gentle lyrical movie in the style of Eric Rohmer
tomgyllenhaal8 April 2006
This film is reminiscent of a style of 1960s European cinema that seems to have faded from fashion. It's almost like something that Bergman or Godard might have made while in a benign mood. Though in fact it's closer to Rohmer with its leisurely exploration of sometimes opaque characters and situations. We seem to have forgotten the charm of such films. How beguiling it is to have some mystery, to leave some questions unanswered, to echo in our minds long after seeing the film. From the first frame a lyrical, gentle, almost melancholic air washes over you. In an age of hollow spectacle and formulaic issue-driven movies it's refreshing to encounter something as seductive as this. Of course nothing much happens. Of course it's as light as a summer breeze. Of course the locations are the stuff of dreams. More importantly the film leaves you with a smile on your face. Which even in as cynical an age as ours is an achievement not to be scoffed at. A movie doesn't need to be visceral and sordid to entertain. I suspect "Capri, You Love?" may be destined to remain a little known, much loved gem. Unless of course, and this is a distinct possibility, it finds an enthusiastic audience in somewhere like Japan where throngs of college students, office workers, take it to their hearts, and allow themselves be embraced and delighted by this sensual depiction of a weekend on Capri.

capri, i quite love.

i had the pleasure seeing the film at a festival - and i quite liked it. i think it captures very much the mood of capri. a place where everyone and everything seems to be ambiguous all the time. on the surface capri seems to be the best spot on earth but if you stay there for a longer period you feel the ennui creeping up your capri sandals... behind the splendor of all the magnificent holiday homes of the rich and beautiful. it is an untypical "german" comedy because it feels more french than the stuff which normally is successful in Germany e.g. "bullyparade" or "otto und die sieben zwerge". ps: one thing i didn't quite like was the voice of one of the actresses - she sounded like minnie mouse (but maybe the sound system at the cinema was out of the shape).

Thoroughly bad movie on the level of one made by a bunch of inexperienced high-school kids

Here're some of the things I find wrong with this movie.

1. lighting and camera work are the worst I've ever seen in any movie

2. editing is poor such that some adjoining scenes are confusingly disconnected; they left me wondering what happened

3. the script is just garbage; I'm either bored with what's going on or I just don't care

4. the acting is horrendous

5. the indoor sets look cheap and ugly

6. the casting is atrocious; a pregnant woman plays one of the leads without the script mentioning why it's relevant

I feel that I wasted an hour and a half of my life watching a piece of trash and am compelled to warn others about it.
