You Can't Polish A Lyrical Poetric Turkey
This is one of those retrospective DVD extras that are specifically made to ties in with a release of a DVD in this case the DOCTOR WHO story The Web Planet which has the prestige of having the most watched show of in the series history . Actually this isn't entirely true because the most watched story in the classic show was the 1979 story City Of Death where 19 million viewers watched in October 1979 but there was a strike on at ITV which meant for several months British television was confined to BBC 1 and BBC 2 . Home video recorders were unknown to myself and my peers in those days so if you were bored then tough . As it stands The Web Planet is often considered the most watched show where nearly 15 million watched
I'll get round to reviewing the story proper in the near future and try and be kind to it however difficult it might . It's a story that tries to be different featuring no humanoid characters which makes it a unique story . The planet of Vortis is populated by catipillars and butterflies that talk , ants and grubs in a story that has the production values of the local school play which has to be seen to be believed and not necessarily in any good way . Amazing to think this was very highly regarded . That is until most fans watched it for the first time on UK Gold and it quickly became one of the most hated stories of the 1960s
It's one of those retrospective features where the production crew and cast reminincse about the production and trying and almost succeeding in being diplomatic . Of course human nature being what is no one wants to slag off a production one's self was involved with hence we get umpteen interviews of " When I saw the script I was struck by the beauty of it especially the Menoptera creatures " cut to a clip with Martin Jarvis dressed as a giant butterfly that looks like amateur fancy dress then cut back to the interviewee saying " I think perhaps it didn't really work on screen " You don't say ?
