- When Pam reveals that she is pregnant, the Ewings try in vain to mend fences with Digger Barnes at the family barbecue.
- Jock (Jim Davis) is organizing the yearly barbecue at SouthFork, the ranch of the Ewings. Robert "Bobby" Ewing (Patrick Duffy) thinks it will be a great opportunity for him to bury the hatchet with his arch-enemy, Willard "Digger" Barnes (David Wayne); after all, Willard is Pamela Barnes Ewing (Victoria Principal)'s father. Willard is not happy about the situation either, as he resents Jock for having stolen his fortune. Cliff Barnes, (Ken Kercheval), Pam's brother, wonders why their father is going to the barbecue at all. Willard just wants to make his daughter happy. Cousin Jimmy Barnes (James Canning) will pick them up.
Sue Ellen Ewing (Linda Gray) is organizing the barbecue. She asks Pam to move over her car to let the grocery's van out. Lucy (Charlene Tilton) is interested in knowing young sweet nineteen cousing Jimmy. Pam agrees but she just enters the manor house. Pam phones his doctor and she learns that she is pregnant from Bobby. She is overjoyed about it. Bobby is having a shower while she starts looking at her body and touching her belly.
Ray Krebbs (Steve Kanaly), the ranchhand who used to shag Lucy all the time, takes Maureen (Jo McDonnell) to the barbecue. Jimmy is one of the first to congratulate Pam on her pregnancy.
One of the new party-goers is J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman)'s new secretary, cute brunette Susan (Lisa Lemole). Lucy makes her worried with a sarcastic reply when Susan admits that it was J.R. who hired her. That leaves Susan wondering.
Miss Ellie Ewing (Barbara Bel Geddes) is the first to spot Willard Barnes arriving to the party. She at least tries to be civil to him. Sam (Haskel Craver) and Tilly (Irma P. Hall) are there to serve the drinks. Sam tells Bobby that he should tell the good news to Jock and Miss Ellie soon, as everybody is talking to it. Ray and Maureen dance in front of Lucy, who is a bit jealous and makes small conversation with them by telling them about Bobby and Pam's news.
Tilly and Sam bet on who's gonna be first to start a fight when they learn the news. They also mention an old love affaire Miss Ellie and Willard had when they were young and single. Willard is getting drunk by the minute. Miss Ellie is telling Willard that all the family loves the ranch, and that she has not got a single regret because Jock and her love each other so much.
Lucy tells Sue Ellen the good news. She goes to tell Pam how excited she is. Sue Ellen drinks two square cups of wine, and she tells J.R. Sue Ellen knows that Jock is crazy about having a grandson. She blames her childless state on J.R.'s disinterest in making love to her. Lucy tries to start a conversation with Jimmy, only interested in eating. Jimmy looks really dumb.
Sue Ellen drinks and drinks. She talks to a table of elderly ladies about her conjugal problems. She daydreams about her past, when she was Miss Texas. As a present for the baby, Pam and Miss Ellie force Jock and Digger to shake hands; albeit coldly, this is done. ---But five minutes afterwards, Digger is accusing Jock of stealing the oil company and now of stealing his daughter and grandson. Digger gets drunk, although Pam tries to take him home.
Digger makes a spectacle out of himself. Jock mocks him. Digger sings and dances to a popular Texan tune. Bobby also argues with Jock. J.R. is also tipsy, and he sits down to drink some more with Digger. Pam finds Jimmy and Lucy frolicking, as she usually does with all the boys. Pam tells Jimmy to take her father home.
Sue Ellen rides a horse drunk. J.R. insults her some more, also drunk. Bobby punches J.R. when he insults Ray Krebbs and the fact that he was an ex-boyfriend of Pam. Sue Ellen prevents Bobby to go on beating on drunk weak J.R., and she asks him to take her far away from there. Back to the barbecue, J.R. notices Pam still on the haystack. He goes up and talks to her. Pam wants to leave. Pam falls to the floor and loses the baby.
Afterwards, Jock, Miss Ellie and Bobby are distraught. J.R. is still drunk and says that he never meant to hurt Pam. Bobby asks why he went to the stable. Jock has to remind Bobby that J.R. is his brother. Bobby wants to leave South Fork as soon as Pam can walk. Jock says that it'll be a mistake, and that he wants to keep his family together.
Finally, it's Pam who wants to stay living in the ranch.
Sue Ellen asks J.R about the event. He is as cold as a fish with her.
