Adam goes into heat again, results are disastrous

I must admit I don't know what to think about a lot of Adam's love interests. Pernell Roberts is an excellent actor and I've seen the lady that plays his love interest in this episode in other things and she impressed me with what I've seen her in. So I don't really know why a lot of these episodes leave me feeling lukewarm when it concerns trying to see on screen chemistry between the two characters. I even noticed this when it concerned Adam's serious relationship that occurs later on down the line. I didn't see any chemistry. Strangely enough I felt like Adam had the most chemistry with the lady in "Woman of Fire". Yeah, that character definitely needed to tone down some of her actions (breaking other peoples stuff) but Joan and Pernell did have hot chemistry even if the two characters aren't even meant to have lovers chemistry...

At least some of Adam's relationship storylines show a breakdown of why anything beyond this storyline won't work. You can be attracted to somebody sexually but if you don't have the same ideals, it's just not gonna work. Adam's a good guy. He's only gonna resort to violence if he truly has to. But the lady in this episode is a Quaker and traveling with other Quakers. Their beliefs include no violence. Not even for self defense purposes. That truly becomes a problem when you have a target on your back. Some men steal from the Quakers and kill the Quaker leader. It's not Adam's fault but he's a good enough guy that he does feel responsible/guilty for this guy being around at all. He does the right thing and tries to right the wrong he feels he committed. Although I don't think it was Adam's fault either. You can't control other peoples actions.

It's so strange watching these early seasons! So many of the characters are actually wearing different clothes!

I'd also say they're still tweaking with the characters personalities as well. I know I've watched season 1 episodes and it kinda cracks me up to see how the Cartwrights fall into that "Get off my lawn!" attitudes rather than the friendlier characters they end up becoming.

Old Religion, New idea

Is violence bad? That seems to be the question in this episode. When Adam comes upon a wagon train of quakers (or Amish...), he falls for the red-headed girl. But they are made fun of in town, and Adam decides to go away with the girl since he's falling in love with her.

He meets a "friend" along the way. He's down on his luck and has a familiar name, but Adam decides to hire him at the ranch. Then he leaves. Sometimes though, our friends are not who they appear to be. After Adam's friend comes back with his friends, he kills the leader of the Quacker train and Adam seeks revenge on the man. This puts a big stumbling block between him and his new love.

All in all, 5 dead and two wounded.

Atrociously Bad Elizabeth Script Writing
outofseason2 March 2024
I love Bonanza. But this was the worst episode up to this point in the series. I blame it on the script writers. The Quaker sect's use of "thee" and almost total inability to use "thou" and "thine" when appropriate was just maddening.

Those who don't read the King James Bible and are not familiar with Shakespearean-ear literature and other such classic works may not know any better. But those who are familiar... you'll pull your hair out if you listen too closely.

As I tried not to just bust out laughing, my wife spoke up and said, "This is horrible. The writers totally screwed up the dialogue from the religious people." At that point, I said, "MERCY. I was wondering if you were noticiing because it's KILLING me."

We got a good laugh out of it but it took a lot of eye-rolling to get through this episode. Dennis Patrick was great as Sam Brodi. Patricia Donohue is always great (in spite of the bad script).

And you'll get an extra bonus seeing Hank Patterson as the blacksmith. (FYI, he's Fred Ziffel on Green Acres. And, sadly, Arnold doesn't make a cameo with him.) But I could barely give it 5 stars after all was said and done.
