Hoosier History: The Truth Behind the Legend (2005)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Good look at the making of HOOSIERS not only tells us about the film but we also get to hear about basketball in Indiana as well as meet a few of the real life people whose experience is shown in the film. From the actual movie we get director David Anspauge, writer Angelo Pizzo, Gene Hackman, Dennis Hopper and Maris Valainis. The group talk about the early stages of the production, filming various scenes and we also get an interesting story of how originally Jack Nicholson was attached to the lead role. We learn that both the writer and director had this story in their mind for many years and we get to hear about how it finally got produced. Both Hackman and Hopper seem to have questioned what type of movie they were making even though they both now look back on it as something important. Both of them seem shocked that so many people were effected by the movie and want to talk to them about it. Not only do we hear from the cast and crew but there are also several members of the real team that comment on the movie and what it was really like back then. NBA star Reggie Miller, former Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle and Purdue coach Gene Keady also offer up some opinions on the film as well as what basketball means to the state. Of course, at just under 30-minutes there's no doubt that something longer and more detailed would have been nice but what we get is still worth viewing and especially for fans of the film.
