Early Smurfs comics depicted harmful behaviors like drinking and smoking, a stark contrast to their family-friendly image today. Smurfette's original storyline was problematic, portraying her as a creation of Gargamel for male entertainment. The Smurfs have delved into dark themes, including a disturbing Unicef commercial and a zombie attack episode, offering surprising social commentary.
The dark history of The Smurfs offers some surprisingly bizarre and sinister insights into the children's entertainment icons. The Smurfs, a Belgian comic franchise created in 1958 by the comic artist Pierre Culliford, working under the pen name Peyo, has captivated children and adults since its inception. The long-running franchise includes a comic strip, kids' toys, collectibles, television shows, countless parodies, and three major motion pictures from Sony Entertainment, not to mention the animated feature films from the '60s and '70s. The little blue forest dwellers and their adventures, language, and villains have permeated popular culture.

Hanna-Barbera's iconic cartoons span from delightful classics like Scooby-Doo to forgettable titles like Magilla Gorilla. The cultural impact of Hanna-Barbera's cartoons is key when valuing each show, from the popular Yogi Bear to lesser-known characters like Magilla Gorilla. Characters like Scooby-Doo and Tom & Jerry are deeply rooted in pop culture, while others like Magilla Gorilla haven't had the same lasting impact.
From Scooby-Doo to Superfriends, the Hanna-Barbera animation studio developed some of the most iconic cartoons of all time, though they range significantly in quality. William Hannah and Joseph Barbera were animators initially known for co-creating Tom & Jerry in the 1940s. After running their show for nearly 20 years and developing dozens of unforgettable shorts with the famous cat and mouse duo, the pair set out to establish their own production company, Hanna-Barbera.

Sofia Vergara gives a commanding performance as Griselda Blanco, the powerful and ruthless druglord who rises to prominence in Miami. The supporting cast of characters, including Alberto Guerra as Dario Sepulveda and Martin Rodriguez as Jorge "Rivi" Ayala-Rivera, bring depth and authenticity to the miniseries. Griselda is a gripping tale of domestic survival, as Griselda's illegal business puts her family and loved ones in danger while her cocaine empire grows.
Created by the same team behind Narcos, Griselda is a Netflix miniseries that debuted on Jan. 25, 2024, and instantly shot to the top of the most viewed TV shows. Hanna-Barbera's sci-fi sitcom "The Jetsons" debuted in 1962, only two years after the studio had a major hit with "The Flintstones". The logic behind "The Jetsons" seemed to be that if one show could work in the distant past, then a very similar show ought to work in the distant future. "The Jetsons" was set in the far-off future year of 2062, where Earth's citizens have access to flying cars, robot maids, and various other bizarro technologies the mind could fathom. Despite civilization's advances, however, George Jetson (George O'Hanlon) was still a hollowed-out salaryman in the unhappy employ of a soulless widget-making corporation. His wife Jane (Penny Singleton) was a housewife. The dull, middle-class values of the 1950s, it seems, would resurge 90 years later.
The series ran only for one 24-episode season and was canceled in 1963. It left a sizable footprint, however, and was revived for two more seasons in 1985.

Franco-Belgian comics are considered a respectable art form in France and Belgium, ingrained in their culture and on par with Hollywood celebrities. The modern Bande Dessinée movement originated from satirical comics in the 19th century, evolving to focus on culture and establishing a connection with readers. The iconic comic series The Adventures of Tintin by Hergé served as a catalyst for the modern Bd movement, uniting French and Belgian culture through colorful characters and adventurous storytelling.
The comic medium is fairly well-regarded in countless countries as a different method of storytelling, but France and Belgium have become particularly well-known for having a greater respect for comics. While the U.S. gets most of its biggest stories from publishers such as Marvel and DC, manga in Japan has become a major part of the culture with countless volumes releasing every year. As the year winds down, it’s time to look back at Netflix’s biggest hits, and today, we begin by looking into what kids’ TV shows picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s over the past 12 months.
This list is compiled using FlixPatrol data collected from the daily top 10s on Netflix from over 80 countries around the globe. They assign points and values to each title that gets featured on any day. Their data isn’t perfect as their method doesn’t quite fully capture the complexity of viewership data, such as total watch time, repeat viewings, or demographic details of the audience. Also worth noting is that Netflix changed up its top 10 metrics midway through the year to favor views over pure viewing hours. That said, their data provides a pretty accurate snapshot of what performed best over a long period.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade packed a punch for NBC in its 99th edition. The New York holiday tradition delivered a record audience of 28.5 million viewers across airings Thursday on the network and its streaming sibling Peacock.
In a good sign of the parade’s status as an American institution, more than two-thirds of that audience (22.3 million) came from the live linear telecast on NBC from 8:30 a.m. to noon Et and live streams on Peacock. A little more than 5 million viewers watched a repeat telecast from 2-5 p.m. Et on NBC and on-demand streams via Peacock.
All told across both platforms, viewership was up 6% from last year’s parade in viewers and the adults 18-49 demographic, where it hit a 7.2 rating. In the key demo, live viewing of the parade delivered a 5.3 rating in the demo. That’s a solid NFL-level turnout for a live telecast.

The show’s star-studded ensemble is one of its greatest charms, though the impulse to match an instantly recognizable voice with their celebrity counterpart occasionally proves distracting. One actor who makes his debut in Invincible season 2, episode 3, "This Missive, This Machination!" may not be a household name, but his voice is known to millions after a career voicing iconic characters.

Sony Pictures Animation has had a pretty checkered past, with critical reception to their films ranging from wild lows to impressive heights. Recently, however, the studio seems to be hitting a pretty stable stride, becoming a studio that other Western animation studios could learn a thing or two from. Audiences have certainly received endless entertainment from their most recent projects, from Hotel Transylvania to the Spider-Verse trilogy.
Sony Pictures Animation feels like a place that's willing to let creative minds celebrate art for art’s sake, to have more room for fun and freedom to pursue their art. Many artists and animators would love their own shot at making something memorable, fresh, and fun for us to fall in love with. Sony has shown us that when that freedom is given, audiences end up with unique, visually spectacular, and emotionally heartfelt rollercoaster rides. It’s time for more Western studios...

The 1980s was a golden era for TV animation. It was the decade of Thundercats, Inspector Gadget, Transformers, Ducktales, The Smurfs, He-Man and The Masters of the Universe, Care Bears, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Yet arguably, the best of them all was The Real Ghostbusters.
The show arrived at a time when studios were eager to translate box office gold into something palatable for younger audiences. It didn’t always quite go to plan, of course, as short-lived and ill-advised animated incarnations of everything from Rambo to The Karate Kid can attest.
But The Real Ghostbusters was different, running for 140 episodes across seven seasons.

To talk about Peter Cullen's voice acting career is to take a trip through the last five decades of mainstream U.S. animation. The man has lent his voice to so many noteworthy cartoon series that it boggles the mind, including "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo," "The Smurfs," "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends," "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Muppet Babies," "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," and "Invincible." But one cannot even begin to do justice to his body of work without touching on the iconic character that he's voiced across multiple animated shows and feature films for nearly 40 years now. Truly, at this point, Cullen is all but synonymous with his onscreen counterpart: Eeyore.
After debuting as the Autobots' intrepid leader in "The Transformers" in 1984, Cullen took over voicing the most relatable resident of the Hundred Acre Wood from the late Ralph Wright (who voiced...

The Smurfs going to war in AI art is a jarring and unexpected concept, as their usual adventures are lighthearted and family-friendly. If a war movie were to be made about The Smurfs, it would involve them fighting enemies their own size and would have a darker tone. The franchise is likely to continue making comedic and family-oriented films, but the AI art of Smurfs at war proposes an intriguing and memorable concept.
Smurfs enter a war zone in bizarre AI art of The Smurfs, which sees the classic blue characters experiencing the action and aftermath of war. Storylines in the actual franchise tend to follow simple adventures, with the Smurfs occasionally defending themselves from outside forces. This is usually Gargamel, a wizard who wants to destroy the small blue creatures alongside his cat Azrael.
Now, BaxtheDestroyer has posted art of The Smurfs to the Midjourney subreddit, featuring the iconic creatures going to war.

It's been a rough year for DC, but Warner Bros. is looking to turn it around with "Blue Beetle." Starring Xolo Maridueña ("Cobra Kai") as Jamie Reyes, this represents the character's first trip to the big screen in live-action. It also shouldn't be lost on anyone that this movie was originally supposed to go directly to HBO Max (now just called Max) but was given a theatrical release instead. The early buzz has been largely positive, and this could serve as a late summer surprise for moviegoers. For those venturing to theaters to see what DC has to offer, we're here to give you a little help by letting you know what, if any, credits scenes are attached to the film, and how that will impact your viewing experience.
To be crystal clear, this is a spoiler-free guide. Proceed without fear as we're not here to spoil anything at all.

If there’s any late summer film that might be able to find a foothold at the box office amidst the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, it’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” a film that marks the beginning of a greater investment in theatrical animation for Paramount Pictures.
Made on a reported $70 million budget and with Seth Rogen attached as a writer-producer, “Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” marks the start of a new incarnation of the quartet of pizza-loving reptile warriors who have been reinvented in various films, comics and TV series since Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman first imagined them for a 1984 one-off comic spoofing Marvel heroes like Daredevil and the X-Men.

The late, great Paul Reubens completely changed the landscape of comedy with his character of Pee-wee Herman, becoming one of the handful of celebrities like Jim "Ernest P. Worrell" Varney, Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson, and Glenn "Divine" Milstead who become synonymous with their most famous roles. Honestly, there were probably a lot of people who learned of his passing at the same time they learned his actual name. Don't get me wrong, Pee-wee Herman is one of the greatest and most influential characters ever shown on screen and his hopeful embrace of the weird and creative has certainly made the world a better place. But Reubens was so much more than Pee-wee Herman and brought a number of other hilarious roles to life.

"Pee-wee's Playhouse" was a staple of television from 1986-1990, both for kids who loved the silly talking chair, puppets, and silly scenarios, and for adults who loved the tongue-in-cheek humor. Sadly, Paul Reubens, who hosted the show as Pee-wee Herman, has died at the age of 70. The beloved comedian had a huge career, including roles in "The Blacklist," "Portlandia," "The Smurfs," "Pushing Daisies," "Blow," and the movie "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," as well as a very meta appearance in "What We Do in the Shadows." Still, his Pee-wee Herman persona is what Reubens is best known for, returning to the role in 2016 in "Pee-wee's Big Holiday," which he also wrote and produced.
"Pee-wee's Playhouse" is remembered as being incredibly smart and innovative for a children's show and boasted some big acting names like S. Epatha Merkerson, Phil Hartman, and Laurence Fishburne. There were a lot of rather mature jokes in there,...

Check out the brain on Barbie! Sure, she’s just a doll, but that doesn’t mean she has to be an airhead. Therein lies “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig’s inspired, 21st-century solution to bringing one of America’s most iconic playthings to life on the big screen. Combine that with the casting of Margot Robbie in the title role, and “Barbie” is already starting out on the right, perfectly arched foot. So what if this high-concept comedy falls a bit flat in the final stretch?
Barbie’s strength as a brand comes from her aspirational appeal. While some have rightly criticized the doll for setting unrealistic beauty standards, Barbie also showed girls they can do and be anything, as different models have portrayed her as president, a rocket scientist, even trans. You know who else sets unrealistic beauty standards? Movie stars. Like Barbie, they serve as role models,...

Audiences are making it clear which superhero film they prefer at the box office right now, as Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has returned to the No. 1 spot in its fourth weekend in theaters while Warner Bros.’ “The Flash” has suffered a 72% second-weekend drop, the worst for the soon-to-be-finished DC Extended Universe.
“Across the Spider-Verse” earned $19.3 million this weekend, continuing its strong run as it passed $500 million in global grosses earlier this past week. With $317 million grossed domestically and over $525 million worldwide, “Across the Spider-Verse” is on the doorstep of passing the $563.7 million global total of the 2011 live-action/CGI hybrid “The Smurfs” and becoming Sony Pictures Animation’s highest-grossing movie ever.
“The Flash,” meanwhile, has collapsed from its $55 million opening to $15.3 million, suffering a second-weekend drop worse than that of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which had much more room to fall from its $106 million opening, and the 70% drop...

Silvio Berlusconi, the billionaire media-mogul-turned politician who defined a three-decade-long era in postwar Italy during which TV spin, tainting allegations of corruption and sex scandals were pervasive — but who also achieved unprecedented political stability in the country — has died. He was 86.
Berlusconi died at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan, according to Italian media reports. He had been suffering from leukaemia and had recently developed a lung infection.
After building a fortune by launching Italian private TV with his Mediaset empire, Berlusconi entered politics in 1993, was elected prime minister in 1994, and went on to serve as the country’s premier three times, not consecutively, becoming the longest serving democratically elected Italian leader. He was ousted from parliament in 2013 following a tax fraud conviction.

While it might seem like the Avatar franchise and the Jurassic Park movies don’t have much creative DNA in common, one surprising detail from the 2009 movie was borrowed from the 1993 blockbuster. When director James Cameron’s Avatar arrived in cinemas in 2009, the massive hype around the much-delayed movie led many critics to dismiss the blockbuster. While Avatar’s visuals were praised even by its detractors, Cameron’s maiden voyage to Pandora was accused of robbing its plot from a wide range of sources. Critics of Avatar highlighted the story's similarities to Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas, and even The Smurfs.
However, few viewers compared Avatar to Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1993 adaptation of Jurassic Park. While Avatar’s Pandora was treacherous, the killer creatures of this fictional planet didn’t garner many comparisons to Spielberg’s genetically engineered dinosaurs. Undeniably, both Avatar and Jurassic Park explored themes of amoral scientists messing...

Sony Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is off and swinging at the box office, grossing a massive $17.4 million from 3,500 theaters.
That total is well above the $3.5 million that this sequel’s 2018 Oscar-winning predecessor “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” earned from Thursday previews en route to a mid-December $35 million opening. “Across the Spider-Verse” was projected to earn more than double that with tracking at an $80 million-plus launch, with rival distributors projecting an opening of over $90 million.
With this sky-high preview result, the second-biggest ever for an animated film behind “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million toward a $183 million opening weekend) in 2018, Sony should be looking at a $100 million-plus opening, possibly above $125 million considering the strong reviews, likely-to-be-strong buzz and goodwill from the previous Mile Morales flick.
Yes, it’s an unusually long animated film, running 140 minutes, but extended runtimes aren’t generally an issue for films like “Avengers: Endgame,” “Avatar: The Way of Water...
