Bronco rides into town only to discover everyone is keeping their distance from him and a shot up stagecoach in front of the stage office where he works. Inside, he learns from Tom Biggert, stage owner, that the stage was held up by a friend of Bronco, Mike Kirk. Bronco was supposed to be the guard on the run but he says a message from his friend Mike Kirk caused him to ask for a replacement. In addition, the stage was carrying a $8,000 payroll. The sheriff has taken a posse to track down Kirk's gang with no law left in town. Neither Biggert or anyone else in town, including Bronco's girlfriend Orissa Flynn, believe Bronco's story. About noon, Deputy Tub Murphy returns from the posse alone. The town refuses to give Bronco a horse so he is isolated in the cantina with the bartender Pablo Delgado who he soon learns also believes he has the stolen money. Jess Kilgore who was replaced by Bronco at the stage line and as Orissa's boyfriend tries to persuade the mob to take action against Bronco. The situation turns into a stalemate.
