Having Theo become an inner-city youth counselor convinced NBC that this storyline would be the basis for a spinoff for the Theo character after "The Cosby Show" ended its run. After "Cosby's" end in 1992, NBC intended to do that. Malcolm Jamal Warner liked the idea but insisted that he play a completely different character from Theo Huxtable in that series. This leads to Warner starring in the fall of 1992 in the series "Here and Now." Unfortunately, many viewers were disappointed that Warner was not continuing Theo in this new series, and thus ratings were lackluster. "Here and Now" would be canceled after only thirteen episodes in 1993.
