Adah has some history with Ben
bkoganbing19 December 2018
Over Bonanza's long run several real life people met and dealt with the fictional Cartwrights. In this episode the famous 19th century actress Adah Isaacs Menken is making a personal appearance in Virginia City. Ruth Roman plays Menken and the sons find out that somewhere between the three wives he married he and Menken had some history.

One of her other involvements was with prizefighter Don Megowan who is now a shadow of himself, but still a bully and a thug and an abuser. Lorne Greene appoints himself her protector. But what and how much she needs is a debatable proposition.

The climax of the episode is a nasty brawl with Megowan and Dan Blocker two really big guys. In the end though you could hear a Helen Morgan torch song playing in your mind.

Ruth Roman turns in a fine performance though hardly the real Menken.

So much ado!

The boys want to go see a questionable play that they believe their father would not approve of. But in actuality, the actress is an old flame of their father's. The boys are appalled that he would be interested in an actress and told their Pa they didn't like it. Basically, their father told them it was none of their business and he could date who he wanted.

Adam goes in and tries to seduce her to prove that she's immoral, but she sends him away. Then Little Joe thinks he can seduce her. It's here that an old boyfriend steps in and wants to teach the Cartwright's a lesson. Since the old boyfriend is a wrestler, this could be a bad thing...

When Ben kicks him out of the woman's room, he goes after Little Joe, knowing the easiest way to get Ben to fight, and he does.

The man who played Regan has a unique voice. I recognized it from an episode of The Rifleman where he does another outstanding fist fight with Lucas McCain.

The real Adah

This episode involves a real person from Western history. Adah Issac Menken was a famous actress of the time and performed the spectacular "Mazeppa" around the world. It was well known because she played the role of the leading man and was strapped "naked" to a horse. She wore tights, but it was scandalous at the time and drew crowds. She was married three times. John Heenan, the "Benecia Boy", was her second husband and physically abused her. At the time of her performance in Virginia City in 1864, she was married to her third husband. Born in 1835, she would've been younger than Adam and maybe a year older than Hoss. Definitely not the older woman she appears in this episode.

Later seasons are so much better.

Seems like they spend all their time in the first season running trespassers off their land or getting in shootouts. Much better storylines later on.
