- Bobby Ewing: [Pamela phones Southfork from The Store] Hello?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Bobby! When did you get back?
- Bobby Ewing: Oh, hi, honey. This morning. I went straight to the office.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, why didn't you call me? We could have lunch together.
- Bobby Ewing: I'm sorry. It's just that meeting with J.R. and Daddy was a real butt-breaker. And then I had that lunch with Jim Lassiter, and I was exhausted, so I came home.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: You know you've been gone for a week. You only managed to call me twice from La Mesa, and now this? Well, thanks a lot, Bobby!
- [puts down receiver, leaving Bobby hanging... then there's a knock on her door]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Come in.
- [it's Alex]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Hi.
- [sad]
- Alex Ward: Hi. Either you've just been fired or you lost your favorite puppy.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [forlornly] Well, I'm losing something.
- Alex Ward: Why don't we meet, like, tomorrow, and talk about it? If it helps, you can think of me as the man from the Humane Society.
- [smiles]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [smiles] That's a wonderful idea.
- J.R. Ewing: [enters his office] Well, Afton...
- Afton Cooper: Hi.
- J.R. Ewing: ...what a pleasant surprise. Don't get up, sit down, sit down. I thought you and your mother would be long gone to Biloxi by now.
- Afton Cooper: Well, you remember, you included that expensive little side trip to the Bahamas for Mama and me?
- J.R. Ewing: Yeah, of course I did. Just a little token of my appreciation for the enthusiastic way you became a part of the family.
- Afton Cooper: Mm. I love to hear you talk.
- J.R. Ewing: Like I said, talking's the second best thing I do.
- Afton Cooper: [shakes her head] Mm-hmm. Third. Your imagination is second. I never knew a man who could think of so many ways...
- J.R. Ewing: [they're in the Ewing building after all, so he interjects] What brings you to Dallas?
- Afton Cooper: I hope you're not angry. I cashed in those airline tickets. Me and Mama moved into Mitch's old apartment.
- J.R. Ewing: Oh, I see. You're, you're living in Dallas.
- Afton Cooper: Mm. That's why I'm here. I was hoping, uh, you maybe knew someone who could help me get started in my career.
- J.R. Ewing: Career?
- Afton Cooper: I'm a singer.
- [nods]
- J.R. Ewing: A singer? As a matter of fact, I do know some people in your business.
- [buzzes secretary]
- J.R. Ewing: Louella?
- Louella: [on intercom] Yes, sir?
- J.R. Ewing: Hold all my calls for me, will you?
- [walks towards Afton:]
- J.R. Ewing: Yes. Maybe we ought to discuss your career.
- Afton Cooper: Would you like me to audition?
- J.R. Ewing: [smiles] Maybe.
- [kisses her]
- J.R. Ewing: But real quiet.
- [they kiss, her arms go around him...]
- Bobby Ewing: [evening at Southfork, family gathering in the lounge] Pam, I'm sorry.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [coldly] I'm sure you are.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [Bobby's getting dressed] You're up early.
- Bobby Ewing: Sorry, honey, I didn't mean to wake you. But I have to catch Lassiter before he gets that plane to Oklahoma City.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, I want to talk. You were on the phone half the night last night.
- Bobby Ewing: Honey, can't it wait, please?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Bobby, what are we doing with our lives? We don't ever discuss the future.
- Bobby Ewing: [turns around] I don't understand what you're talking about.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I feel like Ive been on hold the last few months while you've been running Ewing Oil.
- Bobby Ewing: Well, I resigned the presidency. Isn't that what you wanted? Honey, I can't just sit and do nothing.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: That's not what I meant. Before J.R. was shot, we left Southfork. We decided to start a new life together, just the two of us.
- Bobby Ewing: Honey, I know that I said I wanted to leave, but I was wrong. I feel like I'm just starting to find myself.
- [laughter in his voice:]
- Bobby Ewing: And life is exciting.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, all right, I can understand that. But, Bobby, include me in your new life. We used to share things, talk over our problems. Lately all you're doing is running.
- Bobby Ewing: Look, I'm involved in something that's very exciting and new. And as soon as it gets off the ground, I won't have to spend so much time on it.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: But that's the point. I don't even know what your new venture is.
- Bobby Ewing: It's solar energy. Now I've gotta go see Lassiter. Bye-bye.
- [out the door]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [breaks down] Lassiter? Well, who the hell is Lassiter?
- Milton: [pretty Afton plays the piano] She looks like she's good in the sack.
- J.R. Ewing: Milton, Afton is my niece's sister-in-law.
- Milton: Oh, I didn't mean nothing by that, Mr. Ewing. I just meant she's a real looker.
- J.R. Ewing: Let's listen to her sing.
- Milton: Sure, and Mr. Ewing, if she don't sing too well, don't you worry. She can always wait tables. The money's good and the work ain't too hard.
- J.R. Ewing: [laughs] Okay. Afton, sing something for us, won't you, honey?
- Afton Cooper: [got the job as singer, on merit, really] J.R., I can't thank you enough.
- J.R. Ewing: You already have.
- Afton Cooper: Uh, I'll be free mostly during the day, so maybe we can have lunch together, or something...
- J.R. Ewing: Afton, you're a performer now. You're gonna need your rest. I'll be dropping in from time to time to see how you're making out.
- [goes off, leaving Afton looking uncertain]
- Sue Ellen Ewing: You look like you need that drink, Pam.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Sue Ellen.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Remember I'm an expert in that field. I know the difference between enjoying a drink and... needing a drink.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Do you?
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Your secret is safe with me, Pam.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Sue Ellen, I see Alex quite often. His magazine does a great deal of business with The Store. It was a business lunch.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Yeah. Lord knows that I'm not the one to give advice. But we are both married to Ewing men. And I think It'd be easier for you to realize that Ewing women must make their own lives.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, I've made a life of my own. I work.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: I'm not talking about work. I'm talking about total lives. The Ewing men are into power first... and affection second.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I will never accept the fact that Bobby and J.R. are the same.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: How can you say that?
- [Pamela smirks contemptuously]
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Pamela, how can you say that? What was your life like when he was running Ewing Oil? And where was he all last week?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Putting out oil-well fires.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Pamela, there is a man named Red Adair who puts out oil-well fires. When J.R. was sick... you saw for yourself how close we were. And now that he is running mighty Ewing Oil, I'm an adornment for his arm. Someone to show off in public. So if he seeks affection... and sex somewhere else, why shouldn't I? And why shouldn't you?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [fixes herself another drink] Because It's not that way.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Pam... I just want you to protect yourself. The Ewing men are all the same. Bobby and J.R. are into the same power trip. And for you to survive, you have two choices. You can either get out... or you can play by their rules.
- Bobby Ewing: [approaching] Sue Ellen?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Bobby?
- Bobby Ewing: Hi, honey. You making me a drink?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Of course I will.
- [she hugs him, smirking at Sue Ellen over his shoulder]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Oh, there's nothing to talk about. I discussed it with Sue Ellen last night, and she's not gonna say anything.
- Alex Ward: No, what I wanna talk about has nothing to do with Sue Ellen. It has to do with you. Secretive lunches, furtive hand-holding, that's... that's not my style.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, it's not been mine either. I've never been a sneak, and I don't wanna start being one now.
- Alex Ward: What do you want, Pamela?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I'm sorry, Alex, I have a meeting.
- Alex Ward: Pam, I've got to know. Do you want me?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Yes. But I'm not ready to give Bobby up. And I can't cheat on him.
