Sophia's Choice (#4.22)

Warning: Spoilers
Blanche got a bonus check and wants to use it to enlarge her breasts. Sophia finds out that her friend from the home she lived in was transferred into one that is much worse. She goes there and breaks her out to escape. But her friend is hard to take care for. They try to find another home for her but everything is too expensive.

Once again Golden Girls do a great job combining a serious matter with humor. I did laugh a lot about Blanche's breasts and how she was choosing them, hilarious. But then they also made us think about the issues elderly faced. I loved how they made it that even after Sophia's friend got into a good home they said they are still not happy because there are so many who are still out there without proper care and one day it could be any of us.

An excellent, moving episode.

Sophia decides to break her friend Lillian out of her new nursing home, an establishment with an even worse reputation than Shady Pines. Blanche gets a bonus at work, and decides to invest in some plastic surgery.

Certainly very funny, definitely topical, was this around the time, 1989 where brest enlargements became quite the done thing to do?

Lots of breast jokes throughout, but of course there's the serious side, and bit does it have a few sobering moments, dementia has been used as a topic once before, and it's used once again here, maybe not as powerful an episode, but definitely another one that hits home.

That scene where the phone was ringing, talk about stressful, how true to life was that.

8/10.

How to break a senior citizen out of the home the Sicilian way.

Warning: Spoilers
Meet Sophia P-Hawkins, the Robin Hood of the Retirement Home, aiding friend Ellen Albertini Dow, a fragile old lady stuck in what is allegedly the worst nursing home in Miami, even worse than Shady Pines. But Lillian needs more help than Sophia and the girls can give, and Sophia needs to face the fact that some elderly can't live unassisted. Albertini Dow, the rapping granny from "The Wedding Singer" and disco Dotty from "54", is adorable yet extremely vulnerable, but gets some very funny lines, particularly towards Blanche who is planning on having her breasts enlarged.

This is one of the few times where Sophia gets the main story with Blanche in support. Her vanity in deciding to get plastic surgery is tested by bigger human problems which Dorothy and Sophia deal with when they visit friend Lillian's home. It's apparent that the issues causing patient discomfort isn't just about a lack of caring: it's about stringent budgets and a lack of government funding. But this does show that the girls do care about the big issues and will stand up and be heard when any type of justice needs to be served.
