The First targets Spike
katierose2956 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
If "Conversation With Dead People" is the episode where the First makes its self know to the Scoobies, then "Sleeper" is its opening volley in the war against them. In this episode, Buffy tries to figure out how, why and if Spike is killing again. What she finds out about the First's plan will resonate through the rest of the season. This episode directly impacts everything that comes after it and you can't skip it if you're watching the show on DVD.

"Sleeper" revolves around Spike killing again. The episode picks up just after the events of "Conversations with Dead People." Willow comes home to see Dawn sitting in the shambles of the Summers' living room. She tells Dawn that something evil playing with their heads. Meanwhile, Buffy heads to Xander's house to check on Spike. After hearing that Spike might be killing again, she is worried. But, she refuses to believe that Spike could go back to killing humans. She decides to start following him and monitoring his activities. She looses him in the crowd, though. Spike hears a man playing "Early One Morning" on the harmonica and his whole attitude changes. He picks up a woman, bites her and sees a vision of Buffy urging him on. Then he dashes away, disoriented.

Later that night, Buffy confronts him directly. Spike is shocked by her accusations. He argues that he has a soul now and he would never hurt anybody again. But, when Buffy asks him where he's been, Spike admits that he doesn't remember. Buffy points out that after a few months of camping on the Hellmouth, he can't really know what he's doing. Spike panics, denying it, but secretly afraid that she may be right. When he starts to remember bits and pieces of his activities, he decides to investigate himself. He quickly realizes that he's been killing again and calls Buffy. Together they go to a house, where Spike's he thinks he hid the bodies in the basement. There Spike sees a vision of himself. When it starts singing, he looses control and tries to bite Buffy. The bodies he had buried there all start to rise as vampires. Spike pulls himself out of his craziness and stumbles away from Buffy. Buffy kills the other vampires. Spike asks her to kill him, too. But Buffy refuses. She tells Spike that she thinks that something evil is after all of them and that they have to find out what it is so they can fight it. Then she takes him back to the Summers' house. Meanwhile, in England, Bringer's are attacking Giles and his friends. The episode ends with one of the wounded Watchers telling Giles to "gather them" and ax falling towards Giles' head.

There are some really great parts to this episode. "Sleeper" is the first time we hear "Early One Morning" on the show. As Spike strolls past the guy playing it on the harmonica, his whole attitude changes, his stride gets longer and his face becomes more intent. Right there you know that this song is just bad news. And I enjoy Xander putting Anya in charge of babysitting Spike. He doesn't bother to leave Anya with any weapons, which sort of tells me that Buffy's not the only one who suspects that Spike's innocent. Xander might call Spike "Evil Dead" and blame him for hurting Buffy. He might even argue that Spike needs to be investigated and that they can't really know if the chip is still working. But, he clearly still trusts Spike not to hurt Anya. Also, the vampire fight at the Bronze is really cool. "Man, I hate playing vampire towns." And now we know that Billy Idol stole his look from Spike, which is kind of funny.

The scene with Buffy and Spike in the basement is really the highlight of the episode, though. They have such a complex and interesting relationship. When Spike attacks Buffy, she's truly shocked. In fact even after he vamps-out she still tries to reason with him. "Spike, you don't want to do this." She knows that he isn't in control and, in the end, she can't hurt him. And Spike WANTS her to kill him. He's got nothing left inside of him. I think it's the one moment in the entire Buffyverse where Spike stops fighting and tries to give up. But, Buffy won't let him. Spike finally asks for help, after saying that he couldn't back in "Selfless." He really is in trouble and he needs Buffy to pull him out. And she does. At the end of the episode, Spike is wrapped in a blanket, sitting in the Summers' living room. It sort of ties in with blanket he had wrapped around him in season four's "Pangs." Which was the first time, he came to the Scoobies for help. It just works really well.

On the down side, does the First want Spike to kill Buffy, or for Buffy to kill Spike? Either one would play into the season finale, I guess. But really it seems kinna vague. Also, did the First deliberately send that vampire, Webb, to tell Buffy about Spike? Or was just it a coincidence that they met up in "Conversations with Dead People?" If it was part of some plan, doesn't it seem like a really complicated way to turn Buffy and Spike against each other? Also, since when does the Bronze have a bouncer?

My favorite part of the episode: Anya searching Spike's room for serial killer trophies, like scalps or necklaces made of human teeth. When he catches her snooping around and asks her to explain herself, Anya gazes at him for a long moment, trying to think of an excuse. Her final triumphant exclamation, "Sex! I'm here for sex!" and Spike panicked response to her come-ons, just crack me up every time.

The One Where Spike Might Be Killing People Again...
taylorkingston7 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. But it's strange to see Spike feel bad about killing people. Even though he's felt like that since he got his soul back.

In this episode, the Scooby gang fears that Spike might be killing people again. Which would not be a good thing, at all. Buffy follows him and questions him about the girls he was with. Which also makes her sound a little jealous. He can't remember what happened with the girls because he's been having holes in his memory. He insists that not only is the chip working, but that because of his new-found soul, he couldn't hurt anyone. Let alone Buffy. And killing people would hurt her. In the end, they find out that he has been killing, but that he was being triggered by The First. Spike kept seeing himself, Glory and some other deceased and evil characters from throughout the show, and he knows that he's not doing any of this voluntarily.

Overall, I give this episode a 9 out of 10.

The Sunnydale Candidate

Warning: Spoilers
The Good; Love the gag that Billy Idol stole his image from Spike rather than the other way around. Some very effective horror and some nice comedy with Anya and Spike .

The Bad; Nothing bad but this is a bridging episode

Best line; Anya; "If I get bitten I'm going to come back as a vampire and bite your ass!" Xander (smiling) "Wouldn't be the first time"

Women good/men bad; When Spike rejects her Anya fears she's fat? (One of my favourite aspects of Terminator;SCC was Cameron's attempts to fit in as an American high school girl which she largely mastered by remembering the phrases "Bitchwhore much?" and "Does this make me look fat?")

Jeez!; Spike biting pretty coeds

Kinky dinky; Naked Spike under the sheets. Anya suggests some kinky stuff with the stake and says unsouled Spike would have her upside down and halfway to her happy place when souled Spike rejects her. Spike has no problem picking up women who seem a satire on the Spikettes. Xander seems to have a pornographic magazine on his table when Spike walks out. The bouncer is happy to let a girl as hot as Buffy in the club for free. She describes Spike as sallow but in a hot way. See also best line.

Captain Subtext; The vamp at the Bronze suggests she'll take the boy and Spike can take the girl or 'the other way around'.

Dawn in peril; 13

Dawn the bashful virgin; 9

Questions and observations; Xander refers to CSI (another point against Normal Again being true). He also remembers Holden Webster from SDH referring to him as 'Webs' (but then he'd have gone to school with him longer than Buffy did). One assumes the harmonica player Buffy passes is The First as he plays 'early one morning' and The First knows what Buffy is wearing when it appears later. Aimie Mann is great and she plays one of my favourite tunes from the Radio Sunnydale album. Oddly the vamp at the Bronz speaks of her and Spike being 'soul mates'. Vamps in the basement are very Evil Dead. What's the First's plan for them, is it just building an army to try and take over Sunnydale?

Does a soul make you good?
ossie8525 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Buffy is worried that Spike is killing again and has Xander and Anya keep an eye on him. Willow, Dawn and Buffy decide they can't trust anyone anymore, with the 'Beneath You' spirit making itself known. The spirit is controlling Spike without him knowing about it and is making him kill innocents. In England, a girl is killed and a man mortally wounded, Giles arrives there for help.

Why It's So Good - Is Spike evil? Is he being controlled? Does he even deserve to be saved? A soul doesn't make you a good person necessary, and now Spike has a body count even with a soul.

Watch Out For - Don't you hate one bite stands?

Quote - " I used to tell the truth all the time when I was evil." - Anya.

Yikes Spikes!!
skay_baltimore9 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Decisions...decisions. What's our sweet little heroine to do? She must decide whether or not to give Spike the same treatment she gave Anyaka The Vengeance Demon a few episodes back. There...she did not hesitate to run the sword through Anyaka's chest. Here...she decides to take a "kinder, gentler" approach, despite the fact that Spike has clearly started killing/feeding on humans again. (Where's a good "Bloodsuckers Anonymous" 12-Step meeting when you really need one, eh?)

But that Buffy...what a gal!! Heart of gold! The kind of gal who really sticks to her guns!!

Highlights?

Anya delivers. Again. After Spike catches her snooping in his room, and demands an explanation, Anya tells him she's only there for 1 thing. Sex. She then climbs on top of him, but he passes. Somewhat hurt, she replies: "All I'm saying is soulless Spike would have had me upside down and halfway to happy land by now".

Not to be outdone...a female vampire at The Bronze, while fighting Spike, turns to him and asks: "Is that all I was to you...a one bite stand?"

Great song by Aimee Mann - "This Is How It Goes". She also does "Pavlov's Bell", during which there's the above-mentioned fight, after which you can hear Aimee say: "Man, I hate playing vampire towns". Funny stuff!!

Bottom Line: Evil is on the rise -- once again -- in good old Sunnydale. And NOBODY is safe. Ooooooooohhhh.

Snoozer
nightwishouge16 November 2015
Sorry for the snarky review title. I hate to be "that guy". But I guess I am. Nuts.

After watching "Sleeper" on Netflix, it took me a long while to gather up the motivation necessary to proceed to the next episode. Which is atypical of my Buffyverse viewing habits. Usually I'll gobble the next episode down the moment I have the time to do so. Watching Buffy season 7 side-by-side with Angel season 4, there are times when I'm tempted to skip the corresponding episode of Buffy and just shotgun Angel. Heck, it ain't perfect (Cangel? bleck) but it's compelling enough due to everything it does right, in some cases very right.

Sleeper is indicative of the problem I have with season 7 so far. It's lackluster. It's aimless. It feels stretched, like there's not enough story to cover the requisite 22 episodes. The relationship between Buffy and Spike just isn't all that interesting. Spike has been suffering like a martyr for two seasons now out of his love for Buffy and it's just tired at this point. Rather than watch a new (well, new to me) episode recently, I went back to season 4 and rewatched "Something Blue" and "Hush". Their relationship at that time was dynamic and charged. You kept watching because you wanted to see how things progressed. Ever since season 5, though, that growth has stagnated. It's been the same thing over and over again. Different permutations of the same situation. It's tedious.

One thing that is funny about this episode, in a jolting way, is when a character makes reference to CSI. In my mind Buffy and CSI represent such different eras of (and approaches to) television they might as well have been separated by a decade. It's jarring to realize their runs actually overlapped by a few seasons. (Heck, so did The X-Files, for that matter.)

Starting to Get Convoluted
Samuel-Shovel19 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "Sleeper" Spike is accused of siring new vamps around town. Buffy refuses to believe it but the gang sets up a trap anyways to make sure. Everyone goes over their experience with the baddie that tried to trick them. Dawn is uncertain whether it really was her mom or not that she saw. We see Spike turning women, encouraged on by the baddie taking different forms, first Buffy then as an alternate Spike. It tries to force Spike to bite Buffy but he can't do it. Buffy fights off the other vamps. Meanwhile back in England, Giles discovers a member of the Council and his wife murdered in their home. Giles is attacked as the episode closes.

Coming off arguably the best episode of an up and down season so far, I was severely disappointed. This episode is aimless and meandering. I don't know what their end goal is. The character development is messy at best. The "is Spike good or bad" game has been going in for like 3 seasons now and I'm ready for it to end. Anya no longer has a backstory or arc for herself. She just pops into episodes when it's convenient to the screenplay.

Hopefully the latter half of the season becomes more focused because it would be a shame for it to end like this.
