Good Night, Sweet Prinze
kevinolzak23 July 2016
"Ed Talks to God" earned the ignominious distinction of being the final episode for Freddie Prinze, who tragically took his own life mere hours after shooting was concluded. A surprise birthday party for Ed finds more cancellations than guests, but the timely arrival of B.J. Foster (Edward Andrews), former private first class in Ed's battalion during the war, is a definite surprise, if only because he read two years before that his buddy 'Blinky' Foster has died: "I read that too but I didn't believe it!" He's taking an aluminum leg for 'a little test hobble,' out in Los Angeles to visit his in-laws: "they haven't met my leg yet!" Ed's habit of speaking to the sky puzzles Blinky, who admits that he's cheerful, not happy: "there's a difference!" Chico convinces Blinky to impersonate God, in order to talk back to Ed: "even Rich Little doesn't imitate God!" Virtually our final look at Freddie Prinze sees him wearing a face full of cake, and not looking amused.

A Truly Chilling Detail Of Freddie Prinze's Final Hours
project717-629-11938328 January 2024
There is not much more that can be added to the now well-documented fact that this was the last episode of "Chico And The Man" that Freddie Prinze filmed mere hours before he took his own life...other than to point out a truly chilling detail that seems to have elicited little notice or comment. In the last few minutes of the episode, Prinze asks Jack Albertson to take a large knife that he was previously using to cut his own birthday cake and hand it over, so he can stab himself to death in a "comic" gesture of apology, guilt, and self-recrimination for setting up a false imitation of "God's voice" to convince Ed that his life still has value and meaning as he grows old.

Great Television

I just want to say thank you first for being able to enjoy this wonderful show. It teaches a lot of lessons in a lot of different ways. How wonderful we were blessed to have had a chance to get to see us, Freddie Prince act. What a wonderful human being. Such a sad ending in his life I can't get enough of the series of Chico and the man I love watching it whenever I get a chance. It definitely gives me great laughter, but also sorrow at the same time, knowing that this wonderful man is no longer with us. You can see every scene he put himself into the character. He was so talented with all of his different characters that he played, and could portray I mean just absolutely amazing actor and his son is just a blessing as well and what a wonderful actor he is, and I'm sure he is blessed that he gets to see his father whenever he Would like on television . Yes.
