Commander Stoner (Jack Albertson) is upset with his age on his 45th birthday. With a physical coming up, Ensign O'Toole (Dean Jones) puts Stoner at ease by giving him a physical of his own with a good report. However, Stoner picks up the Encyclopedia Medica and reads about the "fatal forties", leading him to imagine serious symptoms. He now can't sleep and is a nervous wreck on the eve of his physical. Once in San Fransisco, O'Toole has an Navy Ordinance officer (Gary Crosby, son of Bing) who owes him a favor to pretend to be a doctor and give him the physical, to try and put him at ease again for the real one the next morning.
