - who is seemingly pieing the girls off as he chats with Omar Sultani and Josh Ritchie privately in the hot tub - Jess Hayes and Daisy Muller hear their entire conversation from the smoking area.
"I was disappointed when I first came in here, I've literally lowered my standards by going from 10s down to…" Luis starts.
Josh suggests: "Not even 6s?"
"No, no, no... I've downgraded so much to go with these other girls... I've banged some well decent girls," Luis boasts, as he goes way down in our estimation.
Omar quips: "You know it's bad when I even don't think any of the birds are fit."
An irate Jess says to Daisy: "Basically they're saying we're all hanging… I'm gonna kick off,...

Was Madhur Bhandarkar quoting a figure of 5 crore for directing Madamjee? And was that the reason that resulted in the film with Priyanka Chopra, for whom this was also going to be a maiden production, not really taking off? Now these have been the recent rumors making the rounds about the two National Award winners who were set to collaborate on one of the most talked about and hyped films in the last couple of years. This, when the official announcement around the actual shooting schedule and supporting cast was never announced. The truth though, as is always the case when it comes to rumors, hearsay and speculations, is altogether different. "There have been many reports about why the film didn't take off, even though nothing has been official about that," says a source close to Madhur, "To say that he was charging an unreasonable amount of money to direct Madamjee is absolutely baseless,...

Sometime back the news that Priyanka Chopra would be turning producer captured headlines. In fact the actress was set to co-produce her first feature film, Madamji in collaboration with an international production house. For the same it was also reported that Madhur Bhandarkar best known for his films like Chandini Bar, Page 3, Fashion and Heroine had been roped in to helm the project. However it seems that things have gone awry with Madhur being dropped from the project, for reasons best known to the producers. However divulging the reason behind Madhur's exit from the project a source says, "Madhur asked for a whopping Rs. 5 crores as his fees to direct the film. Such an amount, especially after the Heroine debacle and the fact that he is making Calendar Girls which is not what we call an A-list movie didn't make sense. The studio that will be collaborating with PC for the film,...

Filmmakers Madhur Bhandarkar and Navdeep Singh who were supposed to visit Pakistan to participate in Rafi Peer International Film Festival to be held from April 23 to April 25, has apparently been cancelled. In fact the duo who were initially expected to visit Pakistan, where their films Chandni Bar, Page 3, Corporate, Manorama Six Feet Under and NH10 were going to be screened as part of a cultural exchange programme. Commenting on the cancellation of their visit, a source states that the stress between the two countries is the cause of cancellation. Especially after the Mumbai Terror attack suspect Lakhvi was released few days back, the authorities in Pakistan anticipated security issues and hence didn't give the permission for the event where people from India were going to be present. Apparently, Madhur and Navdeep were to be a part of the Rafi Peer International Film Festival, where Madhur was to be honored...

Today I’m going through the first issue of Ninjak, the latest installment of Valiant’s ‘Next’ branded titles, written by one of my favorite creators in comics, Matt Kindt, with art by Clay Mann and Butch Guice (on the back-up story). The first two issues of Imperium have been winners, and Divinity #1 is perhaps my favorite single Valiant issue yet, also written by Kindt. I know Ninjak probably doesn’t top many fan favorite lists of Valiant characters but I like the character a lot, and have fond memories of not only a great classic Valiant cameo 1st appearance, but also beautiful art by Joe Quesada. I’m not going through ever page, just ones that catch my fancy.

From giving a sneak peek into the glamour world with Page 3, Fashion and Heroine to revealing the dark world behind poverty and its nexus with crime in films like Chandni Bar and Traffic Signal, Madhur Bhandarkar normally likes to portray the truth amidst superficial societies and shallow relationships. Now, the filmmaker has decided to expose the life of models in his upcoming film Calendar Girls. The filmmaker not only likes to deal with such topics but he also unabashedly likes to express his opinions on matters and the recent one was when he extended his support towards colleague and director Anurag Kashyap in his battle with the Censor Board for anti-smoking warnings. Both filmmakers were of the opinion that the anti-smoking disclaimer which is often shown during a smoking sequence in the film is not necessary. However, the Censor Board has been adamant in its decision and recently even...

Sonic Boom #3: “Hammer-Spaced”

Published by Archie Coimcs

Archie has created an interesting occurrence in their latest issue of Sonic Boom: an easy to follow continuity. Something that happens in a previous work leads into the next, and considering the quality of the stories in the Sonic video games, this is a good thing.
During the conclusion of the Issue #2 story, “Knuckleduster”, Amy Rose finds that her hammer has turned up missing. Normally, this would be a normal locate and fetch scenario, except for one crucial thing: Never in any of the Sonic media has Amy lost her Piko-Piko hammer. This weapon is a massive part of her identity, as she realizes during her breakdown on the first couple of pages. The title pokes fun at this occurrence, as to this day,...

He will go to any lengths to safeguard his loved ones," says a family friend. Initially, Ayesha Shroff had decided to let the law take its course regarding the money that Saahil allegedly owes her. National award winning author and critic, M.K. Raghavendra’s new book “The Politics of Hindi Cinema in the New Millennium: Bollywood and the Anglophone Indian Nation”, published by the Oxford University Press, has just been released.
From The Adulterous Woman (Jism to Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna) and The Youth Film as Dissent (Rang de Basanti and the Political Class) to Thieves like Us (Enterprise in Bunty Aur Babli, Dhoom 2, Guru) and The Reservations of Middle-Class Concern (Page 3, Corporate, Traffic Signal and Fashion); the book interprets 28 recent Hindi films in the light of political developments of the last decade and the emergence of a new ‘Anglophone Indian Nation’.
DearCinema speaks with the author:
Hindi cinema – which was once very moral – changes with self interest gaining ground – shown as aspiration. Secondly, there is an increasing endorsement of criminality as a way to advance oneself. Thirdly, it is as if the...

Pre-credit warning. I'm going to ignore these live segments, if you don't mind. This recap is already going to be horribly long if I cover the two-hour episode. At least I get to fast-forward through the lengthy season-long recap. Also, this recap is so darned long that I had to paginate it. I won't be insulted if you just skip to Page 3 for the results and my Bottom Lines... Pre-credit sequence. "Nice Tribal, guys. That's one for the books," Spencer observes after the Trish vote-out. But the big question is immediately raised: Why did Tony vote for his former ally? Tony explains that it was strategy and he didn't feel good about it, but he couldn't take somebody as well-liked as Trish to the end. "I feel horrible about it, but I feel like it was the most strategic move for me to make," Tony says. I guess I can buy that.

Natchez, Mississippi. It's mid-December on the Mississippi set of "Get On Up" and it's possible that the hardest working man in show business is the young actor playing The Hardest Working Man in Show Business. We're between shots in a scene recreating James Brown and The Famous Flames' iconic performance in the concert film "T.A.M.I. Show" and everything is resetting. For Chadwick Boseman, though, there's no such thing as a reset. The cameras may not be rolling, but Boseman's feet keep shuffling across the shiny green linoleum of the Natchez Auditorium stage, which is standing in for the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. He only pauses to run over to the monitor to see how his footwork looks, but then he returns to the stage, dancing his way there and back. Chadwick Boseman has become something of a perpetual motion machine, but if you watch old videos of James Brown,...

Calgary - It's mid-March and they're having a heatwave on the set of FX's "Fargo." According to a nearby thermometer, the temperature is 27 degrees and with the sun already beating down, there's a good chance that things could get above freezing in Minnesota-by-way-of-Alberta. This is cause for celebration and nearly everybody is behaving as if summer has arrived. The assistant director is walking around the parking lot set in short-sleeves, even as two members of the crew are shoveling snow for the backdrop to the next scene. In truth, though, things have become so mild on the "Fargo" set that they've run out of actual fresh snow and they're using pristine white stunt-snow delivered via truck. Although all of the "Fargo" actors have their own nightmare stories about shooting in sub-zero temperatures brought about by the polar vortex, on this morning, the stars are actually having makeup applied to...

Calgary - As pages go, Warren Littlefield is slightly overqualified. The Brandon Tartikoff protege spent 20 years as an executive at NBC, cultivating in a '90s run as NBC Entertainment President a gig that was, at times, rather wildly successful. On this March day in Calgary, though, Littlefield is serving as a tour-guide for a group of reporters visiting the set of his FX limited series "Fargo." Just a 10 minute drive from downtown Calgary, we've left the urban center behind and we're at a facility that is doubling for the Bemidji Police Department, as well as several other rural Minnesota hubs. Depending on which way you wander, there are interrogation rooms, a main squad area, portions of a local hospital and a middle school cafeteria, in which we're conducting most of our interviews next to a fine piece of juvenile art that has nothing to do with "Fargo," but I'm including it anyway.

Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Everton on Saturday was the deserved result of a dominant team’s battling performance, fighting to victory against an opponent determined to sit the game out for a point.
Or at least, that’s the narrative Jose Mourinho would like you to believe.
The truth is that Chelsea were lacklustre for large stretches of the game, creating little against Everton’s outstandingly organised defence and needing Petr Cech to be at his best against several dangerous counter-attacks. Mourinho certainly deserves enormous credit for instilling his team with a never-say-die work ethic and greater defensive discipline than the schizophrenic Chelsea sides from virtually every season since the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, but while the Blues remain difficult to beat, there is an increasingly strong sense that they are altogether less confident in their attacking play and opponents are wising up to them.

I know that the Sundance Film Festival ended over a week ago, but in the six days I was at Sundance (and on screeners in the days before), I saw 25 movies. I wrote full reviews for 13 of them. My Full Sundance reviews: 'The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz' "The Overnighters" "Rudderless" "Fed Up" "Marmato" "Love Child" "Land Ho!" "The Voices" "Happy Valley" "My Prairie Home" "Life Itself" "Mitt" "Web Junkie" But that left 12 movies that I just didn't have the time to write my usual 1000-to-1750 words on. Since getting back from Park City, I've been slowly working my way through capsule reviews for those 12 movies. These are roughly the length of my Take Me To The Pilots entries, which means that in this format, people are going to complain about all of the text and the lack of paragraphs. Sorry. Because I'm just one part of HitFix's awesome Sundance team,...
