All TV shows tend toward self-parody. So after a number of years on the air, many shows add new elements to alter them slightly. Or not so slightly, as the case may be. And in some cases these changes misfire and shows on the critical list wither and die anyway.
Starting with season five the A-Team, a serio-comedy of a team of fugitives doing good by helping people out of jams (for a price) changed. They were arrested and tried for murder and after a mock execution started working for a mysterious retired General (Robert Vaughn, "The Man From UNCLE") . And Murdock was officially released from the nuthouse.
The new set-up was a cover for their continued adventures, allowing them to do the same thing differently. But the old formula, which was growing stale, had been tampered with. The fourth season had many of the series' best and funniest episodes. And, likewise, a lot of bores. But the attempt to shake things up was less than successful. They are also relocated so Hannibal was no longer playing small bits in suits for monster movies.
It was the last gasp of a fun show. The final season fizzled out with 13 episodes. Just as well.
