Andy Griffith was uncomfortable with the casting of Elinor Donahue because, aside from their age difference (she was 23), he didn't think television audiences would accept her as a love interest after playing Betty Anderson on Father Knows Best (1954). In the end, it was Donahue who felt uncomfortable with the role, feeling there wasn't much to the character for her to build on. She left after the first season which was a shame because she was the loveliest of all Andy's love interests in the entire run of the series.
Because of the limited number of residential houses available on the 40 Acres back lot, the house used for Emma Brand was also used for 'Peggy McMillan,' 'Helen Crump,' and many, many others.
In a very rare move, Elinor Donahue is mentioned in the opening credits. For the rest of the series, the announcer only credits Andy Griffith, Ron Howard and Don Knotts.
This is the first of several times that Don Knotts performs his routine of forgetting passages he claims to know verbatim. On the other hand, throughout the series, he officiously, but precisely, quotes chapter and verse from the rules and regulations of the law.
This is the only episode where the squad car's license plate is DC-269. In all other episodes where the license plate is visible, it's JL-327.
