Fear begins with the sound of a tape being placed in a Vcr followed by extremely glitchy footage of author Rom Jennings being interviewed about his upcoming book, a non-fiction work on the mythology surrounding fear. Among other things, he mentions needing to take a research trip to a particular area in Northern California.
That location is the Strawberry Lodge and Rom is bringing his girlfriend Bianca on the trip with plans to propose to her. He’s also invited his agent, Michael and some friends including Serena, Lou, Benny, Kim and married couple Russ and Meg to join them.

How seriously do you think I take Halloween? Well, I’m fairly frickin’ anal retentive anyway, so I need to book my viewing in advance. I mean I’ll deviate from my itinerary, but I at least need a plan. I can’t be the only one out there with a stick up his ass. So this October/Halloween Season I figured we needed a little guidance. There’s too many damn channels on the cable box, no horror hosts and shit for advertising. So let me be your TV Guide… Keeper.
We won’t touch on everything and I’m sure new programming will come up as October gets itself moving. I’ll throw an update out there from time to time if a special is airing or a new programming line up is discovered, uncovered, revealed or undead. Yes, this is for cable or dish. Network TV will...

Last week I started seeing one sheets on the street and on the side of buses for this Saw/Hostel rip off horror film Chain Letter and really paid no attention until I noticed the name of the director - Deon Taylor. Hmmm… I said to myself. Why that has to be a brother. C’mon let’s be honest. When was last time you saw a white guy with the name Deon?
So I looked him up and he definitely is a brother all right. Turns out that Taylor, who’s based in Sacramento, was a former professional basketball player in Europe who always wanted to direct movies and claims he learned how by watching those behind-the-scenes bonus extra documentaries on DVDs while playing in Europe. (Right now I can hear former college film students deep in debt now working as waiters collapsing to the ground after reading that...

It’s not often we write articles about award-winning performers here on Dread Central, which makes this all the more exciting for yours truly. This past weekend Deon Taylor (Dead Tone, Chain Letter) invited Dread Central exclusively out to his set in Los Angeles to give us a look at the revamping of his Night Tales (previously Nite Tales) brand of horror.
Previously hosted by everyone’s favorite hip-hop hype man Flavor Flav, the new Night Tales will be hosted by Stacey Dash (Clueless) as a vampiress, demonstrating a new, serious and sexy direction for both the television series as well as the feature film.
In addition to the new direction of Night Tales, Taylor also introduced us to his brand new producing partner, Oscar and Grammy Award winner Jamie Foxx. The collaboration marks Foxx’s first true foray into the horror genre, something that excites the renowned actor greatly.

If Flava Flav welcoming you to a horror movie doesn’t clue you in that it’s going to be god awful, what will? That’s not rhetorical. If you know, sound off below. As it stands, Dead Tone is a joke. An actual joke. I think. Not like everything is so laughably bad it’s funny (which it is), but that the film never had any intention of being scary. Slightly gruesome though it is, everything is conceived so horribly and with such a cliched, amateurish air that Dead Tone never even has a chance to be creepy. It’s a joke. It has to be.
It starts with a slumber party. Harmless fun. The adults party in the living room (it almost seems like they night be swingers) as the kids are assumedly asleep in the bedroom. But they’re not sleeping. Oh no. For you see, mischievous children that they are,...

Noah Segan may not be a household name quite yet, but if his career keeps moving at the breakneck pace he enjoyed over the last several years, it’s only a matter of time before the word is out on this genre up-and-comer.
This week, Segan is celebrating another milestone in his career: the DVD release of Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (review here). Dread Central decided to catch up with the young actor to talk about the film, as well as some of his upcoming projects including the dark comedy All About Evil and Deon Taylor’s gritty indie horror flick Chain Letter.
After learning at the start of the interview that Segan was a huge horror fan with an American Cinema flavor to it, I asked the actor what he thought of Eli Roth’s original Cabin Fever which paid homage to its American horror predecessors and his...

I had the pleasure of first meeting Deon Taylor during my set visit for Dark Christmas in Sacramento in December, 2009. What struck me initially is that the writer/director/producer was a lot like this scribe, just an all-around movie geek with a love for the horror genre.
What separates us, though, is the fact that Taylor, who previously worked in many different facets of the entertainment industry, is the head of Deon Taylor Enterprises, a cutting edge studio that has worked with many of the genre's most talented players (Tony Todd, Rutger Hauer, Betsy Russell, Keith David, and Gary Busey) while focusing on bringing new talent into the fold (Nikki Reed, Noah Segan, and Sandra McCoy).
Not wanting to work on anyone else’s terms, Taylor decided that instead of working from La like many independent filmmakers do, he would set up shop in Sacramento, where his main office and soundstage are both located.

A couple of flicks we've been talking about for quite some time are finally hitting store shelves this week including the animated Dante's Inferno, the long-awaited Dead Tone (formerly known as 7eventy 5ive) from directors Brian Hooks and Deon Taylor, and the three-disc exploitation extravaganza known as Shock Festival from Stephen Romano (with a couple of commentaries from our own Uncle Creepy).
Rounding out the list are two volumes of Bad Girls of Film Noir, some unknown quantities such as 9 Lives of Mara and Butchered, the provocative and stylized Bronson, a Blu-ray release of Running Man, and the 1999 "Masterpiece Mystery" thriller series Second Sight starring Clive Owen. Okay, technically those last two aren't straight horror, but with all the Arnold and Clive fans we have on the site, I figured enough people would want to know about them that they warranted inclusion.

It’s not often that you get an opportunity to talk extensively with both Bud Bundy and the Candyman all in one day. But that was just one of the treats from this writer’s visit to the set of Dark Christmas, which appropriately lensed last week in Sacramento.
Starring David Faustino as a darkly comedic version of himself looking to reinvent his public persona based on the success of his vindictive reality show called "Clown’d", Dark Christmas is one part of the next upcoming Nite Tales horror anthology from writer/director Deon Taylor.
Taylor’s first Nite Tales feature film anthology debuted in 2008, with a subsequent TV series spin-off that started in 2009. Dark Christmas also stars Tony Todd (interview here), April Scott, Miguel Nunez, Tiny Lister and former NFL star Ephraim Salaam.
While on set, this writer sat down with Taylor, Faustino, and Todd to discuss the details...

If Tyler Perry had a horror counterpart, his name would be Deon Taylor. The man knows his audience and churns out films non-stop. Taylor, who gave us Nite Tales (an urban horror anthology with Flavor Flav), the upcoming Nite Tales 2 and Chain Letter shepherded a new thriller this year called Dead Tone . Co-directed by and starring Brian Hooks (Taylor also directs), the premise is simple: College kids start a prank phone call game and invite evil to f**k with their lives. Josh Hammond ( Jeepers Creepers 2 ) co-stars as does...Rutger Hauer. We've got the trailer below. As you'll see, it's part of the Nite Tales brand. Dead Tone arrives on DVD February 9 from Screen Media.

I'm one of the many out there who were surprised by Deon Taylor's horror anthology Nite Tales (review here). Despite a few technical hiccups and a truly wretched performance from Flava Flav, the flick more than did its thing as far as being a competent little spooker. We just got word that Taylor's ready to start in on his latest flick -- Dark Christmas.
While details are sparse, we do know that the film goes into production on December 15th in Sacramento, California, with Taylor once again at the directorial helm. Ever see a little anthology film called Nite Tales? It was the one that starred Flava Flav introducing tales of carnage Crypt Keeper style. Though Flav nearly crippled the movie (boy did he come close), what made it work was the passion of director Deon Taylor. We've got the skinny on another project from Taylor that's been kicking around for a while now.
According to Screen Daily Screen Media Films has struck a distribution partnership with Deon Taylor Enterprises/Vista Taylor for the thriller Dead Tone, which stars Rutger Hauer, Jud Tylor, Antwon Tanner, and Brian Hooks (who co-directed) and was formerly known as 7eventy 5ive.
Based on real events (and what isn't nowadays?), Dead Tone is about college students whose prank phone calls target the wrong person, a madman who turns on them. Look for the film in select cities in the Us starting September 3rd.
