Steve Young finally escapes the shadow of Joe Montana!
blanbrn4 May 2007
For years Steve Young had to wait in the wings to be the QB of the 49ers, because the legend Joe Montana was in front of him. Finally in 1992 Steve got his wish the full time starter! But after successful back to back seasons in 92 and 93, both times the 49ers fell short of the Super Bowl with back to back NFC Championship losses despite MVP season's from Young. Well 1994 would be the year that Young and San Francisco were clearly the leagues best. And on Super Sunday in Miami, the 49ers proved they were by far the better team over the outmatched and outclassed Chargers as Super Bowl XXIX turned out to be a runaway. From the start with 1:24 gone, a 44 yard TD pass to Jerry Rice, just showed what kind of long day the Chargers were in for. The rest of the game was really no contest as the 49ers controlled at the half with a 28-10 score. Steve Young was just brilliant throwing a Super Bowl record 6 touchdown passes on the way to a 49-26 blowout of San Diego. Well it was Young's shining moment a time for Steve to cherish, he had finally escaped the shadow of Joe you know who and got the monkey off his back!
