When Beans writes his essay, then changes the font, he chooses "Weird Symbols" from a pull-down menu that contains mostly non-existent font names (Telekinetix, Thesus, Uncool, &c.). When he selects it he gets 'text' that vaguely resembles Webdings. When Ren finds his folder, however, the printout is clearly not the same as what is seen when Beans does the conversion on his computer screen. The paper-printed version that Ren sees appears to be Wingdings (and when 'translated' into a standard font, such as 'Courier', is nonsense; the first line of the paper-printed version of Beans's essay, for example, translates to: "Ab^^hijv_>?>$4%%^^(1@").
The episode's title references Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Also, when Louis sees the weird font Beans used to print out his essay, he says, "Man, that is so E.T.". Later, when Louis is trying to get Beans away from a dangerous situation, Beans is in the basket of Louis's bike, covered with a blanket, and they hit a ramp that shoots them into the air, a direct 'quote' from the similar scene in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).
