The callsign for the aircraft was SAM 26000, with SAM indicating Special Air Mission; the aircraft carries the callsign Air Force One only when the president is aboard. The Boeing VC-137C went into service during the administration of President John F. Kennedy in 1962 and was replaced in presidential service in 1972 but was kept as a backup. The aircraft was officially retired in 1998 and is now on display at the Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton, Ohio.
