Don't mess with her!
mitchrmp10 July 2016
B & B were so good in this episode on so many levels. Brennan is not scared of much. So when a gang member starts getting rough with her, she lands him flat on his back. The whole scene is really quite comical. I assume Booth called Angela and asked her to chew Brennan out for what she did (because he was too proud of her to do it himself, perhaps). Then Brennan told one of her sad stories from her past.

But my favorite part is what Booth does at the end of this episode. I won't give it away, but it's one of his first acts of love for Brennan and I cherish this scene - it does make it in some of the B & B Youtube videos...

The story itself is a bit better than most. Brennan continues to show us that her heart isn't really as hard as she wants everyone to think.

Warning: Spoilers
I agree with the other recent reviewer.. definitely this episode wouldn't have been written that way today.

Booth going berserk with the illegal girl outta nowhere.. he didn't even know her and had no real reason to be that rude to her threatning her to call ice and deport her... Not to mention him going Hank Voight on the gang leader... but the worst part was that he did that during the day... near a random corner and the dude happened to be all alone in an empty street.. nah, completely unrealistic scene right there. For Booth it would've made much more sense him going sniper mode on the guy.. activating the laser sights on the guy and calling him and then saying that if he did something to his partner.. he would just end him from miles away and he wouldn't even see it coming.

Now going to Bones.. I'm rewatching the episodes and couldn't stop face palming every time bones just kicked some guys ass.. it makes no sense her attacking every single bad guy.. she actually puts herself in danger... just to prove that she's badass.. I think the writers should've let it play out a bit.. her getting scared a bit with a drive by or something and then and only then.. booth going sniper mode on him.

My 2 cents.

On rewatch, there's much missing

Warning: Spoilers
Third time through Bones, and I'm struck by how troublesome the conclusions are. Bones's convictions are admirable and well-defended; could the gang leader have seen the funeral and changed his mind about the hit? Why does Booth have to 'save' her?

Why didn't Logan offer to sponsor his dead girlfriend's family? That'd at least be taking responsibility for what happened. At the bare minimum, have the senator and his wife remark, after Hector saying, "You don't want to know", that maybe things need to change in their household and outlook.

I love this show, but it saddens me how a few extra lines of dialogue could have gone so far to push Bones's points about being a decent human being to each other. Perhaps these scenarios are more realistic in the long-run, but television doesn't always have to be so - it is a show, after all.

By the Book

There were a few twists and turns that were interesting here. It was a bankable episode if things worked out so nicely. Just a couple of things. As gratifying as it is to see someone like Booth go nose to nose with a gang kingpin, they are incredibly dangerous and don't take kindly to threats. Secondly, I have trouble with the squints coming up with details about plant decomp, knowing things only grow in one place, without going to a database. Even the kid knowing what his bedpost was made of. Do you know what variety of oak your baseboards are made of when you are no expert? I guess I have to buy into these things if I'm going to watch the show. I do enjoy Brennan's experiences being laid out there, but her survival in those conditions would be tenuous at best.

Hi Bones Booth!

This ep was ok and I did love how Bones was reading a book to help her and Booth work better and even offers to lend it to him later on in the episode lol. One thing that stuck out to me in the beginning when Bones found out that the victim was religious she was very impassioned about giving her a casket and proper burial which wasn't a bad thing but when other people talk about their religion especially Booth she doesn't give it the time of day. I didn't like how Booth was very insensitive and rude to alot of people in this ep. Such as threatening people with taking their baby and calling ice. I don't think this episode would have been written this way today. I also hated the senator and his wife. Some parts of this episode were very hard and cringy to watch but had a few good moments.

Sad commentary on Hollywood
delzog22 July 2021
This story revolves around illegal aliens that are in the country and at least one is killed. What ruined this for me was that it mitigates the fact that they make gang members heroic for being in the country illegally. They even make it seem like a 'drive by' shooting is okay ... since nobody was killed. HOWEVER, the fact remains that these are gangs that shoot people ... legal or illegal! You want me to feel sympathy for someone illegal, then they shouldn't be portrayed as thieves, killers, or members of gangs.
