After seeing Lisa beat up a guy causing trouble in the bowling alley, Will asks if she's a Power Ranger. Nia Long originally auditioned for the show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993). Also coincidentally, a pilot episode for the show had the five would-be Rangers beating up a gang of punks who make trouble in a bowling alley.
After feeling emasculated when Lisa beats up a bully at the bowling alley, Will seeks karate instruction from Mr. Yoshi, played by Pat Morita. Pat Morita is best known for his roles in The Karate Kid I, II, III and The Next Karate Kid. Will Smith's son, Jaden Smith, plays the title role in 2010's The New Karate Kid (featuring Jackie Chan, as Mr. Morita passed away in 2005).
While waiting for Mr. Yoshi (Pat Morita), Will does the same Crane stance that Ralph Macchio used to beat his opponent in The Karate Kid (1984). Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) is the one who Daniel (Ralph Macchio) learned the Crane technique from in the film. Furthermore, Will Smiths son Jaden would later star in The Karate Kid (2010).
