Jonathan Wolf of IFTA spent an hour discussing IFTA and AFM with me and Roberta Braum, the Product Manager of IMDb Pro discussing the Independent Film And Television Alliance's activities. His ending words are worth repeating here. His definition of an independent film differs somewhat from that of Film Independent (Find) as shown when he cites 'Million Dollar Baby', a $30 million dollar budgeted feature financed by the international sales agent Lakeshore and licensed domestically to Warner Bros. which was not eligible for a Spirit Award in 2004 and 'Sideways', a $16 million dollar budgeted feature financed by Fox Searchlight and eligible for the Film Independent Spirit Award in 2004. An independent film, as defined by IFTA is one that is financed completely without major studio backing. Also worth noting is that Sunday during the American Film Market Jonathan will address the first time attendees at AFM. If you miss it this year, be sure to catch it next year!
