On Sunday's The Chris Matthews Show , the panel guests discussed Congress' inability to pass new gun laws and just how much blame President Barack Obama deserves for that failure. Some of the panelists agreed that Obama and his administration have a chronic communications problem, but former CBS News anchor Dan Rather defended the president. He said that the Obama's critics who “want to cut his heart out and throw his liver to the dogs” make it difficult for the president to work with them.

Chris Matthews has re-upped with MSNBC, signing a new long-term deal that will keep him at the network into the next presidential election. But while he’ll stay put at 5 and 7 p.m. on MSNBC, the 67-year-old will retire from his syndicated Sunday show in July. In a lengthy statement, Matthews thanked Nancy Nathan, his executive producer of The Chris Matthews Show, which in many markets airs before NBC’s Meet the Press. “For more than a decade, she and her team have allowed me to offer great Sunday morning television," wrote Matthews. Let's face it, if your job involves talking about politics, and the biggest news story you have to talk about is a nonpolitical one, you're probably going to try and find a way to give said event some political context. But you're going to make a lot of people uncomfortable when you take a horrible shooting incident and ask what impact it will have on the presidential race. Which is pretty much what everyone on The Chris Matthews Show did today for about two minutes, with Chuck Todd filling in for Chris Matthews.

At this point, the chances of "The Artist" seeing a big win at the Oscars far outweighs that of Mitt Romney's hopes during the Gop race. But that isn't going to stop "The Chris Matthews Show" from producing a fake trailer comparing Romney to the star of "The Artist," whose foray into speaking in public doesn't quite work the way he hoped.
Frankly, we didn't even know that "The Chris Matthews Show," which unlike its host's other show "Hardball" usually features more thoughtful political discussion, ever produced comedy bits like this one. But when they put the bouncy "Artist" music in behind a black-and-white Mitt waving to the crowd, pointing out that when you ignore what comes out of his mouth, he looks like a president, it's eerily reminiscent of Jean Duuardin's overly confident silent film era star.
Even if Mitt isn't successful in the Gop contest this year,...

Today's edition of The Chris Matthews Show featured a small little awards ceremony to honor the most important political moments of the year. Chris Matthews dedicated the first award to President Obama for his "Best Move" of the year. The nominees for the category were the death of Osama bin Laden, the Libyan invasion, the fulfilled promise to withdraw from Iraq, and his unifying speech to the nation following the Arizona shootings and critical injury of Gabrielle Giffords.

Andrew Sullivan spent a good deal of his morning on television today, following up an appearance on The Chris Matthews Show with an extended interview on Reliable Sources, where the blogger discussed moderate conservatism and his increased alienation from the American right with Howard Kurtz. Sullivan insisted that, despite praising President Obama and, on some issues, falling in the Ezra Klein/Thomas Friedman column, he was still a true conservative.

Dan Rather made a rather surprising statement on The Chris Matthews Show today when he said that one of the driving forces behind the Occupy Wall Street protests "is a woman operating out of her apartment in New York." Rather argued earlier on the show that the Occupy Wall Street protests were a "mirror image" of the Tea Party protests, or at least have the potential to be.

Chris Matthews today wondered how President Obama could get reelected with such high unemployment numbers to deal with. He brought up figures during the presidencies of Fdr and Ronald Reagan, both of whom were nevertheless reelected. Matthews consulted the "Matthews Meter," twelve of The Chris Matthews Show's regular panelists, and all but one of them agreed the president could be reelected even if unemployment stands at 8.5 percent.

On Sunday morning's The Chris Matthews Show, host Chris Matthews asked his panel to debate Time Magazine's recent cover story on the existence of Hell. This isn't new territory for Time, who drummed up controversy (and sales) by asking "Is God Dead?" in 1966, and as panelist Becky Quick notes, has revisited the topic many times. Veering off-topic somewhat, Matthews asked "Why does the right wing love the Old Testament so much?"...

On Sunday Morning's The Chris Matthews Show, panelist Cynthia Tucker of the Atlanta Journal Constitution may have coined a phrase that will help to define the 2012 Republican presidential field. Speaking about the unlikelihood of a run by Gov. Chris Christie (R-nj), Tucker said that the rising Gop star would be unwilling to pay the Republican "crazy tax" of pandering to the likes of the "Birthers" (and their Pied Dog-whistlers like Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin), and denying science. Ozzy Osborne, we've got the DNC on line 1.

Hello, Zoners! Welcome to a new week of wonderfulness. There’s a lot of politics coming to the ‘Colbert Report’, wth Cornel West, Ron Reagan, and Chris Matthews all slated to visit; Ms. Turkle will bring science, psychology, and technology to the mix and she is the sole guest never to have previously appeared on either The Daily Show or the Report. I had fun looking back at the old videos, and I hope you will too.

How does our online communication affect the way we relate to each other in real life? Are today’s youngsters losing the ability to deal with each other face to face? How can living in a cyberworld help and harm us? Those are just a few of the questions tacked by eminent sociologist and author Sherry Turkle. On The Chris Matthews Show, Chris Matthews hosted a discussion about President Obama's biggest challenge in the year ahead. Most agreed that it would be best politically for Obama to completely forget about Congressional Democrats and instead focus on winning back independents, something that The Atlantic editor and blogger Andrew Sullivan thought would be easy for Obama because that is the type of "president he wants to be."...

During a segment on this morning's The Chris Matthews Show, host Chris Matthews asked his panel to hand out year-end awards. Most of the broadcast was a fun discussion with good-natured praise and jabs for the year's most notorious political celebrities. However, for the category of who demonstrated the biggest "Chutzpah" of the year, one nominee had guest Joe Klein nearly foaming at the mouth with anger.

New York -- MSNBC may find out soon whether "Hardball" host Chris Matthews returns to the channel, which has been invigorated in the ratings.
Matthews is said to be considering an offer from NBC to remain as host of "Hardball," a job he's held for more than a decade, or to return to his native Pennsylvania to run for the U.S. Senate against Gop incumbent Arlen Specter.
There are indications that a decision could come soon, sometime before Inaugural Day. But MSNBC president Phil Griffin declined late last week to say whether that's true or not.
"I've talked to Chris. I think he's going to be here for a long time," Griffin said. "I want him to be here for a long time." Griffin said that there would be "clarity" soon.
Matthews through a spokesman declined an interview. The 63-year-old Matthews is believed to make roughly $5 million a year...
