Decent!
ashleybrownmedia12 July 2013
I had no expectations for this, but it definitely holds your attention for its (short) running time, and there are definitely a few laughs along the way. While things do get a bit farcical at times it provides a rewarding experience if you can look past it.

Basically Martin Freeman plays a cynical TV producer who lives with a bizarre, French artist called Bob. One day he heads out and leaves Bob to look after the house, and speak to some estate agents who are coming round to price the place up. However a local gangster, along with an American 'connection' need to use the toilet and end up holding them all hostage while one of them gets the runs. No, seriously - that is the plot!

Change the poster please...

Warning: Spoilers
Martin Freeman plays an aspiring screenwriter, but to pursue his dreams, he needs to sell his house in order to fund them.

Called in to work urgently, he asks his unreliable flatmate to show realtors around to value the house.

Dyer plays another cockney wideboy, who has to escort an associate to the airport. The associate becomes sick, and they stop off at a house so he can be ill.

It's Freemans house, and a quick pit stop becomes a siege...

When I first saw this film advertised, I was expecting some sort of comedy where freeman finds out that his flatmate (Dyer) was an assassin.

The Poster for this is very deceptive, as the stars do not share one scene together.

Other than that, it's pretty throwaway stuff, with an ironic voice-over, Freeman doing his best Tim from the office impression, and Dyer being Dyer.

Its reminiscent of a seventies sitcom, and although its nothing new, and never once funny, it passes the time well enough

All Together Rubbish
mrsTrellis-211 December 2007
Almost from the word go this film is poor and lacking conviction but then again most people would struggle to show commitment to a script as uninspiring as this. The dialogue really does not flow and sometimes as in this case more is less (or should have been). This is also backed-up by odd scenes (e.g. the Cemetry slow-motion walk) that you think might lead somewhere but only seem to waste a few more seconds of your life.

The plot is a strange combination of gangster / situation comedy which I am sure seemed a good idea at the time but if ever there was a case for someone needing to be honest with the scriptwriter then here was it.

Martin Freeman is okay but then he seems to have one character which always plays so I am beginning to wonder if he was given a script or just filmed and told to react as normal.

Finally - humour. This reminds me of the 'Python (I think) quote about Shakespere, of his 'comedies' - If he had meant it to be humorous he would have put a joke in it. Well I didn't see one.

Don't waste your time - I did because I was watching it with a friend and kept hoping that it was going to get better.

It didn't.

not as good as i hoped
Oh dear. good cast, but to write and direct is an art and to write wit and direct wit is a bit of a task. Even doing good comedy you have to get the timing and moment right. Im not putting it all down there were parts where i laughed loud but that was at very few times. The main focus to me was on the fast free flowing dialogue, that made some people in the film annoying. It may sound great while reading the script in your head but getting that out and to the camera is a different task. And the hand held camera work does give energy to few parts of the film. Overall direction was good but the script was not all that to me, but I'm sure you was reading the script in your head it would sound good. Sorry.

Warning: Spoilers
It pains me to write such a scathing review but by not doing so I'm simply encouraging these people. First off, just because a film is made on a small budget does not automatically make it good nor endearing. In fact in this case, the small budget is probably the films sole achievement in that it prevented large sums of money from being squandered on a one legged race horse with the shits. Have you ever seen a comedy at the theatre? Ever heard people laugh and thought "what the dickens are you on"? Well even these twats weren't laughing. Things got so bad by mid way my cat took his first ever bath. This is not film, this is children....no monkeys making images that leave you feeling like moving to France. Got to go, there's a clown at my door.............

Quite possibly one of the worst movies I have seen...

Warning: Spoilers
I hate to be the one to rain on a parade (even a small one like this) but from the very first scene, you could tell this film was going to be absolute shite. Its a shame really, as I quite like Martin Freeman and Danny dyer. I was intrigued as to how they would mix in a film together, but to my dismay, they did not even have a scene together!! I think I need to repeat this - The two lead actors (who stand side by side on the advertisement posters and DVD covers) did not have one scene together!!!! They did not speak to each other and never appeared on screen at the same time. Just about sums up this poor excuse for a movie. False advertisement.

The dialogue was painful, every single character in the movie was unrealistic, and un-human like. The scenarios were far fetched, the plot was crap, the jokes were thin, Freeman tried too hard to be funny (and played a poor mans Tim from The office), nobody was likable, and worst of all, some of the characters were so annoying that it almost drove me to switch off, as I couldn't bear to watch, or listen to them any longer.

This low budget stinker was an epic fail. Even Danny Dyer couldn't inject some humour and charm into this, but bless, he tried. What a waste of time.

How anybody could rate this movie as 'ten stars' is beyond me. Ten Stars? Seriously? Come on....I won't even give some of the greats ten stars, as ten stars implies that a movie was perfect. This film was far from perfect, almost the opposite, meaning that it was almost completely dire throughout.

Watch it if you like, but if you've seen a lot of movies, and watched a lot of great movies, your review will probably similar to mine.

I liked it
marcjajara14 August 2007
This little film has some terrific dialogue. It's deceptively smart and really proper rather than pretend funny which I find most things i watch. Freeman is excellent as usual as other lots of the other actors who I was less familiar with. Very hectic and pretty short but mainly it's the amount of big laughs that really grabbed me. Read some pretty negative reviews which was odd. Maybe cos a least two of the characters are quite scathing with swipes about some British TV and film. Also much hatred of the cult of celebrity in particular and got flack for this I think. Anyway if you're into crash bang wallop pictures don't bother with this. It's very dialogue-heavy, little 'action' but lots of laughs. I would say its limitations are obvious however and if watching truly low-budget films ain't for you don't bother.

Funny film, another good British film to add to my collection.
markjaxson14 October 2007
This was a very funny film, all the actors fit their roles very well, i even enjoyed the French guy, he made added a lot of funny scenes to the film.

Although its nowhere near as good as Shaun of the dead or Human Traffic, it is a decent film and I'm glad other people have left good comments about it because otherwise i would not have watched this film because of the bad comments it receive but I'm glad i did get to see this film.

Its quite a short film, 1hr 15mins but its well worth seeing.

We need to support the British film industry so i will purchase this when its available on DVD.

Why hasn't this film been everywhere?
allparty21 May 2007
I hadn't seen or heard anything about this film. I got roped along. But must say I thought it was funny. It just made me smile. A lot.

Looked it up when I got home and it's only on in a few places!!?? But why? I suppose it might come across as being too smart/cynical which may account for some of the angry reviews I saw. But it is full of great lines and actually really warm and cheerful if you watch it all and take it in.

I don't claim to be an expert but to me this was a good one. A really good one. It's not on at the cinema I saw it at anymore - after one week. So maybe I'm in the minority!

Watch it even if it was but for the wonderful soundtrack
Equinox2311 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I can imagine that some people might be put off by the film's ironic attitude towards the media and gangster movies. Maybe it takes a spitefully uncommon sense of humour to go along with the teasing and (self-) depreciative mood that at times is exposed. The opening scene already dwells on this attitude, when exactly those things are performed that the lead character, a scriptwriter and would be writer, tells us he would never do in a movie. All the while you will get off comments that either give a deeper "truth" to or foil what you are seeing, and almost every aspect of modern culture is made fun of: TV, modern art (I believe Velibor Topic's character is not French like some reviewer said, but rather ex-Yugoslavian - hence his comment that it would be easy for him to get corpses in his home country, I simply cannot imagine that of France ;)), the close relations between the USA and the UK, religion, Batman, French movies etc.

The real highlight of the movie is the wonderful soundtrack, music you are not likely to hear in other movies and I must admit that it incited me to look for at least digital copies.

BTW Danny Dyer and Martin Freeman do get a scene together but one of them is no longer able to talk.

Excellent, yet unusual comedy
kkempton-111 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Was a flip between this and 28 weeks later. Glad I made the decision to see this film. It felt rough along the edges, and there was a small period of time when I wondered if this was to be a chuckle once film. However, as the story built it simply got funnier. The storyline was so obscure and unusual that it felt fresh, and original, even if it was a bit low budget. With an array of strange characters, A low grade "gangster", a crazy screwed up TV presenter and even a clown, this films suited to those people that need a laugh, and don't expect a big budget Mel Gibson thriller. Think of this film as a low budget Shaun of the Dead.

Totally original and very funny...
flixgirl15 May 2007
...that's what this film is. And yes, made for peanuts which apparently makes it open season for some film critics to attack it. Remember all the fuss about movies like Clerks and El Mariachi? Good grief 'The All Together' is funnier than the former and better looking than the latter! I love Martin Freeman but he's about the fifth funniest character in this. It's packed with laughs and the dialogue is so memorable. So why isn't this movie getting the praise it deserves?

Anything new and different (that isn't a miserable worthy drama) gets savaged by the film geeks in this country. Don't believe these sad little men (as they all seem to be male). I've seen this twice now and both times the audience were loving it and at the end it got applause!

"All Together", I Thought It Was Worth It.
Kittiko19 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
My experience with obtaining and viewing this particular film was probably the most frustrating I ever had. I went through tons of websites until I finally came across a copy of the movie (ordered it from a UK site, and I live in the US); and once it finally got to me, I couldn't play it on my DVD player or computer and had to download a special kind of $50 software just to play this one DVD (it is a region-2 disc, and I live where region-1 discs can only be played). When all was said and done, I was close to pulling my hair out. But you know what? It was all worth it.

The main reason why I went through all the trouble to get this DVD was Corey Johnson. I am a big fan of him, and I really wanted to see this film. After I got past the Corey Johnson factor, I discovered just how clever and funny this film is.

Chris (Martin Freeman, another actor I really like) and Bob (Velibor Topic) are two housemates with drastically different personalities: Bob is artistic (in the taxidermy-sense) and carefree while Chris is uptight and misery-laden. After putting the house on the market, Chris is entrusting Bob to look after the house and let in real estate agents while he fills in for a sick employee at his television-show job. Meanwhile, we have celebrity-spotting Dennis (Danny Dyer) and the snappily-dressed but moody gangster Mr. Gaspardi (Corey Johnson), who are discussing business in Dennis's Mercedes when Gaspardi falls ill from his dinner the night before. Gaspardi's nausea turns to bathroom panic, and the car pulls over in front of Chris's place. Dennis and Gaspardi entreat entrance into the house so Gaspardi doesn't explode from holding it all in, and Bob gladly obliges to let them in, mistaking them for realtors. What happens next is nothing short of a crazy situation, as ultra-cool Dennis (or so he thinks of himself) turns his gun on every person that comes into Chris's house, triggering a hostage crisis. The fact that at least 10 people end up in the home (and not all of them are realtors!) is enough to make your head spin from trying to keep up with everyone. It doesn't help to take it seriously either with Gaspardi humming to himself as he sits on the can.

So what did I love about this movie besides Corey Johnson and his neurotic Mr. Gaspardi? To begin with, I loved the other characters, especially Bob and his philosophically-challenged numbskull dialogue. Dyer is funny with his arrogantly gleeful Dennis, and you can't help but feel bad for Freeman's Chris after all he's gone through during the film. Supporting actors Jonathan Ryland (the Capital One guy!) and Charles Edwards are great in their own roles as two of the confused and highly-vocal real estate agents. The script's premise may sound a little simple at first, but it works out very nicely for each scene that it cuts to next. The music is awesome too; I personally loved each and every one of the songs used in this movie, and my taste in music is extremely picky.

From what I gather reading the other reviews of this movie, the reactions are mixed. And rightfully so, since I think everyone has their own taste in comedy and in what makes a good comedic premise. I personally thought it was a great comedy from start to finish, and that it's definitely worth a peek. My hope is that you'll have a better time locating and playing the DVD than I did! My grade: A, 10/10
